Redundancy: Katsina to deploy directors as classroom teachers

Katsina State government is to look into the possibility of redeploying redundant directors in the state ministry of education to classrooms to address shortages of teachers. Governor Aminu Bello Masari said this yesterday when he received the midterm report of the Restoration Committee on Education.  There are about 600 directors in the state ministry of education with most of them not having any schedule of duties. FG spends over N4bn on North East humanitarian projects

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Health has committed over N4 billion to interventions addressing the on-going humanitarian crisis in the Northeast. The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole made this disclosure during the commemoration of the 2017 World Humanitarian Day in Abuja. The sum was used in purchasing relief materials including drugs and medical consumables, hospital equipment, capacity building and deployment of volunteer health workers. He stressed that the crisis is both unprecedented and protracted and that the Ministry has deployed a two pronged approach aimed at providing basic medical services to the affected population and strengthening the pillars of the region’s health system.

Mother docked for allegedly pouring pepper in daughter’s sex organ

A business woman, Mercy​ Segun, 42, was on Wednesday arraigned at a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja for allegedly beating her daughter and pouring pepper into her sex organ. Segun, who resides at Idu Gbagyi, Karmo, is facing a three-count charge of criminal force, assault and causing hurt to a minor. The Prosecutor, Mrs Florence Auhioboh, told court that the defendant’s neighbour, one Gift Afegua, reported the matter at the Karmo Police Station on Aug. 22.

Court remands pastor in prison for alleged possession of human skull and Sleeping with female members in Osun

An Osun State Magistrate court sitting in Ipetu, on Monday remanded a pastor in charge of a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Edunabon, Adeyemo Adedayo in prison custody for allegedly being in possession of human skull. Presiding Magistrate, Mr Olakunle Faith Idowu who gave the order declared that the suspect be kept behind the bar because of the criminal nature of the offence committed. It would be recalled the human head was found under a big mortal kept in the bamboo constructed in the church which was located at Anglican High School, Edunabon, Ife North Local Government Area. The 43-year-old pastor, Adeyemo popularly called Efa-Efa was arrested following the tip off from some people residing in the community.

JAMB okays 120 marks for Universities, 100 for Polytechnics

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said yesterday that 120 marks in Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination will be the minimum marks required by candidates to get admission into any university. The minimum cut-off marks for admission into polytechnics and colleges of education was agreed to be 100 marks at the meeting while innovative enterprise institutions had 110 as minimum admission marks.

Ekiti APC celebrate Buhari’s return, blast Fayose over ‘death-wish’

For several hours on Monday, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State and the coalition of civil society groups staged a peaceful rally to celebrate the return of President Muhammadu Buhari to Nigeria after medical treatment in London. Speakers at the rally made up of leaders of the party and various groups, descended heavily on Governor Ayodele Fayose over the statement credited to him that President Buhari, had been placed on life support since June 6 in the London hospital.

The meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will not hold today. Presidential spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, said this in am statement this morning. The FEC meeting holds every Wednesday and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo presided over the meeting for over three months during Buhari's 103 days in London. President Buhari resumed work on Monday having returned from his medical vacation in the United Kingdom on Saturday.

It was learnt that some strangers have been prowling Magu’s residence in Maiduguri. Some policemen have been deployed in Magu’s uncompleted bungalow in Karshi, Abuja. Ondo workers reject modulated salary

Labour unions in Ondo State have kicked against the state government’s plan to pay fractional parts of their outstanding salaries and pensions from the second tranche of the Paris Club fund. Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), in July, confirmed the receipt of N7.6 billion by the state as part of the Paris Club refund. The governor pledged not to spend the money until a meeting was held with labour leaders on the modality for payment.

The Presidency said it paid N6.2 billion 14 states during the school year ending this month for the feeding of 2,827,691 students out of the three million targeted for this year. The Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, listed the benefitting states as Anambra, Enugu, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Delta, Abia, Benue, Plateau, Bauchi, Taraba and Kaduna. He said a total of 33,895 cooks had been engaged in the communities where the schools were located across the 14 states.

Four secondary school students steal N1.4m laptops in Jigawa

Four final year students of Government Science and Technical College, Karniya in Yankwashe Local Government Area of Jigawa State have been arrested over theft of 18 sets of mini laptop computers valued at about N1.4 million. The spokesperson of the Jigawa State Command of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), DSC Adamu Shehu, disclosed this over the weekend in Dutse. The suspects – Shehu Abdulrazak, Abdullahi Suleman, Sani Abdulraham and Yakubu Abdullahi – are between the ages of 15 and 17.  They broke into their school ICT centre and carted away 12 sets of the mini laptops while the school was on holiday.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced N47.2Billion and $487.5million in cash and properties to the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, according to an article written by officials of the anti-graft agency. The article titled ‘Diezani Alison-Madueke: What an Appetite!’ was jointly written by Tony Orilade and Aishah Gambari of the Public Affairs Directorate of the EFCC. It detailed properties and money allegedly owned by the former minister.

Baby falls into fire during couple’s fight over infidelity

The police on Tuesday arraigned a 42-year-old driver, Igwe Dike, before a Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Ikeja, for allegedly beating his wife, Nkiru Egbo, with a plank which left her and their son seriously injured. Dike was arraigned on two counts of assault and causing of grievous bodily harm, which he pleaded not guilty to. According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Simon Imhowa, the incident happened on July 30, 2017, at the couple’s residence on Ferry Street, Mile 2, Lagos.

Medical trip: Buhari has not violated any law — Senate

The Senate yesterday said President Muhammadu Buhari has not violated the law over his long absence from duty, while on medical vacation in the United Kingdom. There have been protests by groups that the president, who left for UK on May 7 for follow-up consultations with his doctors, should either return to the country or resign. In a statement by its spokesperson, Senator Aliyu Sabiu Abdullahi, the Senate said “The president has broken no law and therefore we do not see any justification for this diversion and noise making. The victim who got curious of an app called ‘Video Locker’ on her husband’s phone opened it up to take a look.   The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, said the National Assembly was ready to consider and pass a new Minimum Wage Bill whenever it was presented by the executive. The fake Doctor, Jonathan Ibrahim  Nasarawa State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has said that a fake medical doctor arrested for allegedly infecting a six-year-old boy with HIV through unscreened blood transfusion has tested positive to the virus. NSCDC Commandant in the state Lawan Bashir-Kano, who disclosed this to journalists in Lafia yesterday, said investigation into the case revealed that both the 30-year-old fake doctor Jonathan Ibrahim and his wife tested positive to the HIV virus.

The Special Assistant to the President on Prosecutions, Okoi Obono-Obla, has said there will be consequences for the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu, if the anti-graft agency fails to act on the letter written to him by Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice. The accused persons; Godwin Ukrakpor (70), Uche Esegine (22), Taiwo Omogoroye (42), Austin Oni (39) and Meshak Owuh (28); who were arraigned on a two-count charge, allegedly committed the offence at about 5 am on 1 July 2017, at Sapele Road, Benin City, while returning from a vigil.

Three women rape pastor who tried to collect debt they owed

Three women have appeared in court after a pastor said they raped him.  Two of the women are alleged to have pinned the man down on a bed, while the third carried out the sex attack.  A magistrates’ court in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, was told that the victim was owed money by the attackers and he went to their home to collect it. They invited him into the house, but once he was inside, he said, he was grabbed around the waist and his trousers were pulled down by a second who then groped him.   The women Sandra Ncube, 21, Riamuhetsi Mlauzi, 23, and Mongiwe Mpofu, 25, denied rape, but pleaded guilty to indecent assault.

Ritual killers butcher 73 year old pensioner in Ekiti

Some assailants, suspected to be ritual killers, on Tuesday killed a 73-year-old pensioner, Mrs. Adetutu Ajayi, in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State. Adetutu, the daughter of a former Accountant General of the Old Western Region, Mr. Samuel Sotoowa, was butchered at her residence on Moferere Street, in the Ajilosun area of Ado Ekiti. The deceased was found in a pool of blood in her three-bedroomed bungalow by church members around 11am, with her fingers cut off. Different parts of her body also had machete cuts.

Gunmen on in the early hours of today kidnapped the Ikeja Local Government Clerk, Shamsideen Omotayo.  spokesman for the local council secretariat, Bello Onilegbale told newsmen that the clerk was whisked away at Imota, near Ikorodu, while on his way to work.
