Why we increased registration fee from N13,950 to N18,500 —WAEC

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) says the increase in its registration fee from N13,950 to N18,000 was due to the rising inflation in the country. The Council, however, pledged to continue to improve on its service delivery, assuring that the just concluded 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be released within 45 days after the conduct of the last paper as is the practice of the Council. The examination body made the disclosures when the Chairman of Council, Professor Ato Essuman, led his team on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu on Thursday in Abuja.

FG Permits Nigeria Air To Lease Aircraft To Begin Operations

The Federal Executive Council has given approval to Nigeria Air to lease aircraft to start operations. The Minister of Aviation, Mr Hadi Sirika made the announcement while briefing State House correspondents after the council meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday. The Minister, who didn’t disclose when the national carrier would starts its operations, said the company would begin with three aircrafts. He added that Nigeria Air is open to investment from any of the country’s airline companies.

Human rights group seeks former Sri Lankan president’s arrest in Singapore

A human rights group has filed a criminal complaint with Singapore’s attorney general to seek the arrest of Sri Lanka’s former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa for alleged war crimes. Mr Rajapaksa, who fled to Singapore this month after he was ousted from office over Sri Lanka's economic collapse, was defence minister during the country’s civil war, which ended in 2009. The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP), an evidence-gathering organisation administered by a South Africa-based non-profit foundation, said on Sunday that its lawyers had filed the complaint requesting his immediate arrest. The complaint alleges Mr Rajapaksa committed grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions during the civil war “and that these are crimes subject to domestic prosecution in Singapore under universal jurisdiction”. The Kano State High Court on Thursday sentenced the Proprietor of Nobel Kids Academy and North West Preparatory School, Abdulmalik Tanko, the principal suspect who masterminded the kidnap and killing of 5-year-old school girl, Hanifa Abubakar, to death. The Presiding Judge, Justice Usman Na’abba, sentenced him to death by hanging while delivering his judgment on Thursday. Hanifa was abducted on December 4, 2021, on her way home from Islamiyya school and subsequently discovered to have been killed by the convict, who is her teacher and school proprietor, after demanding N6m ransom, at Dakata, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

20-year-old wife stabs husband to death in Adamawa for coming home late

The Adamawa State Police Command has apprehended a 20-year-old housewife for stabbing her 38-year-old husband to death. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, who said the state Commissioner of Police, CP Sikiru Akande, had directed clinical investigations into the incident for proper prosecution, explained that the suspect had engaged her husband in a brawl, for keeping late at night which eventually led to his death. He explained that the suspect, Caroline Barka, a resident of Angwan Tamiya, in Madagali Local Government Area of the state, got into a physical brawl with her husband, following his return from one of his late night outings drunk. The wife was said to have picked offence with the husband for falling on their one-year-old baby. In the ensuing brawl, the suspect had allegedly taken a kitchen knife, which she used to stab the husband, resulting in his death. He said he was aware of the several challenges facing the state but that he would tackle them head-on. Gunmen kill Adamawa PDP lawmaker, shoot son

A gang of armed men in the early hours of Saturday, killed the Deputy Leader of Song Local Government Legislative Council, Adamawa State, Hon. Ishaya Bakano. The death of late Hon. Ishaya, who represents Gudu Mboi Ward, is believed to have been the target of assassination, as the gunmen who broke into his residence at Bannga in the wee hours of Saturday, left the venue shortly after they shot and killed him. A family source said the gunmen also shot the son of the deceased, and that he is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

UK doctor charged for conniving with Ekweremadu over ‘kidney harvest’

A London based medical doctor has joined Senator Ike Ekweremadu and wife, Beatrice, in the dock in the United Kingdom (UK) over alleged plot to harvest the kidney of a homeless Nigerian. Obinna Obeta, 50, of Hillbeck Close, Southwark, southeast London, appeared at Bexley Magistrates’ Court on 13 July, accused of conniving with the Ekweremadus to arrange for the travel of Ukpo Nwamini David (21) from Nigeria to the UK. Obeta is also alleged to have conspired with the former Deputy Senate President to arrange or facilitate the travel of David with a view to exploiting him via organ harvesting. The charges come under the Modern Slavery Act, according to The Mail of London. Prosecutors claim the Ekweremadus planned to have David’s kidney removed so it could be given to their daughter.

Anambra Government has concluded arrangements to count and register all the herbalists and spiritualists in the State to stop charms for kidnappings and other crimes in the society. The decision by the government was taken during the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Chukwuma Soludo. Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu, who disclosed this in a statement Wednesday in Awka, after the meeting, said the government wanted to use such method to eliminate criminally minded elements.

According to Chief Press Secretary to Lagos State Governor, Gboyega Akosile, she died on Sunday. 66 years old Nelson was Commissioner for Women Affairs in 1999 - 2003 and a close ally of the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Osun: APC’ll respond to results after consultation – Oyetola

Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, has said the leadership of the All Progressives Congress in the state will respond to the result of Saturday’s governorship poll after studying it. This was contained in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ismail Omipidan, obtained in Osogbo on Sunday. Adeleke was returned elected after defeating his closest challenger, Oyetola, and 13 other candidates, scoring a total of 403,371. Oyetola got 375,027 votes and won in 13 local government areas of the state to come second in the election. But the governor, who was the APC candidate in the poll, called on his supporters to remain calm, and the people of the state to go about their businesses without let or hindrance.

Growing up in the streets of Ibadan, Oyo State, Ibrahim Sarafa didn’t have big dreams like his mates. Raised by a single mother with many other siblings after his father died, Sarafa could only manage to attend a local primary school which he never completed. His chances of completing primary education and proceeding to secondary school were further dashed when his mother who later remarried into a polygamous home, died, leaving him and his siblings under the care of their stepfather. At 14, Sarafa broke ranks with his second family, took to the streets and began to fend for himself. A huge refuse dump in the Sabo area of Ibadan soon became his permanent residence as he joined other homeless children and scavengers to ransack the dumpsite for useful scraps to sell. A 56-year-old man, Inisanmi Ayeniberu, has prayed an Igando customary court, Lagos, to dissolve his six-year-old marriage with his wife, Chinwe, on the ground that she gives birth almost every year. The man told the court, “I thought we would be happy in the presence of each other, not to have the house filled with babies.” He also said Chinwe was quarrelsome, disrespectful and intolerant. Chinwe, a trader, denied the allegation, claiming that her husband got married to her dubiously. She said, “He never told me I won’t give birth for him. FG approves N400bn for poverty reduction schemes

The Federal Government has approved the sum of N400 billion under the National Poverty Reduction and Growth Strategy. This covers certain welfare schemes which include the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, Conditional Cash Transfer, Farmer Money, and Market Money. The approval for 2022 was made known by the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule. Governor Sule had spoken with State House correspondents on Thursday after a meeting of the National Steering Committee of the NPRGS at Aso Rock in Abuja, to review the implementation of what was approved in the budget. The President Muhammadu Buhari had in 2021, set up the NPRGS headed by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The Field Commander, Osun State Amotekun Corps, Amitolu Shittu, on Friday, urged operatives of the corps to comport themselves in a peaceful manner during the governorship election on Saturday. In a statement on Friday, Shittu asked the operatives to go along to their polling units with their “tested and confirmed African Science materials”. “You must conduct yourself in a peaceful manner devoid of any controversy as the law has no respect for violators”. “You are to perform your civic right in mufti. Fuel hits N250/liter in Abuja, other states, queues spread

Some filling stations in Lagos, Abuja, Niger and other states dispensed Premium Motor Spirit at between N200/litre to N250/litre on Sunday, higher than the government-approved retail price of N165/litre, as queues for the product extended to more states. It was gathered that the worsening queues for petrol in Lagos and neighbouring states, as well as its prolonged persistence in Abuja and environs, were due to the insufficient supply of products by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company.

Lagos flood killed three siblings, four adults –NEMA

National Emergency Management Agency has said that the flooding that occurred in Lagos State last weekend claimed seven lives. Zonal Coordinator, South West, NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, made the disclosure in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday. “The post-emergency phase assessment after the unprecedented rainfall of Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9, 2022, has revealed that about seven people – three children of the same parent and four adults died. The siblings, Michael, 18; Elizabeth, 17 and Timi, 14, were swept away while trying to relocate from their room to the main church structure. The youngest child, Timi, who was said to be asthmatic, while trying to climb the plank linking their room to the church building, slipped and was overpowered by the flood.
