NCC suspends data price hike

The Nigerian Communications Commission has suspended its directive to mobile network operators to increase the price of data. According to the NCC, the decision is as a result of the outrage that followed the announcement of the planned price hike.

The family of Alhaji Atiku Olugbon of Ote, in the Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, and the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olusola Amore, to investigate the shooting of their son, Bukola Olugbon, by a policeman, Abubakar Ahmed. A relative of the victim, Mr. Ibrahim Olugbon, said, “The police must investigate and punish the culprit to serve as a deterrent to others.”

Reps want fuel sold at N70 per litre

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Petroleum Products Prices Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to review the current price template for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with a view to reducing the price to N70. This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Abubaker Fulata titled “Urgent Need to Review the Petroleum Price Template”.  Moving the motion, Fulata expressed dismay over the circulating rumour of a possible hike in the price of petrol in the country. Although the rumour was denied by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Fulata said it was coming at a time when the nation is going through difficult times.

A woman, Aderonke Ojediran, on Monday, approached a Grade C Customary Court, Agodi-Ibadan in Oyo State, to seek for dissolution of her five-year-old marriage with Oyeleke Ojediran, for allegedly comparing her with goats. Ojediran also complained that she was seeking for divorce because Oyeleke had refused to pay her bride pride and had been threatening her life. Another reason for the divorce, the plaintiff said, was the lack of care for the only child of the union. She told the court that “ I packed out of my husband’s residence in 2013 when I could no longer cope with the bad characters of my husband.”

The Ekiti State governor-elect Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) on Sunday delivered his acceptance speech in his Owo home after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him the winner of the Saturday’s governorship election in the state. The All Progressives Congress candidate, Akeredolu, polled a total number of 244, 842 votes to beat runners up, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) of the Peoples Democratic Party, who had 146,784. The Alliance for Democracy candidate, Chief Olusola Oke came third with 107,124 votes.

Dons, economists slam Buhari over $29.9bn loan

A cross-section of economists, including university dons from across the country have expressed their displeasure with President Muhammadu Buhari’s proposal to borrow $29.9bn to get Nigeria out of recession, saying it would mortgage the future of coming generations. Some of the economists also noted that it was risky for the country to take such a loan as there was no national plan for it. Buhari had sent a request to the Senate for the approval of external borrowing to the tune of $29.9bn, but the lawmakers voted against the loan request due to technical issues.

Consumers lament as least cost of bread now N120

Bread consumers in Hadejia, Jigawa, have expressed concern over persistent hike in prices, amid increasing demand for the commodity. The prices of bread had gone up by about 50 per cent in the area. A medium loaf of bread is sold at N270 as against N200 before, while a small loaf costs N120, as against N70. A cross section of the residents described the trend as worrisome. Alhaji Muntari Isa said that the high cost of bread was a source of concern to most families. Isa said that he spend about N600 on bread daily, noting that the commodity was beyond the reach of ordinary man.

Ondo election: APC chieftain killed in Owo

Mr Afolabi Olaposi, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owo, Ondo State, was killed by unknown gunmen on Thursday night in Owo. The Party said in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Abayomi Adesanya, on Friday in Akure that Olaposi was shot dead on his way home after attending a meeting of the party in preparation for the governorship election.

A pastor of the Celestial Church of Christ, Johnson Dominic, has been hospitalised after he was allegedly tortured by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dr Emmanuel Eze, in Onosa community in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State. It was gathered that Pastor Dominic, who is the head of the CCC, New Jerusalem Parish, Onosa Avenue, was allegedly brutalised around 5pm on Tuesday by the ACP and his aides, who came to the area in a jeep.

Authorise probe of Obasanjo’s $16bn power spending – SERAP tells CJN

Transparency group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accoun3, has sent a letter to the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, requesting him to urgently “to appoint an independent counsel to investigate allegations of corruption in the spending of $16 billion on electricity by the government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007.” SERAP said the request was brought “pursuant to Section 52 of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000, and the letter and spirit of the Act, and the object and purpose of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).”

N4.7bn fraud: EFCC calls for arrest warrant against Ladoja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday urged Justice Mohammed Idris of a Federal High Court in Lagos to issue a warrant for the arrest of a former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, along with his former aide, Chief Waheed Akanbi, for allegedly laundering N4.7bn. A counsel for the anti-graft agency, Mr. Oluwafemi Olabisi, made the application on Friday following the absence of Ladoja in court for his proposed re-arraignment.

Money laundering: EFCC jails Kano Senior lawyer for 4 years

The Federal High Court Kano presided over by Justice Fatu Riman, Wednesday, convicted and sentenced a senior lawyer, Yakubu Mohammed Na-Allah, to four years imprisonment without option of fine for offences of money laundering to the tune of N50 million. The convict was arraigned by the EFCC on 14 January, 2013 on a two-count charge of money laundering. Upon arraignment, Na-Allah pleaded not guilty and subsequently trial commenced on 26 June, 2013 in which the prosecution called seven witnesses and tendered 15 exhibits.

Trailer accident causes another gridlock on Lagos / Ibadan Expressway

Scores of commuters were subjected to trekking long distances on Wednesday morning following a multiple accident involving about five articulated vehicles on the Kara Bridge of the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. A speeding trailer loaded with petrol, witnesses said, caused the accident when it rammed into others, exploded and caught fire which extended to the others.

Residents find dead man inside rice sack

Residents of the Oyingbo area of Lagos State have found a man, who was strangled, put in a rice sack and dumped beside a canal. The victim, whose name had yet to be ascertained, was found at the Jebba bus stop. It was gathered that the sack was initially thought to contain rubbish, until a policeman, attached to a commercial bank in the area, checked it and found the corpse.

Kudirat’s murder: Family warns Al-Mustapha

The family of the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, wife of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late MKO Abiola, has warned the former Chief Security Officer to late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd), to desist from uttering statements designed to derail the course of justice with respect to the assassination of their mother. The family, in a letter to Al-Mustapha, yesterday, signed by Mrs. Hafsat Abiola-Costello, also drew Al-Mustapha’s attention to Sergeant Roger’s “confession before the Oputa Panel,” that he (Al-Mustapha) gave him the gun to carry out the assassination.
