Perhaps nature should not have blessed Nigeria - Azuka

Image
If countries could be categorised as “blessed” or “cursed” by nature, which countries should be put in the two categories? Using temperatures and climates, countries with extreme temperatures of cold or hot should be categorised as cursed. A country where temperatures can drop to as low as 10°C should be in that category as junior members, while those with temperatures as low as 0°C to as low as -20°C should be senior members of that group. How can human beings live inside a deep freeze and feel that it is normal? Countries with temperatures as high as 36°C and above should also be part of that group. The countries with very low temperatures experience extreme cold, while the countries with very high temperatures usually have arid terrain. Rainfall is rare in countries with high temperatures. Drought is common. The land is not good for planting, making food production hard. These countries should also be categorised as cursed by nature. However, the irony of it all is that most of th

Wow! Queen Naomi in a statement released on her Instagram page said she's no longer Ooni of Ife Olori (Queen). "I bless the Lord almighty for His faithfulness in the last 3years of my marriage. In life's journey, it isn't how far. Still, how well, indeed though satan should buffet if trials should come, I have this blessed assurance controlling all situations and saying to me it is well with my soul. Certainly, it is well. I made my journey into the ancient throne of Ife with faith in my heart and love for the keeper of it. Few impressions I would love to correct. If anyone knows otherwise, they are free to come up with facts. Let it be known that this decision to move on did not come because his majesty is married to another queen. As many would love to assume, throughout our life as a couple, I was the only married wife to him. There were side attractions, but it was never an issue. I never approached him with any revelation of any sort, as many believed he conta

FG May Borrow To Pay Debts Unless Revenues Rise, Expert Warns

Image
A financial analyst and CEO of Cowry Assets Management, Johnson Chukwu, has warned that the federal government might end up borrowing to pay the debts it is owning, if measures are not taken to shore up its revenue. Mr. Chukwu, who was speaking on TVC Journalist Hangout and monitored by our reporter, stated that since the government is borrowing to pay salaries and wages, it is time to take steps to limit borrowing. He pointed out that the use of 90 per cent of the country’s total revenue to pay debt interest and not the principal debt portends problems that revenues generated will not be enough to pay workers’ salaries. “Ninety per cent of the country’s total revenue is used to pay debt interest; we are left to 10 per cent to pay salaries and wages. For the past five years, every money borrowed was to fund infrastructures and pay salaries. Last year was an abnormal year so it can be excused for borrowing but subsequent years should not follow the pattern,” Chukwu said. “It must be

Image
A brawl broke out on the floor of Ghana's parliament late on Monday as lawmakers debated a proposed tax on electronic transactions that has divided the house for weeks. The 1.75% e-levy, which would include taxes on mobile money payments, has been fiercely challenged by the opposition since it was first proposed last month and held up the passing of the national budget. Members of parliament rushed the front of the chamber after Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu suggested the tax be debated and voted upon under a hastened "urgency" procedure. Some threw punches and grappled while others restrained their colleagues.

Ogunkolade said, “The states that are owing pensions are Imo, Abia, Ondo, Osun. Benue is a major culprit owing about 27 months. Ondo pays 60 per cent of the pension. The states are also not implementing the increases like the 24 per cent increment in July 2010 till date; most of the states have not implemented the consequential adjustment announced by the Federal Government.” He also disclosed that only Lagos and

Use Veto Power on Electoral bill if Buhari refuses to sign - Adegboruwa tells National Assembly

Image
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has asked the National Assembly to use veto power on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill if the President, Muhammadu Buhari refuses to sign. In a statement, the Lagos-based lawyer said the absence of Buhari should not affect the passage of the bill into law. This is as the 30-day period within which the President is expected to assent or withhold his approval to the bill ends today. The bill was transmitted to the President on November 19, 2021 after both chambers passed it. He said, “On November 13, 2021, the National Assembly forwarded the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill to the President for his assent. The court, presided over by Justice D. E. Osiagor, held that only the local government marriage registries were empowered to do such by the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He submitted that the conduct of marriages and issuance of certificates were statutorily the job of the local governments as provided by the law. The judge added that the acts of the federal government through the Ministry of Interior, operating marriage registries was beyond their powers and held that all marriages conducted by federal marriage registries or through their agents were illegal and invalid. Emirates: Buhari told me he’s ruling Nigeria as he did in 1984, Hadi Sirika says

Image
Aviation minister Hadi Sirika has said President Muhammadu Buhari recently told him the ongoing retaliation against Emirates Airlines reflects some actions he took when he was Nigeria’s military dictator in the early to mid-1980s. Mr Sirika said this while addressing a group of northern Muslims in the wake of Nigeria’s ban on Emirates Airlines in purported retaliation over the Gulf country’s restriction of Air Peace’s flights to only one per week. But the UAE in a December 10 letter to Mr Sirika said it was only Sharjah authorities who restricted Air Peace’s flight slots and not the UAE as a whole. In fact, the letter said Air Peace will be granted the remaining two slots out of the three it requested to fly into other UAE airports. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have international airports, but Air Peace only currently flies to Sharjah, which is a separate and independent emirate just northeast of Dubai, the UAE’s commercial capital. Mr Sirika in a WhatsApp group discussion with members o

Part of the statement read, “Like every other Nigerian and a parent for that matter, Chief Adedoyin is saddened by the death of the young man. “And for the avoidance of any doubt, Chief Adedoyin is not only an educationist and hotelier but also an established business man with investments in different other sectors of the economy. “So, he does not involve in the day-to-day running of the hotel and indeed his other business establishments as such roles are left in the hands of hundreds of his employees. “We therefor

Buhari doesn’t understand Igbos; they want appointments, not development - Ngige

Image
Igbos in the South-East prefer political appointments to infrastructural development in their region, but President Muhammadu Buhari does not understand that, says Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige. “My people love appointments. That’s where this president (Mr Buhari) didn’t get them well,” Mr Ngige said. He (Mr Buhari) felt that by giving infrastructure: if I empower you through your fertilizer plant in Ebonyi state, give loans, credits and grants to farmers in Abakaliki, Ebonyi, Imo, that our people will be happy. But these people love appointments.” Mr Ngige disclosed this in an interview with Channels TV on Tuesday. He asserted that though former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan gave more Igbos political appointments during their tenures, the South-East remained underdeveloped. According to him: "We had plenty of appointments during Obasanjo and Jonathan. For example, the Enugu airport has been dilapidated over the years. We have had four aviation ministers
