The official confirmation that the Nigerian economy is in recession by the Federal Government on August 31, appears to have further stimulated more suicide cases across the nation. In the last six months, seven out of the 36 states of the federation sampled, have recorded over 62 cases of suicides according to statistics from the various police commands. Ogun and Lagos states have the highest figures of 25 and 12 respectively.  

Yet to be identified gunmen on Thursday murdered a family of six in the Igbogbo Community in Ikorodu, Lagos, The Sun reports. The victims were shot inside their residence in a church premises one after another by the assassins. The victims were identified as Celestine Nwokoye, a taxi driver at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, his wife, his two sons and two daughters.

A pastor with a Pentecostal ministry, Chinedu Rockson, has accused the management of Ilogbo Central Hospital in the Ajangbadi area of Lagos State of removing his wife’s womb and damaging her bladder during childbirth. Chinedu said the hospital also detained his wife over the payment of N50,000, adding that efforts to clear the bill had been frustrated by the hospital.

The Borno State Commissioner for Environment, Waziri Imam, is dead. Reports said he died on Wednesday at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital after a brief illness. Civil servants who have retired from the federal public service have demanded an upward review of the pension of civil servants nationwide in line with the provisions of the constitution. The retirees under the aegis of Association of Federal Public Service Retirees, said the constitution provided that pensions should be reviewed every five years or anytime salaries of workers’ salaries were reviewed.

The Federal House of Representatives has suspended its chairman of the Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, for 180 legislative days, banning him from holding positions of authority for the rest of the eighth Assembly. Abdulmumin Jibrin Details later.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the ongoing Edo State governorship election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has expressed concerns about the presence of governors Akinwunmi Ambode and Nasir el-Rufai of Lagos and Kaduna states respectively, in the state. Ize-Iyamu, who claimed that both governors were in the state, said their intentions could not be genuine.

Nigerian actor, Kalu Ikeagwu was arrested on Monday at his residence by Policemen over an armed robbery incident that happened in Abuja. I do not like to delve into matters touching and concerning the APC because I am not a member. However what is happening in the ruling party today transcends partisan politics and should be a concern to us all. At the very least we can learn some very hard lessons from it. The truth is that the behaviour of Chief John Odige-Oyegun towards the man that single-handedly made him the National Chairman of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is reprehensible. Teachers of the King’s College (KC), Lagos have embarked of indefinite strike over alleged non-payment of salary by the school authorities. According to a notice pasted on the school gate, the angry teachers vowed to remain at home until their outstanding salaries were paid. It read: “Strike ongoing. Academic activities grounded in King’s College; five months salaries unpaid. Staff are dying.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, accused former governors of contributing to the economic woes afflicting the nation by opposing his government’s efforts to save for the rainy day when the price of oil was higher. Obasanjo, who spoke at the 2016 World Pension Summit in Abuja, lamented that many of the former state executives frustrated his genuine attempt to save a substantial portion of the country’s resources when there was excess oil revenue. Obasanjo said at the event attended by global pension players and top government officials: “I remember when I was in government and I told, particularly, the governors, ‘please let us save for the rainy days.’ They said no.

Forest department officials in India have promised strict action after a python attacked a man when a group was trying to click a photo with the snake. The incident took place on Friday after forest department officials removed the python from the premises of a school in northwestern Rajasthan State.

The Nigerian Senate Tuesday rejected the calls for the sale of the country’s national assets. On its social media handle, the Senate said it “rejected prayer 3 of the recommendations of the Ad Hoc Committee which sought for the sale of National Assets to shore up Foreign Reserve”. The call for the removal of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, by the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has divided the APC’s National Working Committee. A 40-year-old man, Olarewaju Osasonna, on Tuesday told an Ikole Customary Court, Ekiti, that he could no longer cope with the foul smell from his wife, Kafayat, due to her dirty ways. He said, “My wife is very dirty to the extent of packing used baby napkins with faeces for days in the house without washing them and this made everywhere in the house to smell. “Again she doesn’t know how to cook food, always cooking tasteless meals and will never take to correction on her dirty habit.

Nigeria has the people and the resources to surmount her economic problems, President Muhammadu Buhari has assured. Receiving President of the African Development Bank (ADB), Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, at State House, Abuja, on Monday, President Buhari said: “God has given us people and resources. It will take hard work on our part, but we will make it. We will get out of our problems. We are determined to produce what we eat, and stop importation. We will also chase those who stole, and get them to refund.”

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) says he has no apology to tender to former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Prof. Charles Soludo over $7 billion illegal loan granted to 14 commercial banks in the country in 2006. Falana has asked the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, to investigate the fund granted to the banks illegally by Soludo as he claimed that the money was criminally diverted.

An 18-year-old girl, identified as Ana Ballesteros has been reportedly buried alive by her relatives in Monteria, Colombia, to cure the crippling back pains she has been experiencing after she was recently struck by lightning on her way to school. The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved $1 billion loan towards meeting the deficits in Nigeria’s 2016 Budget, believed to partly responsible for the country’s economic crisis. The loan is provided at 1.2 percent interest rate. A traditional ruler in Idanre Local Government in Ondo State, Oba Olusegun Akinbola, has urged fellow monarchs to strive to uphold cultural values and tradition to guard against Western influence. The operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a woman who allegedly abused her housemaid by inflicted a severe injury on her wrist with a saw. The incident was said to have happened on Sunday in the Meiran Alagbado area of Lagos state after neighbours heard the shout of the girl in the woman’s apartment. The Ogun Police Command says it will prosecute a Pentecostal pastor, Wale Fagbere, who allegedly invaded a traditional shrine in Ketu area of Ayetoro in Ogun. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta on Monday that the cleric would be charged for malicious damage and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

A Lokoja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded an applicant, Samuel Anyaogu, 29, in prison for allegedly killing his two daughters. He allegedly dumped the bodies of the two kids, whom he had from a concubine in a stream. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Levi Animoku, who gave the order, described the crime as horrifying.

The Dangote Industries Limited 17 billion-dollar refinery project will create over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs by the first quarter of 2019, the Chief Operating Officer, Mr Olakunle Alake, has said. Alake made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday, adding that the refinery, petrochemicals and fertiliser plants were in one location.

Saudi authorities on Monday executed an Ethiopian housemaid convicted of killing the child of her employer more than three years ago, the Interior Ministry said. The ministry noted in a statement that the execution was carried out after the death sentence was endorsed by the king. Meanwhile the convict had confessed having knifed to death the six-year-old girl in June 2013, allegedly in retaliation for her family’s ill-treatment.

Member representing Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakubu, has suggested that consumption of locally made products would boost economic growth of the nation in the face of its financial downturn. Dr Titus Okunronmu, a former Director in the Budgetary Department, Central Bank of Nigeria, has said selling the country’s assets to boost the economy will further restrict income. Okunronmu told the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota, Ogun State, that rather than restrict income, the government should redistribute income through untapped resources.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Commandant in Yobe State, Dr. Muhammed Fari, on Monday said a 40-year-old deaf and dumb man, Shaaibu Danladi, raped a six-month-old baby in Potiskum. The NSCDC boss, who decried the increasing cases of rape, indecency and breach of trust in the state, said medical report indicated that the baby sustained tear in her vagina down to her anus.

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, has demanded the removal of the party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, over what he called the latter’s anti-democratic handling of the party affairs. Organised Labour, weekend, advised the Federal Government to jettison planned sale of national assets, to avoid mass revolt and civil unrest that will be worse than the anti-SAP riots of 1989. The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC; Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC; the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG; and Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, in one accord, told government that it would be playing with fire should it go ahead to sell the assets.

Lagos State Emergency Agency, LASEMA, on Sunday said it received a distress alert, early morning, through the toll free emergency number of Lagos State 767/112 regarding a fallen truck at Ikorodu. LASEMA Emergency Response Team’s preliminary report revealed that a speeding Mack Truck with registration number AGL 664 XG laden with 33,000 litre PMS belonging to Forte Oil, while trying to turn at the roundabout, fell on a Hyundai Saloon Car with registration number KJA 421 AH.
