NASS slams Presidency over failure to sign budget

The National Assembly, NASS, declared, yesterday, that the Presidency would be ungrateful for the good job it did on the 2016 Appropriation Bill passed into law, last week, if President Muhammadu Buhari actually said he would not sign the document unless it was accompanied by the details. NASS regretted that the Presidency failed to appreciate the herculean task it faced to pass the budget, despite the errors contained in the different versions of the document submitted to the legislature and the litany of  disapproval  by some ministers.

Lagos chief assaults pregnant bread seller

The police in Lagos have arrested a chief in the Ijegun area, identified only as Ajiroba, for allegedly assaulting a bread seller, Bukola Olasunkanmi, in the Isheri-Oshun area of the state. Olasunkanmi, who was seven-month-old pregnant, was allegedly flogged several times by the chief and his thugs because she mediated in an argument involving some levy collectors and another bread seller at the Ijegun bus stop.

A 29-year-old teacher, Chidi Uzoma was on Thursday arraigned in a Kado Grade 1 Area Court Abuja, on a two-count charge of criminal intimidation and defamation of character.  The Prosecutor, Judith Obatomi told the court that Mrs Tina Peter of Kado Village, the same address with the defendant, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja on March 12. “The complainant reported that while she was getting her child ready for school, the defendant allegedly called her a witch. 

Barber, 37, rapes 7-yr-old girl

  Police in Lagos have arrested a 37-year-old barber who allegedly raped a seven-year-old primary school pupil in Papa Ajao area of Mushin, Lagos, Tuesday. The victim said she was given a packet of biscuit before the suspect, identified as Adelopo Yusuf, defiled her, saying on arrival from school Tuesday, she met their apartment locked with the whereabouts of her older siblings unknown.

A   housewife, Mrs. Oghosa Ejemai, who allegedly lost her seven-week pregnancy and sustained injuries, following alleged attack by officials of the Edo State Government, yesterday threatened to sue the State Government for the sum of N100 million for assault. She alleged that the State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Isimeme Iriogbe supervised her alleged assaults along with his staff.

One dies in land grab protest in Ikorodu, Lagos

A commercial motorcyclist (aka   Okada   rider) was killed when a protest over the forceful takeover of a farmland in Isiu near Ikorodu, Lagos, turned bloody last Friday. The   Okada   man was reportedly shot dead by some gun-wielding people described as “land grabbers” who stormed the Ikorodu garage venue of the protest. His body has been deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue. The whereabouts of another protester, Kabiru Ayanniyi, is said to be unknown.

Protest as naval officers kill three in Arepo, Ogun state

There was tension in Arepo, in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State on Wednesday after some naval officers allegedly killed three residents. The victims, identified as Biodun Mohammed,   Chicago and   Body , were said to have been rounded up on Sunday at a beer parlour in the area. The men were said to have been taken away and shot dead.

The detained  leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, has urged the British Government  to intervene in his case by asking President Muhammadu Buhari to release him from prison.  Kanu who is facing treason charge alongside  two other pro-Biafra agitators, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, approached the British government through his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor. Kanu, in a letter dated March 24 and addressed to the British High Commissioner in Abuja, described himself as a victim of travesty of justice and gross human rights violation.

An Ilesa-based human rights activist, Kanmi Ajibola, has warned Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state against going ahead with the plan to disengage 678 workers of the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital. The legal practitioner, while speaking at a press conference in Osogbo, said the governor could not take any action on the issue because a case had been instituted against him before an Osogbo High Court. A police Sergeant, Jude Nwadudu, has been found dead in a hotel at Iju, a Lagos suburb. Nwadudu was said to have gone there with a female friend at Easter. It was gathered that Nwadudu slipped in the restroom and hit his head on the floor. The woman raised alarm when he became unconscious.

I won’t resign – Minister of State for Petroleum, Kachikwu

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, said on Tuesday in Abuja that he would not resign as he still had a lot of work to do.  The minister said this as part of his closing remarks while briefing the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Upstream) on the lingering scarcity of petroleum products across the country. Following the current fuel scarcity, and Mr. Kachikwu’s comment that he could not do magic to end the crisis, some groups including the South South APC, NANS and some Civil Society Organisations have called for the minister’s resignation.

Sanitation: Six landlords jailed in Ondo

A Mobile court sitting in Ondo town, presided over by Magistrate Odenusi Fadeyi has sentenced six landlords to six months imprisonment each with hard labour.  Prosecutors Elizabeth Akinfemisoye and Adejoke Olarewaju, said the landlords were arraigned in the court over four-count charge. This ranged from their inability to provide latrine accommodation in their various places of domicile, since the existing one is filled up and liable to cause epidemic in the area.

“My wife has turned my boxers to rags as she always tears them to rape me,” a retired soldier, Gafaru Rodoye, told an Igando Customary court in Lagos. He told the court on Tuesday that his wife, Idiat, with whom he had five children in their 20-year old marriage, always raped him.  “My wife always rape me; she had turned all my boxers to rags to achieve her selfish aim,” he said. The petitioner said that his wife was in the habit of threatening his life through beating and that he was afraid she might kill him one day.

Fuel crisis pains go on as Senate invites Kachikwu

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ibe Kachikwu is to visit the Senate over the biting fuel scarcity  that is threatening businesses and making life difficult for Nigerians.  Dr. Kachikwu, who is also the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC),  is to appear before the Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) today to state the steps being taken to stop the scarcity. Committee Chairman Jibrin Barau told reporters after an on-the-spot assessment of filling stations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that the invitation became necessary following the hardship Nigerians go through as a result of the scarcity.

Hoodlum killed while extorting money from driver

A 25-year-old man, identified simply as Idowu, has been killed by a truck driver, Fatai Olawunmi, on the Apogbon Road, Lagos Island.  Idowu was among a group of hoodlums who besieged the truck with number plate, KZR 117 ZT, demanding money from the driver. The deceased was said to have climbed the back of the trailer without the knowledge of the driver, who in a bid to escape the harassment, jumped into the vehicle and sped off.

You must account for recovered loot, court tells Buhari

The   Federal High Court in Lagos has insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration must account  for recovered stolen funds since the   return of democracy in 1999. The recovered funds, the court said, must be published in the country’s mass media. Details of the court’s judgment were contained in the certified true copy (CTC) sent by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Nigerian man arrested in India for using postal services to smuggle drugs

A certain Nigerian man, Frank William, has been arrested by India’s Narcotics Control Bureau, NCB, in a joint operation with the Anti-Narcotics Cell, ANC in South Mumbai for his involvement in smuggling and peddling of cocaine in the city, The Times of India City reports. William reportedly belongs to an international drug racket, using postal services to smuggle drugs and contraband. The cocaine found in is possession when he was arrested at the weekend, weighed 600gm and was worth between Rs 4 crore and Rs 4.8 crore( $640,000-$719,500) and concealed in the axle of a vehicle that was sent via post from Latin America.

Woman found dead in deep well in Lagos

A 41-year-old woman, Antinlola Adeyemi, declared missing for about four days by family members, has been found dead in a deep well on Monday in Lagos.   The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Fadipe Rasaq, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria. Rasaq said that the family had been looking for her for about four days before she was discovered on Monday.

Former presidential candidate of the Nigeria Advance Party, NAP, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite has died at the age of 82. The elder statesman is reported to have given up the ghost on Monday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos after a brief illness.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, on Monday, the President noted that Tinubu’s rise politically since he was elected as a Senator in 1992 was a testimony to his forthrightness, diligence and doggedness.

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, was literally divided, yesterday, over whether or not Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, should retain his prime position in the APC-led Federal Government on account of the worsening fuel scarcity and his comments that he is not a magician. While the National Vice Chairman of the APC, South South wants Kachikwu to resign immediately, the South-East chapter of the party thinks otherwise.

Presidency: why recovered cash can’t be made public yet

The cash recovered from former public officers under probe by anti-graft agencies will not be made public yet because it will be used as evidence against them in court, the Presidency said yesterday. Presidential spokesman Mallam Garba Shehu said much as President Muhammadu Buhari would have liked to let Nigerians know how much has been recovered, it will be impossible for now.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has asked politicians to leave it alone to concentrate on its work and avoid dragging it into mudslinging attempts for whatever gain. Asked to react to the allegation of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, that the First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, was involved in round tripping of foreign exchange, the bank’s spokesman, Mr. Isaac Okoroafor, told our correspondent that the allegation was, “not only ridiculous but laughable.” 

Foreign airlines to sack 2,000 Nigerian workers

The National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE, has revealed that foreign airlines plan to sack about two thousand (2,000) Nigerian workers due to what they claimed is their inability to transfer their earnings to their respective home countries to meet operational costs in accordance with international rules because of new Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, policy on forex and fund transfer. In a letter addressed to the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika and made available to newsmen, Acting General Secretary of NUATE, Comrade Olayinka Abioye said the plan  has destabilize  the affected workers, adding that the Federal Government should wade in and prevent the huge job loss.
