Guard arrested for fingering, sucking employer’s daughter’s breasts in Lagos

A 24-year-old security guard who sexually molested his employer’s daughter has been arrested and detained by the Lagos State Police Command. The guard, Ossai Sylvester, assaulted the 10-year-old unnamed girl in the Victoria Island area of the state on Saturday. Sylvester had also inserted his finger into the private parts of the victim and was sucking her breast before his employer caught him and reported to the police.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 60-year-old man and two others alleged to have repeatedly gang-raped a 13-year-old primary six pupil until she became pregnant, in Majidun area of Lagos. There is, however, a twist to the rape saga as the victim’s mother has raised the alarm over threat to her life by the suspects: Baba Ijebu, 60, Kingsley and Henry, for reporting the matter to the police. 

Osogbo health officials abandon corpse by roadside

Residents of Aderin Junction, Powerline area of Osogbo, have expressed concerns over the likelihood of epidemic outbreak following the abandonment of a decomposing body by the roadside. Our correspondent, who visited the area on Wednesday, observed that the corpse had started decomposing and passersby covered their noses due to the stench oozing from it. Prophet arrested for raping 13-yr-old boy at vigil

The Police in Anambra State have arrested Ekene Aboji, 35, a prophet with Jesus Miracle Ministry, Ifite-Awka, for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old boy after a vigil.  This is just as 37-year-old Olamide Korede, who allegedly raped a lady (names withheld) at a guest house in Ketu, Alapere, was yesterday charged before an Ogudu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos. Anambra State’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nkeiru Nwode, said in Awka, yesterday, that the alleged defilement of the boy by the prophet occurred on August19 at the Church premises.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has confirmed that Nigeria is in its worst economic recession in 29 years. According to the NBS gross domestic product (GDP) report for the second quarter of 2016, Nigeria’s economy contracted by 2.06 percent to record its lowest growth rate in three decades. In the first quarter of 2016, the NBS said the economy shrank by 0.36 percent to hit its lowest point in 25 years.

A teenager, Segun Adeyefa, 18, has been arrested by officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly selling bars of soap as mobile phones to people in traffic. The suspect, who confessed to the crime, was arrested at 7:30PM on Tuesday by the officers on routine patrol of Ikorodu Motor Park, while trying to defraud a man.

Floods ravage states across Nigeria, kill 28

At least 28 people have been killed as floods wreaked havoc across many states in Nigeria in the last few days. Hundreds of houses were swept away in the floods that followed days of heavy rainfall. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, (NiMet) in its updated weather report is predicting that floods will persist up to October in at least 10 states.

Nigeria officially in recession, GDP growth drops to -2.06%

The National Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday released the much-awaited Gross Domestic Product figures for the second quarter of 2016 with the GDP growth rate sliding further from -0.36 per cent in the first quarter to -2.06 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth rate recorded in the second quarter of this year is a confirmation of the predictions by the Federal Government and economists that the country was heading into recession.

Robbers spend six hours in victim’s house

The Anti-Robbery Squad of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, has arrested a four-man gang that had allegedly been terrorising residents of the Ikorodu area of Lagos State. The suspects – Akin Ayotunde, Isaac Ogbonna, Sola Dede and Sodiq Lawal – specialised in lurking around houses at night and switching off their victims’ generators before attacking them.

Cement price jumps by 40%

Prices of various brands of cement skyrocketed overnight across the country putting builders and suppliers under unexpected pressure. Brands of cement initially sold at between N1, 500 and N1, 600 have jumped to between N2, 200 and N2, 400 in most parts of the country. Dealers of cement in Kano State yesterday attributed the increase to unexpected suspension of production by the major cement companies.

Police arraign 76-year-old after son arrested for fraud flees

A 76-year-old man, Ademola Adeniran, has been arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for an alleged fraud committed by his son, Lukman Adeniran. The septuagenarian was arraigned on Tuesday on two counts bordering on perversion of justice. Lukman was arrested by operatives from the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja for converting a sum of N3m given to him by a firm to his personal use.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike to press home its demands for the implementation of its 2009 agreement with the Federal Government. The ASUU Lagos Zone Coordinator, Prof. Olusoji Sowande, said this at a news conference on Tuesday in Lagos. Court jails teenager 1 month for buying stolen diesel

A Grade 1 Area Court, Karmo, Life Camp, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced an 18-year-old boy, Musa Abdullahi, to one month imprisonment for buying stolen diesel.  The Area Court judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, who sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty, however, gave him an option to pay N5,000 as fine. Abubakar warned the convict to desist from committing crimes, adding that the sentenced would serve as deterrent to others.

After 27 years of nuptial bliss, a man, Atoyebi Lawal, on Tuesday pleaded with an Agege Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his marriage, alleging that his wife beats him. “She destroyed three of my cars due to her constant violent behaviours and has beaten me on different occasions causing me grievous bodily harm,’’ he said, urging the court to dissolve the union.  Lawal, a resident of Desalu Street, Ebute Meta, Lagos, alleged that his wife, Seyi, was destructive, troublesome and that she had been threatening his life. 

French Economy Minister Steps Down to Run for President

French Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron resigned Tuesday, clearing the way for him to challenge his mentor, President François Hollande, in the 2017 presidential elections.  Mr. Macron tendered his resignation during a meeting with Mr. Hollande in the Élysée Palace, the president’s office said, allowing the 38-year-old to “dedicate himself entirely to his political movement.” Finance Minister Michel Sapin will take control of the Economy Ministry in addition to his current duties, Mr. Hollande’s office said.  The move sets the stage for Mr. Macron to enter a crowded field of presidential contenders, complicating Mr. Hollande’s own bid for re-election.

No prepaid meter, no payment of electricity bills, consumers threaten EKEDC

Electricity consumers in Ijeshatedo in SuruLere Local Government Area, Lagos State, have threatened not to pay their monthly electricity bills to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) until it installed prepaid meters in their houses. They told newsmen in Lagos in separate interviews that they were tired of paying estimated bills, while the neighbouring communities enjoyed minimal charges on their prepaid meters. Mr Eniola Taiwo, a resident of Ogunlana Street, told pressmen that electricity consumers in the area were usually served outrageous bills ranging from N10, 000 to N35,000 monthly.

A 24-year-old woman, Angela Job, who allegedly bit off her friend’s eyelid during a fight, has appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. Standing trial on assault occasioning grievous harm charge, the accused entered a `not guilty’ plea.  According to the prosecutor, Insp. Ben Ekundayo, the accused had on Aug. 19 at about 6.30 p.m. at Papa Bus Stop, Badore Road in Ajah on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, bit off the eyelid of the complainant, Uche Anyanwu.

A 36-year-old husband, Abraham Dominic, on Tuesday told a Mararaba Upper Area Court in Nasarawa State that his wife always threaten to poison his children anytime he corrects her mistakes. Dominic, a businessman of Gwagwa Mararaba, had urged the court to dissolve his eight-year-old marriage to his wife, Onyedikachi, for alleged lack of understanding and peace.
