A 45-year-old man, Idowu Owolabi, has been arrested for raping his 21-year-old daughter at Papa Olosun area of Oja-Odan, Ogun State, and then putting the blame on the devil. His arrest followed a complaint by his daughter, (names withheld) at Oja-Odan Police Division, Tuesday. The lady told policemen that the sacrilegious act began March last year, when she went to assist her father in the farm. According to her, “he forcefully had carnal knowledge of me and threatened to kill me if I told anyone. On the way home, he begged me and promised to give me whatever I wanted.

President Muhammadu Buhari today, said that Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, enjoyed immunity from prosecution as a sitting governor.  He also noted that under Nigerian laws, an accused remained innocent until proven guilty by the courts. Besides, the President noted that the alleged dollar bribes Ganduje was seen stuffing in his pockets in a video widely circulated on social media, had become a matter already in a law court. Buhari was reacting to criticisms in some quarters that he shielded his political associates like Ganduje among others, from prosecution in the face of glaring evidence.

The founder, Faith Revival Apostolic Church, Apostle Paul Adenuga, has described the stealing of female panties for money-making rituals as ‘very shameful.’ Adenuga condemned the act at the Christian Press of Nigeria breakfast meeting held in Lagos on Sunday. “You can imagine, some men go to steal women’s panties because they want to make sudden money and some of these men are caught and displayed on social media. What a shame,” he said.

Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, says the federal government will not accept foreign interference in the nation’s affairs. Shehu said this hours after the US, UK and EU reacted to the suspension of Walter Onnoghen, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN) by President Muhammadu Buhari. In separate statements, the countries said the action of Buhari could have effect on the general election. But Shehu said the Buhari administration is against actions capable of creating apprehension, distrust among citizens or undermining the transparency and acceptability of outcomes of the nation’s electoral process. “Nigeria reserves the right to be insulated from suggestions and or interference with respect to wholly internal affairs and commends international laws, customs and norms that mandate and require nations and the comity to respect this prerogative to all,” he said.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has said that the endorsement of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, by the Ohanaeze Nd’Igbo was done by members of his party who are also members of the Pan-Igbo association. He described the endorsement as “partisan.” Ngige said what played out was “a mere congregation of party men that hurriedly took a decision without due consultation with the real Ime-Obi Ohanaeze Nd’Igbo.”

More facts emerged in Abuja on Saturday on why Buhari could not wait for the court to determine the fate of the CJN. Onnoghen, it was gathered, was billed to inaugurate judges that will adjudicate over the conduct of the 2019 elections in the country.  The suspended judge had fixed Saturday (today) for the inauguration of the election petition panels. Journalists have been barred from accessing the house of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen. Our correspondent who tried to gain access to the house located close to the Supreme Court was denied entry by stern-looking security men comprised of policemen and men of Department of State Services. He was turned back by the men wearing presidential villa accreditation tag who told him his visit could not be permitted.  One of the men of the DSS, who questioned our correspondent, asked, “What is your mission here.”

These genes were found in more than 1,600 thin but healthy people, including women around a size eight and men with a 35-inch waist. Subscribers of MTN mobile phone and data services in Lokoja and its environs are presently experiencing difficulty in accessing the services of the provider. NAN reports that the development followed the decision of the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS) ) to shut the telecom service provider’s base stations in Lokoja, Obajana and other adjoining communities. There had been a lingering dispute between the revenue board and MTN over the latter’s non-remittance of taxes to the state government when due. Jamil Isah, director, legal services and enforcement of KGIRS, who led other staff to seal the base stations of MTN, said that the action commenced on Wednesday afternoon. According to Isah, the action is due to the refusal of the telecom service provider to remit outstanding tax liability of N120 million to the state government.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described plans by the federal government to increase value-added tax on specific items as cruel and anti-people. In a statement on Friday, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP spokesperson, said the move shows that President Muhammadu Buhari is insensitive to the plight of the citizens who are already groaning under economic hardship. On Wednesday, Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, had announced that the federal executive council was studying the possibility of a VAT increase and would take a request to the national assembly for an amendment of the VAT law. Ologbondiyan said unlike Buhari, Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the PDP, will properly harness resources and create wealth for the good of the citizens if elected as president.

The federal government says the N30,000 figure proposed by the tripartite committee for the new national minimum wage is a mere recommendation to the president. In a statement on Friday Illiya Rhoda, an assistant director in the ministry of labour, said those who are not pleased with the new minimum wage should take their case to the national assembly.  Illiya said President Muhammadu Buhari considered the report of the committee in full and that the council of state looked at the differing statistics and figures before arriving at N27,000. While the committee recommended N30,000 in line with the demands of the organised labour, the president transmitted a minimum wage bill containing N27,000 to the national assembly after its approval by the national council of state.

Former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, has declared the move by President Muhammadu Buhari to suspend the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen, as an unconstitutional action. President Muhammadu Buhari has just suspended the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. According to the President’s Special Assistant on New Media, Mr Bashir Ahmad. In his place, Ahmad said through his twitter handle, @BashirAhmaad, that Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed, was named by the President to replace Onnoghen. Punch

In a statement issued in Ilorin on Friday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the Federal Government is particular delighted that the statements came after it alerted the nation to the machinations of some opposition elements who are working to scuttle the 2019 polls through widespread violence. ”A few days ago, we alerted the nation to the plot by the opposition to orchestrate widespread violence in the country, using insurgents and criminal elements within and outside the country. Their plan is to scuttle the election and then push for an interim government, having realized they can’t win a free, fair, credible and peaceful elections.

The Osun Governorship Election Petition Tribunal Thursday in Abuja witnessed a stunning session as the Independent National Electoral Commission closed its submission without calling a single witness. To the consternation of the legal teams of All Progressives Congress and Governlr Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State, the commission, through its counsel, Adesina Agbede rose to apply for closure of their case. The counsel had staked his reputation the previous day when he promised that the witnesses would testify at yesterday’s proceedings. The Tribunal Chairman quickly came to the aid of the counsel by ruling that he did not have apply to close INEC’s defense, urging him to proceed with his case.

A man, Abdullahi Yada’u, has divorced his wife, Hafsat Suleiman, for her decision to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in the February presidential election. The couple, who live in the Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, had both voted for Buhari in the 2015 elections. Abdullahi, who spoke to the British Broadcasting Corporation Hausa Service on Thursday, said when he was not impressed by the performance of the President, he switched his loyalty to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar.

A former Minister of Education, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, on Friday faulted the claims by the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria following her withdrawal from the presidential race, describing the allegations as lies.  According to her, she decided to immediately sacrifice her candidacy to uphold her values by withdrawing. “Nigeria and Nigerians deserve a new order of ethical, competent and capable leadership. I had earlier assumed the ACPN was aligned with me to offer that, until it proved otherwise. The values and vision divergence with the party was a key factor that triggered my withdrawal from the presidential race on their ticket prompting me to dissociate immediately in order to help build a coalition for Good Governance. A video of soldiers pushing an apparently faulty armoured personnel carrier (APC) has surfaced online. In what appears a frontline in the fight against Boko Haram insurgents, the soldiers were heard saying “they are pushing APC by number. Nigerian army, there is problem.” An APC is a combat vehicle designed with arms and equipped to transport squad of soldiers.

Some residents of Ikeja area of Lagos State, on Thursday, apprehended a man for allegedly stealing bras and pants from where they were spread. It was learnt that some residents, who saw the man while allegedly collecting the underwear, accosted him and demanded to know the content of the bag he was carrying. He was said to have threatened to deal with the people for insulting him, but unmoved by his threat, some youths forced the man to open the bag. An eyewitness, Bayo Ojo, said when the man finally opened the bag, bras, pants and other clothing items were found in it.

Transparency International Nigeria has said the TraderMoni scheme, a collateral-free loan initiative targeted at petty traders and artisans as part of the National Social Investment Programme of the Federal Government, is a form of voter inducement. The chairman of the anti-corruption organisation, Awwal Rafsanjani, who spoke on Lunchtime Politics, a programme of Channels Television, noted that the initiative was an “official use of public funds in the name of TraderMoni to actually induce voters.”  Rafsanjani noted that the TraderMoni scheme was not a programme that was “part and parcel of the manifesto of the ruling party and it is not in Nigerian constitution.” He added, “It was not done three years ago. It was only started close to election time. So, the allegation by many Nigerians that this is clearly a case of vote buying using public funds goes contrary to our constitution and to having a free and fair election.
