Lagos rejects panel’s casualty figure, says one killed in Lekki

The Lagos State Government has rejected the resolution of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters that no fewer than nine persons lost their lives when armed soldiers stormed the Lekki toll gate to disperse #EndSARS protesters on October 20, 2020. This claim, which was contained in a 41-page White Paper released by the state government on Tuesday night, countered the findings by the Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel that nine persons were killed by gunshots at the toll gate. The JPI had recommended that a monument memorialising the lives lost and those injured should be erected at the Lekki toll. NCDC confirms two cases of Omicron variant in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday morning confirmed the first case of the Omicron variant in the country. This was contained in a press release issued by the centre and signed by the Director-General, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa. The Omicron variant, a new strain of the coronavirus disease, was reported by South Africa and first detected in Botswana. Following the discovery, countries such as the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Israel among others placed travel bans on southern African countries. However, the NCDC on Wednesday morning said two cases of the variant were discovered through genomic sequencing. It albeit linked the cases to two passengers from South Africa.

An unidentified Nigerian man has disrupted banking activities as he attempting to hang himself inside the bank hall, after a branch of the United Bank of Africa (UBA) released his money to hackers who hacked his account. Narrating the incident, it was reported that Someone hacked the young man’s account and stole over N450,000. The young man went to the bank branch located at Iju Lagos to complain. The bank traced the hacker and froze the hacker’s account. He was subsequently asked to get a prove from the court stating he did not authorize the bank transaction to the hackers account. Things turned bizarre when the young man returned to the bank with the court order only to be informed the bank has released the funds to the hacker by un-blocking the account. Men wearing police uniform attack bank in Osun

Some men allegedly wearing police uniforms early hours on Tuesday stormed Ikirun micro-finance bank and burgled its Automated Teller Machine. It was gathered that the gun-wielding men arrived at the bank around few minutes past 2am and easily accessed the security post because of the uniform on them. According to sources in the town, the criminals tied the night guards in the bank and proceeded to the ATM which was forcefully burgled. It was learnt that one of the night guards managed to escape from the scene and ran to town to inform police of the incident. Uganda hands over control of country’s only international airport to China

Uganda stands to lose ownership of its only international airport, the Entebbe Airport, to China, following the mishandling of a multimillion dollar loan facility. The East Africa nation while acquiring the loan facility signed away the control of the airport’s bank accounts to the Chinese Exim Bank, the lender. The chairman of the committee, Senator Sahabi Alhaji Yaú, disclosed this to newsmen after defending the 2022 budget of the agencies under his panel’s supervision before the Appropriation Committee. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved April 2022 as official date for the commencement of the operations of much-awaited Nigeria Air. The Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, disclosed this when he along with Ministers of Transportation, and Finance, Budget and National Planning, Rotimi Amaechi and Dr Zainab Ahmed, respectively, briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the FEC meeting. Some Secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State, have reportedly stoned the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Obantoko Division, Alimeke Ignatius, in the head, during a clash in the metropolis. A 33-year-old man, Azubuike Omenehu, who allegedly stole N120,000 from his girlfriend’s piggy bank, on Wednesday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. Omenehu, of No 45, Makanjuola St., Orile Iganmu, Lagos, is being tried for stealing and escaping from lawful custody. The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Nov. 3, at the same address. He said that the girlfriend and complainant, Mercy Nwaoga, insisted that the defendant was the only person who knew where her wooden safe was. Ekhueorohan submitted that Omenehu was detained at the police station where he escaped, but was later re-arrested. Iran has executed a man who was arrested for murder when he was aged just 17 in an apparent violation of international law. Arman Abdolali, now 25, was a child when he was detained before he was then subjected to a 'grossly unfair trial marred by torture-tainted "confessions", according to Amnesty International. Abdolali was first sentenced to death in December 2015 after the disappearance of his girlfriend Ghazaleh Shakur a year earlier. Her body was never found and the court found he had murdered her without leaving any trace after achieving 'mental maturity' and understood the nature of the crime.

Chico Ejiro's widow, Joy, has been thrown into a state of mourning again just about eleven months after losing her husband. Joy has lost her 7-year-old son, Viano, to cancer in the United States where they reside. Viano died in the evening of Monday November 15th, and since then condolence messages have been pouring in for the bereaved family from concerned members of the public. Before his demise, Viano had been battling with cancer since he was diagnosed with the ailment when he was a toddler, and his late father had devoted a lot of resources to his treatment. His mother had moved to the United States to get proper treatment for him while he was still a toddler. Barely one week after a woman allegedly killed her husband who caught her with another man in Edo State, another woman from the same family has killed her own spouse. The woman simply identified as Maimuna allegedly killed her husband known as Mallam Nasiru Dagana. It was gathered that the incident happened at the weekend in Jattu, Uzairue, Etsako West Local government of Edo. The Osun State Police Command on Tuesday said body of the late post graduate student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Timothy Adegoke, was not mutilated before it was buried in a shallow grave. The Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, Yemisi Opalola debunked the rumour that some parts of the body of the deceased were removed by those who allegedly killed him. Media and Publicity Secretary of the secessionist group, Emma Powerful, disclosed this on Tuesday in a statement made available to our correspondent in Awka, the Anambra State capital. EFCC arrests Fani-Kayode for forgery

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Lagos. Fani-Kayode was said to be under investigation for alleged forgery and manipulation of documents. Our correspondent learnt that the ex-minister, who rejoined the All Progressives Congress in September, was brought to the Lagos Zonal Office of the anti-graft agency on Tuesday. The details of the allegations against him were sketchy but the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed Fani-Kayode’s arrest by operatives. “I think something like that happened,” he said and declined to comment further. Retirees that left the service in Osun State on Contributory Pension Scheme on Tuesday lamented hardship they have been exposed to due to non-payment of their retirement benefits. The senior citizens, who had stormed Osun State Government Secretariat in protest, said people were no longer willing to lend them money to feed over their inability to pay back the previous borrowing. The protesters, who were mostly primary school teachers, locked the main entrance to the secretariat and refused all entreaties to open the gate, insisting on meeting the governor, Adegboyega Oyetola. Stating their grievances, the leader of the protesters, Michael Adebayo, said hunger made them to embark on the protest, adding that no one was sponsoring them.
