Nigeria earned N2.838 trillion from the export of petroleum products in the first quarter of 2015, according to data released, yesterday, by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS. The amount is 64.18 per cent of the Federal Government’s 2015 budget of N4.425 trillion. The NBS, in its Foreign Trade Statistics for the first quarter of 2015, stated that the export of petroleum products accounted for 87.86 per cent of Nigeria’s total merchandise export of N3.23 trillion in the first quarter.

Residents of Omojoda Community in the Adamo, Ikorodu area of Lagos have organised a search party to apprehend a middle-aged man, identified as Segun, aka Mago , who allegedly raped three girls before fleeing the area. The police at the Sagamu Road Division and the Area N Command, Ijede, where the residents reported the matter, have also launched a manhunt for the suspected rapist. Our correspondent gathered that the suspect, after allegedly raping his victims, cleaned the mess with a white handkerchief before bringing the girls back home.

Disagreement over age difference has led to the death of a mechanic, Moruf Sanni, in the Yaba area of Lagos State. Moruf and a resident, identified simply as   Somebody , had first fought on Sunday night. Jacob, a 20-year-old footballer from Afikpo North, Ebonyi State, was said to have accosted the victim and stabbed him several times in the neck and head until he gave up the ghost. The incident happened on Ajoke Street in Ago village, Iwaya,Yaba.

The Benue State incoming Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, has described his experience as a motor park tout and his election as governor as a divine arrangement and the handiwork of God. Ortom, who bared his mind to   our correspondent   in an exclusive chat in Makurdi, said his elevation from grass to grace was due to hard work and his firm believes in God. Swiss police today raided the five-star Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich, Switzerland, making at least seven arrests, including FIFA vice president Jeffrey Webb and senior figures Eugenio Figueredo, Jose Maria Marin and Eduardo Li.  They were led away by police through the side exit of the hotel, with many using bedsheets to shield themselves from the public eye. 

The Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions has filed criminal charges against a British citizen, Deepak Khilnani, for fraud. Sources said the state might soon file a request for his extradition to face criminal charges in Nigeria. Khilnani, an Indian-Briton chartered accountant, was said to have, along with one Dr. Sushil Chandra, duped his Nigerian partner, Green Fuels Limited, to the tune of $8.8m in 2008. The DPP, last week Thursday, filed a charge marked ID/1544c/15 before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja against the suspects.

The police in Lagos have arrested five suspected members of a robbery gang which unleashed terror on residents of Ijanikin area on Sunday, May 24. One of the robbery suspects, 25-year-old Ajayi Solomon, said   that he went into armed robbery because his parents were late and he needed to take care of his siblings. Apart from Solomon, the other suspects arrested are Momodu Williams, 19, Kazeem Ganiyu, 19, Seun Ariyo, 20, and Elijah Dada,19.

A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps scheme in Kwara State, Miss Yetunde Idowu, has been found dead. Her skull was said to have been broken while there were bruises on her body. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday arraigned two workers in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation for N1bn scam. The accused ─ Mohammed Audu, aka Abdullahi Mohammed, and Yahaya Ayodeji ─ were arraigned before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory Jabi, Abuja, on 10 counts bordering on criminal conspiracy and complicity in award of contact. The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren said, “The duo abused their offices by floating companies through which they cornered contracts emanating from the Work Bank’s Economic Reform and Governance Project, domiciled in the office of the Accountant General of the Federation.” Mohammed Audu, aka Abdullahi Mohammed, and Yahaya Ayodeji

T he Lagos State governor-elect, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has released his official portrait and has requested that he should be addressed simply as Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the Governor of Lagos State.

One Ajayi Olatunbosun has been arrested by the police for allegedly hiring thugs to pour acid on his ex-wife, Bamidele Otakiti, in her shop on Adejobi Street in the Ajasa Command area of Lagos. It was gathered that all had been well between the couple since they moved to Lagos in 2005 until a few months ago when a disagreement soured their relationship. The quarrel was said to have led to their separation in February, 2015.

A group, Advocacy for Societal Rights Advancement and Development Initiative,   has instituted a fresh suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, from swearing the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday. The suit filed on Tuesday is also seeking an order nullifying the certificate of return issued to Buhari by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The plaintiff hinged the suit on the allegation that Buhari did not qualify to contest the presidential election on the grounds that he gave false information about his academic qualification to INEC.
