Lagos State Govt to probes teacher who allegedly ‘brutalised 2-year-old pupil who couldn’t recite the Alphabet’

The Lagos state government says it has commenced investigation into the case of a two-year-old pupil allegedly brutalised by her teacher. On Friday, Chima, an uncle to the pupil, had taken to Twitter to narrate how the yet-to-be-identified teacher allegedly flogged the young girl “because she could not recite the English alphabet.” In the post, Chima said his niece is a pupil of Unic Vilos, a Lagos-based school. The fashion designer claimed when his sister — who is the mother of the pupil — confronted the teacher, she was told that her daughter was not the only one given such treatment. According to him, the teacher told his sister that other pupils were also given 24 strokes of cane each. The fashionista added that the owner of the school accused his sister of trying to destroy the school’s reputation when she reported the incident. “This is my two-year-old niece that was flogged mercilessly because she couldn’t recite the English alphabet,” he wrote in the post accompanied by a photo of his niece. “When my sister, the mother confronted the teacher, she boasted that it wasn’t only the girl that was flogged but others were also flogged 24 strokes each (children of below 3 years o). And that she will flog them that this one is just testing. “My sister also told me that one of her child came back the other day bleeding from the nose. When she asked her, the girl said she was flogged on the head, she confronted the school and they denied it. This one they can’t deny because the marks of the flogging is there. “The owner of the school, according to my sister accused her of wanting to bring down her school when she reported to her.” The incident has attracted a wave of criticism on the micro-blogging platform, with several Nigerians condemning the teacher’s action. Responding to the tweet, Jubril Gawat, special assistant on new media to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos governor, said the matter is already under probe. According to him, the issue is being investigated by a joint team consisting the ministries of education, justice as well as youth and social development. “Update: A multi MDA team consisting of Ministry of Education (office of quality assurance), ministry of justice (@DSVRT) and ministry of youth and social development are already on the matter,” he wrote.
