We must improve tax revenue without increasing taxes - Buhari to FIRS

President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration is committed to improving tax revenue in the country. The president spoke on Tuesday at the second National Tax Dialogue Week in Abuja. Femi Adesina, presidential spokesperson, quoted Buhari as expressing concern about the current tax system, which he said is characterised by fragmented administration, multiple and sometimes, overlapping taxes. “In most tax-efficient nations, tax administrative processes and practices are harmonised within a single system,” he said.

Train Attack: TUC Chairman, Secretary General Among Those Killed

Members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) were among those killed in Monday’s attack on a Kaduna bound train. Secretary-General of the union, Barr. Musa-Lawal Ozigi, and TUC Chairman in Kwara, Comrade Akinsola Akinwunmi, were killed during the attack. Reacting to the incident, some members of the union expressed over the development. “We lost our Sec. Gen. (Secretary-General) and the Kwara State Chairman,” a source in the TUC confided in Daily Trust on telephone. Terrorists bombed a section of the Kaduna-Abuja rail track, forcing the train, which departed Abuja at 6pm on Monday to derail. After that, they opened fire on passengers, abducting some and killing others.

FCCPC freezes over 30 accounts of illegal loan companies

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission says it has frozen no fewer than 30 bank accounts operated by illegal loan organisations. The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Mr Babatunde Irukera, made this disclosure at a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday. Irukera also said that the commission had engaged Google and Apple Stores to take down some loan applications from their stores, noting that there were certain processes required for that to happen. He said that the commission was currently engaging three major loan companies whose businesses had been affected by its raid.

The Managing Director of the Bank of the Agriculture, Alwan Ali Hassan, is reportedly missing after terrorists attack the Abuja-Kaduna train. The bank boss was among the passengers on the train going to Kaduna. “We cannot tell if he has been kidnapped or not but we are worried because we have been unable to reach him since yesterday. “His phone lines have been switched off and no one has contacted the bank or any of his family members,” a source close to his family told The Nation on Tuesday. It was gathered that around 970 passengers were on board the Kaduna train when the terrorists attacked, blew up the tracks, killed and injured several travellers.

Barely 24-hours, after suspected terrorists attacked a Kaduna-bound train, a few kilometres to the Kaduna metropolis, bandits, have attacked Gidan train Station along the Abuja-Kaduna rail track. Recall that on Monday night the train was attacked at about 7.45pm, leading to the death of no fewer than seven persons. Many also sustain injuries and some were kidnapped during the attack. However, Channels reports that the terrorists may have planted IEDs on the tracks forcing the train heading to Abuja from Kaduna to a stop. A Nigerian man, Kenneth Ajilore, has been sentenced to six and half years for rape by the Nightingale court based at Hendon Magistrate Court. Ajilore, who is of Prince George Road, Stoke Newington, was accused of raping a woman inside a car. According to Hackney Gazette, detectives began an investigation after a woman, aged in her 20s, reported being raped in a car after a night out in Stoke Newington. The attack took place in the early hours of September 17, 2021. The woman told officers that Ajilore invited her into a vehicle and drove her to different locations across the city. The accuser took photos of the vehicle which detectives used to trace it back to Ajilore. They discovered he had hired it on the morning of September 16. To further prove Ajilore was responsible for the attack, officers talked to several witnesses and examined mobile phone data. A China Eastern passenger jet carrying 133 people has crashed in southwest China and caused a mountain fire with casualties unknown, state broadcaster CCTV reported Monday. The Boeing 737 plane crashed in the rural countryside near Wuzhou city, Guangxi region, and “caused a mountain fire”, CCTV said, citing the provincial emergency management bureau. The report added that rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. CCTV said a “China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 plane carrying 133 people has crashed in Teng county, Wuzhou, Guangxi, and caused a mountain fire.” Local media reported that China Eastern flight MU5735 had not arrived at its scheduled destination in Guangzhou after it took off from the city of Kunming shortly after 1:00 pm (0500 GMT) Monday, citing airport staff. A Member representing Oluyole Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Tolulope Akande-Sadipe has proposed that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) should increase the validity of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to three years. 85-year-old man found dead in Ogun river, two arrested

An 85-year-old man, Jimoh Oladiran, has been reportedly found dead in Asipa village in the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. It was learnt that Oladiran’s body was found near a river on March 13, after his children began a search for him when he did not return from a trip he embarked on with one Alfa Mufa. His eldest son, Sulaiman, said he was shocked when he saw his father’s corpse covered with a rusty roofing sheet.
