Wrong diagnosis: Graduate died from pneumonia – Autopsy

The controversy caused by the death of a graduate, Kolawole Idowu, in a Lagos hospital has deepened as the result of the autopsy conducted on his remains says he died from pneumonia. A death certificate issued to the family, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent, dated July 26, said the 29-year-old was killed by the lung infection. The mother of the victim, Mrs. Mopelola Osiyemi, said the report had raised more questions than answers on how her son died.

A father of five, Austin Segun, who tied his 13-year-old son to a burglar-proof for three days because a Church leader said the boy was a wizard, has been given an ultimatum to leave Eruemukohwarien community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. Mr. Segun was said to have been released on bail after he was arrested and detained at the Ughelli ‘A’ Division Police Station over the incident. The victim, Tobi Segun, who just finished his Primary 6 School Leaving Certificate exams, was rescued by a group of vigilante, who heard him whimpering at about 2a.m.

Badoo kills couple, two kids in Ikorodu fresh attack

After a few weeks of relative peace, the notorious ritual cult, Badoo, has rekindled panic in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State. The cult killed a couple – Mr. and Mrs. Adejare – two of their children, while the third kid was said to be in a coma at the Ikorodu General Hospital. The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday in Oke Ota community, Ibeshe. The children were reportedly aged between five and one. Two of them were identified as Siyin and Ajoke, all females. The assailants cut the window net of the family’s apartment to gain entry. They were said to have subsequently smashed the victims’ heads with a stone and left the area unnoticed.

Suspect kills Man who resists him from stealing fowls in Niger

The Niger State Police Command, on Saturday, said it had arrested 23-year-old Sunday Jamilu Abubakar of Babako village in Wushishi Local Government Area for murder. Abubakar was reportedly trailed and arrested by a team of policemen, said the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bala Elkana,at his office in Minna. According to Elkana, the suspect was arrested for killing one Ibrahim Gyagyah, who “prevented him from stealing two fowls that did not belong to him.”

Reps grumble as delivery of N6.1bn exotic cars stalls

Members of the House of Representatives are enraged after the lawmakers could not take delivery of exotic cars worth about N6.1bn as official vehicles for the 360-member House. Every four years, lawmakers get exotic official vehicles, better known as “utility or committee” cars, though the cars are more like the personal property of the legislators. Investigations by our correspondent on Sunday showed that after using personal cars to work or go on oversight duties for over two years, lawmakers had told the leadership of the House that they had had “enough of suffering.” About 223 of the 360 members of the house were “freshers” who first came to the National Assembly in 2015.

In an apparent mockery of Nigeria and her President Muhammadu Buhari, CNN, on its programme displayed at 4:59pm local time on Sunday said, “The head of state from which country has not set foot in his homeland in over two months?”

No space in mortuary as corpses brought by soldiers decomposing – UNIMAID

Staff of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) have said that the corpses of soldiers, NNPC staff and Civilian JTF members killed by Islamist Boko Haram terrorists during an ambush in Magumeri local government area of Borno state are currently decomposing at the hospital’s mortuary, unattended to, because there is no more space for the bodies. A senior official of the hospital who spoke on anonymity to The Cable, said staff are worried because the bodies are smelling and could lead to the outbreak of an epidemic.

Hajj: NDLEA warns intending pilgrims against smuggling of drugs, kolanuts

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Gombe has warned intending Muslims pilgrims against smuggling of hard drugs and kolanuts to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Mr Aliyu Adole, Commandant of the agency, gave the warning on Friday in an interview with newsmen in Gombe. Adole said that smuggling of drugs was prohibited and attracted death penalty in Saudi Arabia, while in Nigeria it is punishable with a minimum sentence of 10 years.

Breaking: Six students kidnapped in Epe released

Finally, the six Senior Secondary School Students of Lagos Model College,Igbonla, Epe, who were abducted on May 25, 2027, have regained freedom. They were rescued from Aboto creek, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo state , at about 3.30pm.  Their release as gathered was effected by the Lagos and Ondo states government and the Nigeria Police.

Former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been named an independent non-executive director at Standard Chartered Plc in the United Kingdom. Okonjo-Iweala Standard Chartered PLC is a British multinational banking and financial services company head-quartered in London and with presence in 70 countries.  According to a statement released by the company yesterday, her appointment is effective from November 1, 2017. She will earn £130,000 per annum for her expertise in financial and development financing.

Raid on Jonathan’s house: Disclose identities of informants, Reps tell NDLEA

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petition, yesterday, asked the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, to disclose the identifies of persons who tipped them for a raid on a property belonging to the former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan. The demand was made at a hearing which followed a petition recently submitted by Mrs. Jonathan, alleging harassment by officials of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, as well as the Nigeria Police.

The delegation was led by Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari, who also serves as chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum. He was joined by governors Dave Umahi (Ebonyi State), Umar Ganduje (Kano State), Kashim Shettima (Borno State), Samuel Ortom (Benue State), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom State) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo State).

Housekeeper, driver, arraigned for allegedly stealing Odegbami’s N150m jewellery

Rose Patrick, the 25-year-old housekeeper, and Mohammed Abdulazeez, the 26-year-old driver of spouse of an ex-international, have appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N150 million worth of jewellery. The accused were arraigned alongside Esther Pam, 28, a friend of the housekeeper. The trio are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing. They all denied the charges. Patrick Olusegun Odegbami According to the prosecutor, Insp. Peter Nwangwu, the trio committed the offences on Dec. 10, 2016 at the complainant’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Sex workers want govt to legalise prostitution

The Nigerian Sex Workers Association has called on the Federal Government to decriminalise prostitution, saying such would curb the spread of HIV. The association added that HIV infection had continued to increase because the government treated prostitution as a crime.  It stated that law enforcement agents, especially the police, consequently harassed sex workers and sometimes demand sex without using condoms.

Butcher bags 30 days jail sentence for stealing goat

A Minna magistrate’s court in Niger State, yesterday, sentenced a butcher, Abdulrahman Umaru, to 30 days imprisonment for stealing a goat. Umaru, 28, was earlier arraigned on a count charge of theft, contrary to Section 287 of the Penal Code.  In her ruling, Magistrate Amina Musa said the prosecution had proved its case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt and that she had also taken note of the guilty plea of the accused. Musa, therefore, convicted Umaru of the offence and sentenced him to 30 days in prison.

Grandma dumps daughter’s day-old baby in bush

A 36-year old grandmother, Mrs. Bosede Oyetunde, has been sentenced to one month’s imprisonment by a family court sitting in Oke Eda, Akure, Ondo State, for dumping a day-old baby boy, her grandson, in the bush. The incident happened in Omotoso town in the Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state. It was gathered that the woman committed the offence on July 13, 2017.

No killer anti-malaria drugs in circulation - NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) yesterday claimed that there are no “killer” anti-malarial medicines in Nigeria. Its Acting Director-General, Dr. Yetunde Oni, spoke at a news conference in Lagos yesterday. The briefing was prompted by the list of 42 banned anti-malaria medicines released by the Senate and said to be in circulation in hospitals and pharmacies and consumed by Nigerians. According to report, the medications have been banned in Europe but were still in the Nigerian market. Oni said: “We want to douse the tension and correct the misinformation on the social and mainstream media about the 42 anti-malarial medicines purportedly banned by the European Union but allegedly circulating in the country.

Sex worker arraigned for slashing colleague’s face with razor blade over hawking space

A 29-year-old sex worker, Beauty Tagbami, is facing trial at an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly cutting the face of her colleague with a razor blade. The accused, who resides at a hotel, appeared on a two-count charge of unlawful assault and assault causing bodily harm. Tagbami had entered a “not guilty” plea.

For the first time since he returned to London in May on medical vacation, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday spoke on his health. He said he was “making good progress” and would soon “return to my duties”. His message is contained in a letter to Guinean President Alpha Conde. In the letter, Buhari thanked Conde for last week’s nationwide prayers held in Guinea for his recovery and good health.

According to a Facebook user, Joy Ejiofor who revealed that the victim is her mother, post on July 20 that the Ogun state based pastor of Christ Covenant  Sabbath Mission ordered that the woman be beaten mercilessly on July 18, according to her, all this was because her mum stop to worship in the said church, leaving her bloodied in the process and landing her in a hospital.

Governors to council: Restore LAUTECH’s glory

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has urged members of the newly constituted Governing Council of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) at Ogbomoso to restore the institution’s fading glory. Salesman jailed 3 months for stealing perfume worth N108,000

A 23-year-old salesman, Martins Ovotu is to spend the next three months in the Kirikiri Prison, Lagos, for stealing eight bottles of perfume worth N108,000. An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court gave the judgment on Friday and did not give an option of fine. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ovotu had pleaded guilty and prayed for leniency.

41 year old man sleeping with 13-yr-old daughter blames devil

Sikiru Odejide  A 41-year-old man, Sikiru Odejide, who has been sleeping with his 13-year-old daughter (names withheld) since December 2016, has blamed the devil for his action. The Ogun State Police Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed that the arrest of the randy father was as a result of a complaint from the victim’s mother, who has been separated from the man.  Oyeyemi said the victim’s mother reported at Sango Police Station that her daughter came to her house at Ijeshatedo area of Lagos State to inform her that her father had been having carnal knowledge of her since December 2016 with a threat to kill her if she dares tells anybody about it.

APC sweeps Lagos council polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) appear to have won the council election held in 20 Local Government Areas and   37 Local Council Development Areas ( LCDAS) on Saturday. As at last night, the state Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) had not formally declared the results but results from various LGAs and LCDAs saw APC coasting to victory.

Ogun govt. inaugurates committee to curb prostitution

The Ogun Government has inaugurated a committee to look into the menace of prostitution among under-aged youths in the state. The committee members, drawn from the Ministries of Youth and Sports and Women Affairs, would sensitise, arrest and rehabilitate youths found engaging in such activities. Speaking at the inauguration of the committee on Monday in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Afolabi Afuape, lamented the rampant nature of open prostitution in the state. He said that sensitisation would start from all the four stadia across the state for a week, after which arrests could be made by security personnel.

NHIS boss’ suspension: We must quiz Health Minister, Reps insist

Professor Isaac Adewole The House of Representatives has insisted on interrogating the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, to ascertain reasons he suspended Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Professor Usman Yusuf, in the wake of an investigation. Chairman of House Committee on Health, Chike Okafor, who, weekend, asked the minister to appear before the committee on Thursday, also gave Wednesday as deadline for the 35 recalcitrant Health Management Organisations, HMOs, to make their financial records available to commissioned auditors for payment update from the NHIS.

Shettima orders recruitment of 300 graduates

Borno Governor, Kashim Shettima has directed the State Civil Service Commission to recrui 300 unemployed graduates. They are to be recruited from among graduates of various fields from the 27 local government areas of the state. Governor Shettima gave the directive while presenting certificates to 10 youths sponsored by the State government for one year course on electricity generation, distribution and transmission at the National Power Training Institute.

Dalori Bombing Updates: NEMA says three dead, 17 injured

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the death of three persons in a suicide bomb attack at the Dalori Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Maiduguri on Sunday night. The NEMA North-East Zonal Information Officer, Mr Abdulkadir Ibrahim, confirmed this in a statement on Monday, adding that 17 other persons were injured during the incident.

Kidnapped Lagos schoolboys will return – Osinbajo assures

Acting President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has urged parents and guardians of the kidnapped Lagos School boys not to lose hope on the return of their wards. This is even as he assured that the Federal Government in collaboration with state authorities are working tirelessly to ensure their safe return. On May 25, six secondary school boys of the school were abducted by unknown gunmen, this is even as four students and six staff of the same school were also kidnapped in October 2016.

Bodies of 3 missing kids found in neighbour’s car

The bodies of three of the four children who had gone missing since Wednesday have been found in a car.  The fourth child who was also found in the car however survived at the time of the discovery and is receiving treatment at 44 Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna. The survivor and the bodies of the three dead children were found at Surajo Road in Tudun Wada area of Kaduna on Saturday near their parents’ house in a car belonging to a neighbor. The car had not been used for a long while.
