Stakeholders knock ministry over N1.4bn refreshment budget

Some stakeholders have faulted the sports ministry for budgeting a staggering N1,480,971,399bn in the 2023 appropriation budget to cater for refreshments, meals, settlement of honorarium, sitting allowances, publicity, welfare packages, and other miscellaneous. Our correspondent learnt that the amount is part of the N193,418,082,888bn allocated to the sports ministry from the N21.83trn bill passed by the National Assembly and signed by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.). The breakdown of the amount showed that N26,156,222m was allocated to refreshments and meals, while N140,668,563m would be spent on welfare packages. According to the documents sourced from the Budget Office of the Federation, the allocation for the ministry, excluding the four agencies under its control, stood at N8,906,051,356bn. The ministry also earmarked N20.579m for honorarium and sitting allowances, N2.3m for postage and courier services, N4.704m for medical, N10.209m for subscription to profes

Man dies after touching third rail at River North CTA train tracks, police say

A 31-year-old man died after touching the third rail of a Chicago Transit Authority train track in River North late Friday night, police said. The man had fallen onto Brown Line tracks before touching the dangerous, electrified third rail at 10:22 p.m. at 350 N. Wells St., the address of the Merchandise Mart CTA station, authorities said. DPO slumps, dies inside his office in Lagos

Lagos State Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of Seme Police Division, CSP Salami Mojeed, reportedly slumped and died in his office on Tuesday. The deceased is said to have complained of headache and visited the hospital on the same day. But was still feeling unwell after his return. It was reported the DPO instructed his orderly to inform the Divisional Crime Officer, DCO, to come to his office, as he wanted to leave but not without handing over official proceedings to the DCO. The orderly, however, returned to meet him on the floor, gasping for breath. He was later confirmed dead by Badagry General Hospital where he was rushed to. Confirming the incident in a tweet on Friday, the Lagos State Police spokesman SP Benjamin Hundeyin, announced the DPO’s passage. He said, ”We regret to announce the death (while in service) of SP Salami Mojeed, DPO of Seme Division, which occurred on Tuesday, 10 of January 2023, following a brief illness. He has since been buried in his home town of Ede, Osu

The Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Benjamin Hundeyin has said it is surprising how many Nigerians are willing and ready to join the Police. Hundeyin also revealed that many people have called and sent messages, asking when the Nigeria Police form would be out. The statement was contained in a post via his verified Twitter handle. He said he had thought everyone hated the Nigeria Police. He wrote, “Shey una dey whine me ni? “Everyday, I receive calls and messages asking, ‘When will the Nigeria Police form be out? I’m interested in joining the police.’ And here I was thinking everyone hated @PoliceNG Shout out to all our supporters'.

Police rescue American woman tricked by 23-year-old 'Yahoo Boy' from US to Nigeria

A United States citizen, Vonapolouis Moss, has explained to the Kwara State Police Command how she was tricked into (travelling to) Nigeria by Awoleye Oluwatofunmi (Oluwa o to fun eleyi, dollar-yahoo tofunmi ni)  a 23-year-old suspected Internet fraudster known as “yahoo boy”. Moss of 2962, W 64th Court, Merrillville, Indiana 46410, USA said she was lured into the country on January 9, 2023, by the suspect, said to be an internet (Internet) fraudster who (had) ripped her off thousands of dollars since her arrival. “We met on social media and he invited me to visit Nigeria but when I came, he took me to the bureau de change to change money to Nigeria currency and he also took me to ShopRite.  "When the money on me finished, he told me to tell my people to send more money,” she told the police during interrogation. The foreigner said that she liked Nigeria but said that she would like to return to the US.

Nigerian Lady jailed in UK for stealing £19,650 from vulnerable patients

A 41-year-old Nigerian woman, Abiola Akinremi, who works as an administrator in a care facility in the United Kingdom has been jailed for making unauthorised withdrawals from the savings of vulnerable patients in the facility. British newspaper, Evening Standard, reports that Akinremi was jailed for seven months for stealing the sum of £19,650 from the residents of Bostall House in Abbeywood southeast London. The mother of three started stealing from patients when she needed money for childcare, and continued to fund her lifestyle with the stolen funds. Akinremi, who pleaded guilty to three charges of fraud by abuse of position, had denied stealing money from the residents until trial began. She however admitted stealing £19,650 from three residents of the facility within eight months. Judge Angela Rafferty KC told Mrs Akinremi that it was “repeated and planned course of conduct, and a very serious breach of trust of vulnerable people.”

Actor 'Papa Ajasco' Is Dead

Veteran Nollywood actor, Femi Ogunrombi aka Papa Ajasco, is dead.   His death was confirmed by a theatre practitioner, Husseini Shaibu, via his Twitter handle.    He wrote, “I have just been reliably informed that the ethnomusicologist, former Music Instructor and one time stand in for the 'Papa Ajasco' character on the popular Wale Adenuga production comic series 'Papa Ajasco' Femi Ogunrombi is dead." He died on Saturday evening.  May his soul rest in peace.

I won’t steal nation’s wealth, Obi replies Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, said he would be committed to the development of the country if elected as the president of Nigeria in the forthcoming presidential election. He also pledged to be prudent in the management of public funds while in the office, saying he would not steal public funds. The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had earlier described Obi as a stingy man who could not be trusted with the future of the country. Abducted son of slain ex-CBN staff found dead in Ogun river

The lifeless body of the abducted son of the slain staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Kehinde Fatinoye, has been found in Ogun river. Fatinoye and his wife were murdered by yet-to-be-identified persons in their Ibara GRA residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. Their son was dragged away by the assassins alongside a domestic staff and threw them into the river along the Adigbe-Obada road. While the domestic staff reportedly escaped from the water, the son, Oreoluwa, was found dead, with his hands and legs tied. The Ogun State police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed that Oreoluwa was found dead in the river, saying the corpse is with the police. While saying investigation is still ongoing, Oyeyemi said the maid is also with the command. He added that the arrested suspect is still in custody, aiding police investigation. Meanwhile, the Fatinoye’s have been buried on Monday. The Ogun State Government is yet to react to the incident...

Mother and her three children declared missing in Enugu

A mother and her three children have been declared missing in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.  The woman identified as Chinyere, from Umuokpara Amagu Nachi, and her kids were last seen at about 6:00 am on Monday, January 2, 2023.  According to reports, family and friends have been going round the whole village in search of them with no success. Zimbabwean Rapper Beats Girlfriend For Exchanging Phone Number With Another Man

Zimbabwean rapper, Desmond 'stunner' Chideme, was reportedly arrested in Durban, South Africa, for beating his girlfriend.   According to a Zimbabwean media, ZW News, on Wednesday, the girlfriend gave her phone number to another man at a bar, a move which the rapper was not happy with and he physically assaulted her.
