Generator fire kills Lagos ex-councillor

Tragedy struck in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos last Friday when a former Supervisory Councillor in the Kosofe Local Government Area, Olu Ogunbanjo, died from a generator fire which razed his music shop. 51-year-old Ogunbanjo, who served in the LGA between 2003 and 2007, died at the General Hospital, Gbagada, from the burns sustained during the incident.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, recently decried the N1 billion costs incurred by the police on the settlement of court judgments in rights violation cases within the last three years.  He expressed his strong exception to this avoidable waste of money at a recent workshop on the use of force and firearms, organised by the police in conjunction with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). A man, Damilola Ibitokun, has committed suicide, as his body was found on a tree in a bush at Ero town in the Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State. His family members described the incident as a mystery, saying nobody could explain why the man hung himself. The deceased’s wife, Muibat Ibitokun, said her husband was gentle, adding that he had no reason to take his life.

Woman stabs robber to death in Lagos, Sustains injury

A middle-aged woman is currently recuperating in a Lagos hospital, after robbers stormed her rented apartment on the Lagos Island, during which she stabbed one of the assailants to death. The woman, identified simply as Adenike, and her family were attacked on Tuesday at about 2am on Eyin Iga Street. Our correspondent gathered that the robbers, who were armed with knives and cutlasses, reportedly gained entrance into the house after damaging the gates.

Microsoft unit fires 85% of Nigerian workers

Microsoft on Thursday sacked 34 (85 per cent) of the 40 employees in the Nigerian office of its phone division. The sacking came 24 hours after the company’s latest Windows 10 was made available in Nigeria and 189 other countries. Although, Windows 10 is now available as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8.1 operating systems or with new personal computers and tablets, industry experts said it would leave about 15 million Nigerian payments cards prone to hacking.
