Family, friends and associates lined with convoy of vehicles heading   to Magodo — the late musician’s place of residence — as the hearse bearing his remains was driven out of the lush environment where the TOS Funeral Home is. Osun 2018: Again, 2 party members drag Adeleke to court over primary

Two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in Osun state have filed a suit at an Osogbo High Court challenging the candidacy of Sen. Ademola Adeleke as the party’s flag bearer in the Sept. 22 governorship election. The suit filed on Monday by Mr. Oyetunji Suredi and Mr. Olagboye Adedamola is coming on the heels of Justice David Oladimeji’s judgment which dismissed a similar suit against Adeleke. The suit dismissed by Oladimeji was filed by Rasheed Olabayo and Oluwaseun Idowu. In the fresh suit, the plaintiffs are seeking an interlocutory injunction restraining Adeleke from parading himself as the candidate of the Osun PDP over alleged forged school certificate. They are also asking the court to make an order to restrain the state’s party Chairman, Mr. Soji Adagunodo, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from further recognising the defendant as the candidate of the party.

Release remanded 112 Imo women protesters now- SERAP, Nigerians demand

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, including many Nigerians have demanded the unconditional release of 112 pro-Biafra Imo women who were arrested, detained and remanded in Owerri prison for participating in a peaceful protest to demand the whereabouts of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu. The women were remanded in jail till September 3 by Magistrate S.K Durumba for embarking on a peaceful protest. It was also gathered that one of the women (a pregnant woman) who broke down in the court as a result of the alleged beaten earlier received from the police during the peaceful protest was said to have bled profusely before she was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, (SERAP) has sent an open letter to Senator Abiola Ajimobi, Governor, Oyo State requesting him to “immediately halt all further eviction and demolition of Fresh FM building and to show full respect for the safety and dignity of residents and owner of Fresh FM. We also urge you to immediately begin repairs of the Fresh FM building and to adequately compensate the radio station and its owner and publicly guarantee non-repetition. The organization urged Ajimobi to “ensure full and effective respect for the rights to freedom of expression and media freedom in Oyo State. We request that you take this step within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter, failing which SERAP will take national and international legal actions to compel your government to act in the public interest and the overall interest of the rule of law.” In the letter 21 August 2018 and signed by SERAP deputy director Timothy Adewale the organization said,

Suspected killer of Ekiti monarch arrested

Ekiti State Police Command has arrested the alleged killer of the traditional ruler of Odo-Oro in Ikole Local Government Area, Oba Gbadebo Ogunsakin. Recall that the monarch was killed on Monday after holding a council meeting with his chiefs. The Police had launched a manhunt for the suspect after he stabbed the traditional ruler to death. The king was killed by the suspect, who was alleged to be mentally unstable, shortly after chairing a meeting with his chiefs, where matters of community development were said to have been discussed. The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, said yesterday, that the culprit had been apprehended.

Full salary: Don’t be deceived with July payment — Kehinde tells Osun workers

The standard bearer of the All Grassroots Alliance, AGA, Barr. Femi Kehinde has advised public workers in the state not to be carried away by what he termed as the plot to hoodwink them into getting their votes through the full payment of their July salaries. His assertion followed the payment of full salary for July to all categories of workers, including civil servants in local government councils. The move was a departure from the previous graduated system where workers were paid fractions of their salaries. Reacting to the development, Kehinde contended that the “the full payment of July salary to workers is an expired style of the Governor Rauf Aregbesola administration. A man suspected to be mentally challenged man has reportedly killed a native doctor in Oba Aguleri in the Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State. Southern City News gathered that the incident triggered protest in the area leading to destruction of properties while business activities were grounded. A source, who pleaded anonymity for fear of attack, told Southern City News that trouble began when the herbalist, whose name could not be ascertained as of press time, tied a goat that he bought for sacrifice to a tree and went into the market to pick other items, but did not see the goat when he returned. A 51-year-old Senior Lecturer in the Department of Catering and Hotel Management, Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, Andrew Ogbuja, has been nabbed and dragged to court for allegedly raping his 13 years old wife's niece. Mr. Ogbuja’s teenage son, Victor, was also alleged to have been part of the sexual molestation of the victim, but is now at large. Andrew Ogbuja, who was arraigned before a Makurdi Upper Area Court on Monday, was arrested last Friday after the victim’s family raised the alarm. When the case came up, the accused pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy, asking to be granted bail so he can go back home to have the matter resolved amicably, considering his status, especially as he was caught in the act. The accused, who spoke through his counsel, David Ojile, equally promised to take full responsibility for the treatment of the victim, saying it was a family matter. Certificate scandal: Court dismisses case against Adeleke

A case against the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Ademola Adeleke for not allegedly possessing secondary school certificate on Tuesday was dismissed by an Osun State High Court in Osogbo. The presiding judge, Justice David Oladimeji, dismissed the suit filed by two PDP’s delegates, Rasheed Olabayo and Oluwaseun Idowu, asking the court to restrain the PDP from presenting Adeleke to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as candidate of the party for the September 22 Osun governorship poll. The plaintiffs, who are members of PDP in Osun had claimed that Senator Adeleke did not possess Certificate and urged the court to restrain INEC from accepting Adeleke from PDP as its candidate on the basis that the Senator was not qualified, quoting Section 177 (d) of the 1999 Constitution.

The police say they were not involved in the blockade of the national assembly. On Tuesday, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) had prevented lawmakers from entering into the national assembly. The lawmakers were later allowed to enter the assembly after a protest. The operatives left after Acting President Yemi Osinbajo fired Lawal Daura, director-general of the DSS – after seven hours of laying siege. In a statement, Jimoh Moshood, force public relations officer, said Nigerians should disregard insinuations that police officers were involved in the blockade.

OYO: 50 APC governorship aspirants jostle for ticket

About 50 governorship aspirants within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Oyo State have shown interest in vying for the exalted office in the 2019 elections. This was disclosed, yesterday, by the party’s state Chairman, Chief Akin Oke at the party Secretariat at Oke-Ado during the declaration of interest by one of the contestants, Prof Soji Adejumo. The party chairman said out of the 50 governorship aspirants, only 10 of them have made their interest known to the party. In his remarks,   Adejumo said if he becomes the governor, no external farmer will bring in herds into the state without a licence   approved by the law.

Secondus asks UK to expel Buhari

Uche Secondus, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, has asked the United Kingdom to expel President Muhammadu Buhari from London where he is currently. Buhari embarked on a 10-day trip to the UK on Friday.   Reacting to the siege laid to the national assembly on Tuesday by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Secondus said the president left the country to enable the “nefarious activities out against democracy be executed in his absence”.

Man drops dead at bus stop

The body of a middle-aged man was yesterday found at Orile-Iganmu Bus stop in Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that he was passing by when he suddenly slumped and died. Mr Yinus Olayiwola, a trader close to the scene, said the deceased was seen shivering on the spot at about 6:30 a.m.

A 52-year-old man, Pius Miller, and his son, Israel, 17, were yesterday arraigned at an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun State for allegedly stealing a telecommunications cable. It was valued at N11, 700. Prosecutor Sunday Osanyintuyi told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 30 at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital complex, Ile-Ife. He alleged that the accused conspired with intent to commit felony to wit: stealing telecommunications cable, property of the hospital.

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 45-year-old woman, Hadijat Kabiru, for allegedly faking her own kidnap to defraud her 55-year-old husband, Muraino Kabiru. Also arrested were two suspected accomplices, Ahmed Kudus and Hadijat Rufai. Muraino received a call from the suspected kidnappers on August 2, 2018, that his wife, Hadijat, and 18-year-old daughter, Hamidat, had been kidnapped on their way to a psychiatric hospital in the Oshodi area of Lagos State. It was also learnt that the alleged kidnappers had demanded N15m for the release of the victims before Muraino reported the matter to police. While briefing the press on Monday, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said the Anti-Kidnapping Squad rescued the victims and arrested the suspects.

Husband of the deceased is said to be based abroad, but built a house for his family at Okhokhugbo community in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, where the late wife and children lived. Hajj: Saudi Arabia bans camels from entering Mecca

Saudi Arabia said Thursday it banned five vehicles loaded with camels from entering Mecca in a bid to protect pilgrims from contagious diseases. Omar Al Faqih, director of the branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in Mecca, said his office was implementing the decision of the Health Ministry, the official Saudi Press Agency reported. The Health Ministry also bans slaughtering camels in Mecca as a precautionary measure to protect the health of pilgrims visiting the holy Islamic city from all over the world. Camels have been proven to be the source of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) Coronavirus that has killed hundreds of people in Saudi Arabia alone since the first diagnosed case in 2012.

Court orders Airline to pay Falae’s widow N246 million compensation

Reprieve came the way of widow of Deji Falae, son of Chief Olu Falae, who died in the ill-fated Associated Airline crash in Lagos on October 3, 2013, as a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Wednesday granted all her claims. In her judgment that lasted for about two hours, 19 minutes the presiding judge, Justice Hadizat Shagari said “from the evidence of the principal witness, Ese Falae, the widow, the fact of the case speak for itself, the first defendant, Associated Airline and the second defendant, Nigeria Civil Aviation Agency cannot exonerate themselves from the circumstances surrounding the crash of the Aircraft that claimed the life of Deji Falae. In my view, the Plaintiffs succeed in their claims against the defendants, judgement is hereby entered in their favour as per their claims. Nigeria Civil Aviation Agency is the second defendant in this suit.

SERAP gives NYSC 7 days to provide documents on Adeosun’s Certificate

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on Thursday, gave National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) seven days to provide documents on Finance Minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun’s Discharge Certificate. A statement signed by the group’s Deputy Director, Mr Timothy Adewale, released in Abuja, said that SERAP, leveraging Freedom of Information Act, had forwarded a request, asking Director-General NYSC, Brig-Gen. Sule Kazaure, to release the documents. Adewale said that the request urged Kazaure to urgently provide information on specific details and documents on the Exemption Certificate granted to the minister. Propose compulsory annual development levy N500 for primary school pupils and N1, 000 for secondary school students across the country

The federal government has argued for the payment of compulsory levy by students in primary and secondary schools across the country.  The levy was debated today at the 63rd ministerial session of the National Council Education, but it was not included in the communiqué from the session. The compulsory annual development levy if approved would have been 500 naira for primary school pupils and one thousand naira for secondary school students across the country.

Zimbabwe’s ruling party wins majority in parliament, opposition questions poll

The presidential candidate for Zimbabwe’s main opposition accused the ruling ZANU-PF of trying to steal the general election on Wednesday after official figures gave President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s party a majority in parliament. Nelson Chamisa, 40, and the 75-year-old Mnangagwa were the main contenders in Monday’s vote, the first since Robert Mugabe was forced to resign after a de facto coup in November after nearly 40 years in power. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s results showed Mnangagwa’s ZANU-PF cruising to a big majority after picking up 109 seats against 41 for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Another 58 seats are yet to be declared. Results of the presidential poll are expected by Saturday.

Teen gets 75 years for joining in fatal beating of man accused of raping his mother

A Florida teen has been sentenced to 75 years in prison for helping his older brothers beat a man to death. Nathan Johnson was a 16-year old when helped his older brothers beat a man, who was accused of raping their mother. The Ledger reports Nathan Johnson was 16 when 31-year-old Robert Banks was lured to his home in Lakeland after their mother, who was dating Banks, accused him of raping her. Prosecutors said Johnson and his older brothers and their friend assaulted him with a flashlight, then set his body on fire in the woods in January 2016.

Thieves snatch Swedish royal jewels in daylight heist

Two crowns and an orb dating back to the early 1600s stolen from church in Strangnas, west of Stockholm. Robbers who nabbed two 17th century royal crowns and an orb from a Swedish cathedral remained at large on Wednesday, a day after fleeing their daring midday heist by motorboat. The thieves, who have not been identified, and the jewels are being sought internationally via Interpol, Swedish police spokesman Stefan Dangardt said, noting the objects were a "national treasure" and would likely be "very difficult to sell". The 1611 gold burial crowns belonging to King Karl IX and his wife Queen Christina were originally interred with the couple but were later exhumed and had been on display in a locked cabinet in the Strangnas Cathedral, located 100 kilometers (60 miles) west of Stockholm. "We have as yet no value of the stolen goods, except that it is a national treasure," Dangardt told AFP.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday elected Chairman of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the just concluded ECOWAS Summit in Lome, Togo. His media aide Bashir Ahmad made this knwon on his Twitter handle he said “President Muhammadu Buhari has been elected the new Chairman of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the just concluded ECOWAS Summit in Lome, Togo’ Also the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Malam Garba Shehu in a statement said that President Buhari’s election was one of the highpoints of the 53rd Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS which held in the Togolese capital. Female lawmakers exchange blows over man

Two female nominated members of a Kenyan county assembly exchanged blows at the cafeteria on Tuesday, over a disagreement allegedly involving a man. SDE reports that the two ladies have been romantically linked to the same man and got to know about it, leading to the quarrel between them. One of their colleagues told SDE, that tempers flared when one of the ladies who is said to be the daughter of a former MP stormed the cafeteria to beat her nominated colleague- who was shouting “ Huyu ni wazimu (This one is crazy! She needs help! Please help her seek help).
