The Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar on Wednesday said, contrary to the claim by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Attorney-General, the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, had cleared him of the alleged bribery levelled against him. Umar said this in response to Saraki’s lawyer, Mr. Ajibola Oluyede, while arguing the Senate President’s motion asking the tribunal chairman to disqualify himself from further presiding over the trial. Oluyed anchored the motion on the grounds that there would be a likehood of bias in Umar’s handling of the trial because he remained under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for bribery. Fake FG worker arrested for selling appointment letters

No fewer than 21 job seekers have fallen victims to a fake official of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abayomi Owoyale, after giving him money to secure teaching jobs. Owoyale, who is currently in detention at the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, Lagos State, was said to have sold each of the letters, purportedly signed by the permanent secretary of the ministry, for N60,000. While some paid in cash, others reportedly paid into a Zenith Bank account number 2170004060, bearing Fajemisin Olakunle Owoyale.

20-yr-old gives birth in Aba prison

A 20-year-old female inmate of the Aba Prisons, Blessing Azubuike who was arraigned before an Abia state Magistrate court over alleged child stealing has given birth to a baby boy.  Sources at the Nigerian Prisons, Aba  said that the mother and her child are in good and stable health conditions.  Recall that Blessing was arraigned before a Magistrate court sitting at Osisioma Ngwa presided over by Chief Magistrate Grace Ukeje.

Some human rights groups have advised President Muhamamdu Buhari to resign if he cannot end the incessant killings of innocent citizens by Fulani herdsmen. In a statement on Wednesday, the coalition under the aegis of Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ), which hinted that they have concluded arrangements to storm the presidential villa in Abuja to register their anger, sympathized with the governments and people of the affected States and Communities.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank Plc, Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, and some officials for allegedly receiving $115m from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke. The EFCC also arrested the bank’s Head of Operations, Mr. Martins Izuogbe, for his role in the alleged scam, which the anti-graft agency described as unprecedented. Police arrest Mercy Aigbe and brother in Osogbo

Popular Yoruba actress, Mercy Aigbe, was on Wednesday arrested by heavily armed policemen at the Olaiya Junction area of Osogbo, the Osun State capital. A witness told our correspondent that the policemen fired three gunshots into the air before whisking the actress and her brother, who drove her in a Honda Accord car away to an unknown place. It was not clear why the police team arrested her, but our correspondent gathered that the policemen were on a stop-and-search when they saw a police cap on the dashboard of Aigbe’s car.

Command arrests fake policeman with bags of hemp

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a fake Superintendent of Police, George Oliseh, with 10 bags of weed suspected to be cannabis. The suspect, who wore police uniform and had an identity card which bore the rank, was reportedly arrested on Sunday at Sagamu, Ogun State, while bringing the bags of hemp from Owo, Ondo State, in his Toyota Camry car with number plate, RSH 101 RE.

Soldiers torture lawyer who accused them of causing gridlock

A Lagos-based lawyer, Olajide Sipe, is in a critical condition at a private hospital after he was tortured and shot at by some soldiers on the 7th Avenue, FESTAC Town, Lagos State.  It was learnt that the officers were deployed in the community to guard the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipelines. They were, however, said to have left their duty post for the Mobil Filling Station on 23 Road to coordinate motorists queueing for fuel on Tuesday.

NLC, TUC propose N56,000 as new minimum wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have jointly proposed N56,000 as the new minimum wage to the Federal Government as against the present N18,000. president, Ayuba Wabba, said this at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja. Wabba said both the NLC and the TUC made the formal demand on the proposed national minimum wage to the Federal Government on Tuesday.

Youths occupy NASS, protest delay of 2016 budget passage

Hundreds of youths, under the aegis of Citizens United for Peace and Stability, CUPS, yesterday stormed the National Assembly calling for immediate resignation of Senate President, Saraki, on the allegations of corruption leveled against him and controversies surrounding the 2016 budget yet to be signed into law. Meanwhile, the National Assembly leadership was, at press time, set to commence a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in a move aimed towards resolving the crisis arising from the passage of the 2016 budget. 

Policeman’s wife stabs neighbour for laughing at her

There was a breach of the peace on Etunrere Street in the Ikorodu area of Lagos on Monday after the wife of a policeman attached to the state police command allegedly stabbed her neighbour, Mrs. Olaitan Ayobami. The cop’s wife, Mrs. Desola Ochoche, fled the residence afterwards, leaving Ayobami for dead. Ayobami was later rushed to a private hospital in the area.

Train crushes hairdresser, motorcyclist in Kwara

A nursing mother, identified simply as Mama Kafila, and a commercial motorcyclist ( okada   rider) were said to have been crushed to death on Sunday by a train around Olunlade in the Ilorin-Offa route  in Kwara State. Sources said the woman, who was a hairdresser, was being conveyed by the unnamed   okada   rider to buy ice blocks for sale when they met their deaths. Our correspondent gathered that the train dragged the two victims to a distance of about 100 metres after it hit them.

Online car dealer defrauds neighbour of N5m

The police in Lagos arraigned an Internet car dealer, Abiola Akinlonu, before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on Monday for alleged conversion of N5m into personal use. It was learnt that the defendant was arrested by the police in January 2016 by operatives of the Special Fraud Unit in Ikoyi, Lagos, for reportedly defrauding a neigbour, Ikena Ezeoka, of the sum. The duo lived on Abbi Street, Mende, in the Maryland area.   Ezeoka was said to have approached the defendant, who usually came home with different vehicles, sometime in 2013 that he needed two vehicles – a Ford Explorer 2007/2008 model and a Range Rover 2007 model. Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dr. Pius Odubu, yesterday, denied allegations that he sponsored native doctors to kill his boss, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, saying that the allegation was being fuelled by mischief makers and blackmailers who are bent on destroying his cordial relationship with the governor. Odubu also raised alarm over alleged plots by some persons to circulate fliers in Benin City with a view to further destroying his image and compounding the crisis between him and the governor.

Malaria killed 400,000 persons in 2015, says WHO

A new report by the World Health Organisation has stated that 400, 000 persons died of malaria infections in 2015.   In a report released in Geneva, Switzerland as part of activities to celebrate the World Malaria Day on Monday, WHO estimated that 21 countries including six African countries, would eliminate local transmission of malaria by 2020. The global body in the report titled, “Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030,” said there had been a significant reduction in the population of children and adults dying of the disease in the last one year.

Two men, Oyindamola Ajowa (34) and Owolabi Akorede (27), allegedly lured a lady to their house, drugged her, took picture of her naked body and threatened to post it on social media if she refused to pay them N50,000. The principal suspect, Ajowa, had confessed to the police in Ibadan, Oyo State that he committed the act because of a misunderstanding he had with the victim. Kachikwu blames fuel crisis on diversion to Cameroon, Chad

As the scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit continues to take a toll on motorists and other consumers in most parts of the country, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, on Monday said the trucks conveying the product were being diverted to Cameroon and Chad. Kachikwu, who stated this in Lagos at a town hall meeting, said the fuel scarcity had persisted mainly because the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation could not track the trucks being used to convey the product to filling stations. N1.4bn fraud: Court sentences Ex-Kogi lawmaker to 154 years in prison

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Monday, secured the conviction of a former member of the Kogi State House of Assembly and former Caretaker Chairman, Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area of the state, Gabriel Daudu, for a N1.4 billion fraud. Daudu, who was first arraigned in April 2010, was prosecuted by the EFCC on a 208 count charge bordering on money laundering and misappropriation of public funds.

Deeper Life to pay Celestial Church N5m for trespass

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division has upheld a Lagos High Court judgment ordering the Registered Trustees of Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) to pay N5 million as damages for trespass on land owned by the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC). CCC had, through its representative, Joseph Ebhodaghe, sued DCLM over a disputed land measuring approximately 1055.864 square meters, situated at Mulero area of Agege and registered as No. 75 Volume 2004T at the Lagos State Land Registry, Ikeja.

Police arraign 2 for stealing $14 million from church

The Police in Ogun on Monday arraigned two men, Akapo Paul, 73, and Johnson Shorinnolu, 63, for allegedly stealing 14 million dollars belonging to the West African Christian Mission. They appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court The accused, whose addresses are unknown, are facing two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has accused Governor Ayodele Fayose of alleged complicity in the fuel supply crisis in the state. In a statement by Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the party said it was in possession of “incontrovertible evidence” that the governor is allegedly contributing to the scarcity of fuel in the state to sabotage the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Truck rams into herd of cattle, two persons die

Two persons died on Sunday after a truck loaded with sand rammed into a herd of cattle being led by Fulani herdsmen around 2am at the Obada Oko end of the old Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The victims were the driver of the truck and his assistant, popularly called   motor boy . Teenager kills landlady, daughter, grandchildren, reports to police

An 18-year-old man, identified simply as Sunday, is currently in the police custody in Abuja after he allegedly killed his parents’ landlady, identified only as Mama Moses. The suspect was also accused of killing the landlady’s daughter and her three grandchildren. It was gathered that the suspect, who lived with his parents in the landlady’s residence at Tudun-Fulani, in the Bwari area of the Federal Capital Territory, reported himself to the police after committing the crime.

President Muhammadu Buhari last night appealed to Nigerians to bear with him over the difficulties in the land, saying Nigerians were seeing the darkest days before dawn. A popular native doctor, Chief Onupka Nwite was weekend reportedly murdered by suspected cultists in his shrine in Ndulo Ukwuagba Ngbo, Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi state.  Nwite was killed at about 8:00pm Friday, in front of his shrine, as the suspects took to their heels after the dastardly act.
