FIFA's corruption; seven officials arrested in £100million FBI bribery as police investigate Russia and Qatar World Cup bids

Swiss police today raided the five-star Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich, Switzerland, making at least seven arrests, including FIFA vice president Jeffrey Webb and senior figures Eugenio Figueredo, Jose Maria Marin and Eduardo Li.

They were led away by police through the side exit of the hotel, with many using bedsheets to shield themselves from the public eye.

They all now face extradition to the United States. The Swiss authorities allege the arrested men have taken more than £65million ($100million) in 'bribes and kick-backs' over 25 years in return for FIFA sponsorship deals. The timing of the arrests was explosive - coming just two days before the FIFA presidential election, which has already been dogged by controversy and claims of corruption.

Sepp Blatter, who is widely expected to win a fifth term at the helm of the governing body of world football, was not among the men arrested. Switzerland's Office of the Attorney General later said it was investigating 'persons unknown on suspicion of criminal mismanagement and of money-laundering' in connection with FIFA's decision to award the 2018 and 2022 tournaments to Russia and Qatar respectively.
