Actress, Chinedu Bernard slumps in church, dies

Actress Chinedu Bernard has slumped in a church and confirmed dead in a hospital. The ‘Big Mama’s Stick’ actress was reportedly confirmed dead by doctors at the East Side hospital in Enugu State. She was said to have slumped while cleaning the Chapel of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church inside Federal Housing area in Enugu State. It was learnt one of the Reverend Fathers rushed her to the hospital with some members of the church. Reports said a Reverend Father, Fr. Uchendu Chukwuma assisted in taking the late actress to the hospital, but the ‘Last Manhood’ actress was declared dead by the doctors. The cause of the late Bernard’s death remains unknown. The late Bernard’s remains have been deposited in the morgue. Fondly referred to as ‘Choco,’ the late Bernard featured in movies such as The Big Mama’s Stick, Money fever, The Mad, The Last Manhood, Mad Love etc.

FG trains 177 youths in smartphone repairs with N5.9bn

The Federal Government, on Thursday, confirmed committing the sum of N5.9 billion on training, tooling and monthly stipends for the Batch C beneficiaries of the N-Power Programme in Kano State. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disasters Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq made the disclosure at the closing ceremony of not less than 177 youths, who benefited, from the government’s training on Smart Phone Repairs and Services under the N-Skills programme, a component of the N-Power programme in Kano. The Minister, who was represented by the Special Assistant to the President on N-Skills, Dr Nasir Mahmoud, disclosed that about 16,629 youths were currently benefiting from the programme (under Batch C) in the state, noting that about 18,042 had already benefitted in the Batch A and B of the programme.

The Osun state Police Command paraded suspects arrested at different locations in the state for crime, Osun state Police PRO, Yemisi Opalola said officers arrested three men; Muideen Nafiu, Yusuf Muslim and Rabiu Fatai, who allegedly killed a widow, Aisat Yekeen, and dismembered her corpse for ritual purposes in Ileogbo, Osun state. Responding to questions from Newsmen, the prime suspect in the crime, Nafiu, an Islamic cleric, who runs an Arabic school in Ileogbo, said his accomplice, Yusuf, killed and dismembered the deceased when they met in his room. He, however, admitted collecting the hands of the woman, which his accomplice intended to use for him for money ritual.

The Osun State Police Command, on Tuesday, said its officers have arrested a 28-year old hunter, Jimoh Sulaimon, who allegedly shot dead a 78-year old cleric, Yusuf Adegun. Addressing newsmen at the Osun Police Command headquarters in Osogbo, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, Yemisi Opalola, said, Adegun, who until his death, was the Chief Imam of Alaguntan village, was shot dead by the suspect, resident in the same village. Opalola said when the suspect was arrested, he confessed to the crime, saying he was on hunting expedition and aimed his dane gun at an antelope, which surprisingly turned to human being after he fired the shot. She said, “The suspect was arrested and confessed to the crime, that he was on hunting expedition when he saw an antelope in the bush which he shot with his dane gun. “He said he was surprised when he went to pick the antelope, and he met Baba Imam on the ground. Operatives of the Puff Ader Tactical Unit of the Rivers State Police Command have re-arrested two teenage siblings accused of defiling a set of twins (boy and girl), aged two years, in Aluu community, in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state. The mother of the twins, Mrs Clement Achinihu, who disclosed this to journalists in Port Harcourt, said she discovered her two children were defiled by her in-laws who came to spend holidays with her. Achinihu said while trying to dress up her daughter to sleep at night, she observed that her son could not sit properly on the bed. She noted that the boy later told her that her in-laws, aged 16 and 19, who resided with them, tampered with his anus. Achinihu said she immediately took the children to a hospital, where it was discovered that the hymen of her two-year-old female child was removed. The Lagos State Police Command has said the shooting by an officer attached to the command that led to the death of two businessmen during a birthday party in the Iyana Ipaja area of the state was accidental. The PUNCH had reported that a policeman serving at the state command headquarters in Ikeja went into hiding after allegedly shooting two businessmen to death. It was learnt that the cop, alongside the victims, and other guests, gathered at a bar to celebrate a friend’s birthday. But reacting to the incident in a statement on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, who identified the cop involved as Inspector Mohammed Hussini, said the suspect was an off-duty police officer.

Terrorism Act: Senate prohibits ransom payment to kidnappers

The Senate has passed a bill seeking to amend the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2013, which will prohibit the payment of ransom to kidnappers in Nigeria. The passage of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2013 (Amendment) Bill, 2022, followed the consideration of a report by the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters. The report was laid by the Committee’s Chairman, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), before consideration. Bamidele, in his presentation, said the bill seeks to outlaw the payment of ransom to abductors, kidnappers, and terrorists for the release of any person who has been wrongfully confined, imprisoned, or kidnapped. According to the lawmaker, “the overall import of this bill is to discourage the rising spate of kidnapping and abduction for ransom In Nigeria, which is fast spreading across the country.”

NSCDC official brutalises sisters over boyfriends, says it’s family affair

An official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, identified as Ezekiel, has been accused of brutalising his sisters for having boyfriends. Ezekiel was said to have visited his siblings, Amarachi and Chidinma, at their house in the Kuje area of Abuja and demanded the former’s phone. Amarachi, a microbiology student at the University of Abuja, reportedly refused to release her phone to him. Ezekiel was said to have flogged her with a stick and a cable, causing her bodily injuries. Chidinma claims to be 25 years old, while Amarachi says she is 19. They said their brother was always going through their phones and got furious anytime he saw a chat from their male friends. Rainstorm uproots trees, destroys vehicles, buildings in Lagos

An early morning rainstorm in some parts of Lagos State on Sunday left many residents counting their losses, as they bemoaned the destruction that followed the downpour. The rain, which started around 8am, fell for over three hours. A resident on Muri Okunola Street, near Burger Chicken, Victoria Island, Stan Evans, said the rainstorm uprooted trees in the community, which fell on at least five cars and several buildings. Power lines were not spared by the raging storm.

Six injured as church collapses during service in Badagry

No fewer than six members of the Deeper Life Bible Church, located in Iragbo community in Badagry, Lagos State, on Sunday, sustained serious degrees of injuries when the building of the church collapsed during a heavy storm while the service was in progress. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that heavy rain which was later followed by a heavy storm led to the collapse of the church building around 9:30 a.m. One of the members of the Church who was also a victim, Mr. Topohozin Tunde, told newsmen that six members of the church sustained serious injuries. “I also sustained a serious knee injury, but thank God no life was lost.

A businesswoman, Chinyere Emeka-Atu, has been accused of defrauding traders and market women of over N600m in Lagos State. The woman used her company, Family Food Support Association, to gather unsuspecting members of the public, including petty traders, to part away with N9,000 every month to get a higher return on their investments. The victims were said to have been promised a return of N200,000 cash and N90,000 worth of foodstuffs after nine months of investments in the association’s scheme. However, for proper coordination, the businesswoman reportedly created about 39 groups headed by an independent leader under the association. People from different parts of the country, who invested in the scheme, were reportedly divided into groups. The Presidency on Sunday attributed the delayed delivery of 12 Super Tucano jet fighters for the Nigerian Air Force to fight insecurity across the country to comments by those it described as “the opponents of the Nigerian government” including the Catholic Bishop of Diocese of Sokoto, Mathew Kukah. The Presidency revealed that the reasons given for the delay—poor interreligious relations between Christianity and Islam in the country—were compounded by constant lobbying of US Congress by the government’s opponents, including Kukah. Married woman butchered by her suspected ritualist boyfriend in Ondo

A married woman identified as Funmilola Osundare is currently battling for her life at the Federal Medical Center in Ondo State after she was butchered by her boyfriend for alleged ritual purposes. The victim, a mother of one, was said to have visited her lover at his home in Ijapo, Akure, three days before the attack. They were reportedly having a romantic moment when he suddenly attacked her with a machete, leaving her with varied degrees of machete injuries on her face, shoulders, and hands. The Federal Government on Friday approved the reopening of four additional land borders shut in August 2019 as part of efforts to curtail smuggling and boost local production of rice. A circular released by the Nigeria Customs Service, signed by Deputy Comptroller-General E. I. A Federal High Court in Abuja has sacked Yakubu Dogara, former speaker of the House of Representatives, from the National Assembly. The number four man in the country between 2015 and 2019 currently represents Bogoro/Dass Federal Constituency of Bauchi in the green chamber of Nigeria’s parliament. Dogara had defected to the PDP in 2020, citing a breakdown of governance under Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, where he hails from. In a letter of resignation addressed to the Bogoro ‘C’ Ward Chairman of the PDP dated July 24, 2020, Dogara said though he helped install Mohammed as governor in 2019, he could ask questions about the state of government without being accused of disloyalty. Elected speaker on the APC platform in 2015, he defected to the PDP after the National Assembly leadership fell out with President Muhammadu Buhari in the build-up to the 2019 elections. He had worked against the reelection of the then Governor Mohammed Abubakar whom Bala Mohammed defeated in 2019.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has directed the reopening of all Chrisland Schools in the State, as Lagos State Govt announced April 25 for all schools to resume for third term. Recall that Chrisland schools were shut down on April 18, 2022, by the State Government over the controversies and outrage that followed the viral sex tape of minors who are pupils of the school. Some pupils from the school, during a recent trip to Dubai to participate in the World School Games between March 10 and 13, 2022, engaged in a sexual act. However, the Lagos State Commissioner of Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, explained that the reopening of the school was to ensure that other students were not denied access to learning while an investigation into the issue continued.

Top Yoruba monarch, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has passed on, PREMIUM TIMES can report. Alaafin Adeyemi, the third from the Alowodu Ruling House, died in the late hours of Friday at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State in South-West Nigeria. The remains of the top Yoruba traditional ruler were brought to Oyo town, 62 kilometres from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in the early hours of Saturday and traditional rites began, palace sources told this newspaper. He was 83 years old and the longest reigning Alaafin ever, having ruled for 52 years. The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, is expected to make an official announcement upon receiving the report of the monarch’s passing from the Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi’, who will now lead Oyo town before a new Alaafin is installed. The monarch had been sick and a plan had been made to fly him abroad before he passed on late Friday night.

A 27-year-old Nigerian national simply identified as Victory has lost his life after he allegedly jumped from 21st floor of his condominium in Malaysia. It was gathered that the incident happened at Mutiara ville (21st floor. Block F2) in Cyberjaya on Tuesday afternoon, April 19, 2022. The reasons for his action are unknown, however, police are currently investigating the incident. The deceased hailled from Agbor in Delta State. Meanwhile, family members including one Prophetess Peach Joshua, claimed that Victory was pushed off the building. One Peter Rocly who claimed to have lived in the building and witnessed the incident said the deceased was murdered.

Pilgrims may pay N2.5m for 2022 hajj – NAHCON

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has projected that Nigerian pilgrims may pay as much as N2.5m to participate in the 2022 exercise. This is over 50 per cent increase from N1m paid by pilgrims in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic that stalled hajj activities. Speaking on Thursday at a meeting with executives of the state pilgrims board for the preparation of the 2022 hajj, NAHCON Chairman, Alhaji Zikrullah Hassan, said the projection of the increase was due to an increase in the foreign exchange rate, rise in inflation by almost 10 per cent and the increase of Value Added Tax (VAT) from five to 15 per cent by Saudi Authorities. According to him, the commission does not have control over these factors. “The projection is on the increase because as of 2019, the exchange rate for hajj was N306 but now it will be at N410 to a dollar. 2023: INEC budgets N239bn for poll materials, presidential run-off

The Independent National Electoral Commission will spend not less than N239.2bn on procuring voting materials and vehicles that will be used in the 2023 general election. This is according to the 2023 General Election Project Plan that was launched by INEC in Abuja on Thursday. The commission stated that N239.2bn, which constitutes 78.44 per cent of its N305bn budget, would be spent on 10 critical items which included ballot papers, operational vehicles, ballot boxes, allowances of ad hoc workers, printing of result sheets, logistics and procurement of accreditation devices. Also included in the N239.2bn budget is the N27.1bn set aside by the commission for possible run-off elections, including the one for the presidential poll.
