A band of terrorists today attacked a convoy of the Emirs of Gwoza, Uba and Askira who were travelling to Gombe for the funeral of the late Emir of Gombe.  Troops deployed in Garkida responded to the attack. A woman has been charged over an alleged theft from a charity fund set up in the memory of St Clears crash victim Laura Rees.  Natalie Thomas, 25, was charged with theft last week and is due to appear at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. Friend Laura was killed in a head-on car crash in October 2012 as she went to visit her best friend shortly before the friend was due to get married. Laura, who was supposed to be a bridesmaid at the wedding, died just hours after she had picked up her dress and got her nails done ahead of her friend's big day. The nursery worker, who was buried in her bridesmaid dress, was due to spend the night at the bride's house to discuss plans for the wedding. Tsada village of Dutse Local Government Area is15 minutes drive from the state capital. It  was there that a 45-year-old man, Malam Nura Ahmed Jigawa Tsada was apprehended by members of the public and handed over to the Police last week for committing sodomy with a 10-year-old boy. The presiding judge, Justice Ubale Ahmed Taura, said the 45-year-old man has confessed to the crime which made the court sentence him to 12 years in prison to serve as a lesson to others. According to the judge, the court jailed him based on facts gathered and his confessional statement in court. The judge explained that the sodomy case went against Section 284 of the Jigawa Penal Code, adding that the court has observed an increase in rape and sodomy cases reported to security agencies in the state. The convict however has the right to appeal the  judgment within three months.

A businessman identified as Chief Bright Igwegbu, was yesterday shot dead by unknown gunmen at Mile Two area of Lagos. It could, however, not be ascertained whether the gunmen were robbers or assassins, as the Police said they had commenced investigation into the killing. The late Igwegbu popularly known as Aku or Bruzel, who hailed from Imo State, was reportedly driving in his ML 450 Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV, when his assailants were said to have emerged from nowhere and shot him in the neck and head.

A medicine dealer, Uzochukwu Okeke, has been arrested by the officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency with 2.540 kilogramme of cocaine hidden inside laptop bags. The agency told our correspondent that the 39-year-old man said he committed the offence to ensure that his pregnant wife was well taken care of after birth. While confessing to the crime, the chemist also claimed that he raised N800, 000 from his colleagues owing to his inability to secure employment having lived for five months in Brazil. “My intention of going to Brazil was to work at the world football event facilities under construction. I was in Brazil for five months, but could not secure a job. After I exhausted my little savings, life became very unbearable. The only help available was drug trafficking. The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man, Mr. Paul Obiefule, for allegedly beating his 12-year-old relative to death. The relative, who was identified as Onyedikachi Mbanozo, was staying with Obiefule, a bricklayer, and his wife on Omitola Street in the Agege area of Lagos. PUNCH Metro   learnt that Onyedika, as the boy was fondly called, was the son of Obiefule’s wife’s brother. It was further gathered that the boy was beaten to death on Monday evening around 8.30pm, while the neighbours reported the matter at the Pen Cinema Police Division on Tuesday. An unidentified man has been crushed to death while attempting to board a train in motion at the Yaba Railway Market, Lagos State. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday at about 4pm, was said to have caused commotion in the area as people ran in different directions. The man, who was an electrician on his way back from work, was said to have approached the train at full speed, but lost his balance and slipped, while the train dragged him, dislodging some parts of his body and eventually slitting his throat. His working tools, which included a soldering iron, screw drivers and masking tapes could be seen close to his body. (Viewers discretion advised)

  When life seemed hopeless, this woman in China scrambled to the very top of a billboard to end it all by jumping. Fortunately for her, a quick-witted policeman saw a way to save her life. Rather than let the woman throw her life away, the cop whipped out his handcuffs, put one on himself and the other on her. Unable to jump, a rope was employed by the police to pull the woman to safety. Hopefully, she will get help to overcome whatever drove her to desperation.

Rolf Harris' own daughter accused him of abusing her best friend, a court heard today.   Bindi Harris was 'beside herself' and was 'banging her head against a wall' during an irate phone call she made to him in 1997. Ms Harris, now 50, also smashed some of his art after his alleged victim said the star abused her from the age of 13, the jury was told. Southwark Crown Court was told the conversation took place in the late 1990s while Harris was overseas. The woman, a childhood friend of Bindi, had confided in her after a night of drinking together 17 years ago when Ms Harris asked her: 'Did he touch you?', the court heard previously. The Osun State Muslim Community has asked the state police command to carry out a thorough investigation into a Boko Haram scare allegedly plotted by a pastor of a Baptist Church in Ikonifin, Olaoluwa Local Government Area. The General Secretary of OSMC, Alhaji Hashim Olapade, and the first Vice President, Alhaji Mustafa Olawuyi, said this in a petition to the Commissioner of Police in the state. A copy of the petition, which was copied to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 11, the Director of Department of Security Services, Osun State and Governor Rauf Aegbesola, was made available to our correspondent on Thursday. The Muslim leaders alleged that the pastor and three members of the church, who on Sunday May 18 were dressed in Islamic costumes, rode on motorcycles and threw explosives into the church during a service. The petitioners claimed that the incident, which happened between 11am and 12 noon, caused confusion in the town.

Pension stipends received by professors and permanent secretaries will be augmented by the Federal Government when the new Pension Reform Act is eventually passed into law, investigation has revealed. This development will enable them to continue to earn their full salaries in retirement even when they don’t have enough funds in their Retirement Savings Accounts, unlike other retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme. The National Pension Commission had told the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service and the House of Representatives Committee on Pension that some categories of workers were unable to get sufficient pension stipends as provided by the law. These include top public servants like permanent secretaries, police officers, professors and others whose conditions of service prior to the enactment of the Pension Reform Act, 2004 allowed them to enjoy 100 per cent of their final pay as pension for life.

The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State deepened on Thursday as a former governor of the state and national leader of the party, Chief Olusegun Osoba, foreclosed reconciliation with the governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. He said this during a consultative meeting with his loyalists at his Ibara home in Abeokuta. The APC in Ogun has been bedevilled with internal crisis which led to the emergence of parallel executive councils. One of the groups is loyal to Amosun while the other pitches its tent with Osoba. Osoba, explained that neither the intervention by traditional rulers nor the national leadership who might suggest harmonisation of the executive in any format would make him change his stance. A former Governor of Oyo State, Rasheed Ladoja, on Thursday lost one of his sons in an auto crash on the Eko Bridge in Lagos. The deceased, identified as Adebola Ladoja, was driving a Golf saloon car, marked, AKD 107 CJ, and was said to be on his way to Lagos Island when a Daf truck, with number plate, JJJ 59 XA, driven by one Justice Oseghai, rammed into his car on the Eko Bridge. An eyewitness said the driver of the Daf truck, who was on top speed, lost control of his vehicle, rammed into the median of the bridge, before he eventually crashed into the deceased’s car. A gang of men - including at least one police officer - allegedly raped and killed two teenage sisters in rural India then hung their bodies from a tree, authorities said today. Villagers found the girls, aged 14 and 15, hanging in a mango tree hours after they disappeared near their home in Katra village in Uttar Pradesh state. They had gone into fields because there was no toilet in their home. Hundreds of angry villagers crowded around the tree for the rest of the day, silently protesting alleged police inaction in the case. India tightened its anti-rape laws last year, making gang rape punishable by the death penalty, even in cases where the victim survives. The new laws came after the fatal gang rape in 2012 of a 23-year-old woman on a moving bus in New Delhi that triggered nationwide protests.

A pair of amorous feral peacocks are making neighbours’ lives a misery - by screeching throughout the night. The loved-up pair of birds mysteriously arrived in Whalley   Range   a few weeks ago and have been keeping people up during the night ever since. Desperate residents even called in the police to try and track down the owners. But neighbours living on streets off Alexandra Road say it is a mystery where the birds came from - but are desperate for them to be re-homed so they can get some sleep. While the peahen is content to sit on garden fences, the peacock struts around back gardens, displaying his feathers and emitting piercing shrieks from 3am onwards. Residents say the pea hen first arrived around a month ago with the peacock flying in about two weeks later - and the birds are now inseparable.

Award winning author, civil rights activist, poet and phenomenal woman Maya Angelou has died at the age of 86.   BBC news   reported her death this afternoon. Maya had reportedly been battling serious health problems.   Maya was born Marguerite Ann Johnson on April 28 1928. She had a tumultuous childhood with her parents' marriage being in calamity which eventually ended in divorce, and as a toddler she experienced sexual molestation at the hands of her   mother's boyfriend .   Despite having a difficult childhood and living a hard life as a young adult, Maya emerged to become one of the most influential black female voices in the world.
