The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned the public of a malicious app called ”Fast Cleaner” — which steals users’ banking app login credentials on Android devices. Ikechukwu Adinde, NCC director of public affairs, issued the warning in a statement posted on the commission’s website on Saturday. Adinde said the NCC Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) discovered the Fast Cleaner app which claims to be a phone booster and battery saver tool but actually contains a malware named ‘Xenomorph’. He said the application’s main operation is to steal credentials, combined with the use of SMS and notification interception to log-in and use potential two-factor authentication tokens.

A social media user, Godwin Okpala has explained why about 20 persons in the Ebenebe community of Awka North Local Government Area, Anambra State, were killed at the funeral of a suspected cultist. Persons suspected to be members of a rival cult group had invaded the burial venue of Ozor Chibuike Chukwuka, a 34-year-old cultist, dispersing mourners, while killing about 20 persons. Okpala, who claims to hail from the same community as Chukwuka, in a social media post said the notorious cultist was killed on 30th December 2021 at Amansea. He said the rival cult which killed Ozor had warned his family members not to organize a befitting burial for him as he was not worthy of it, instead he should be buried as a nobody. The Consulate-General of Nigeria in New York has announced that the Consulate will start the issuance of passports with 10-year validity to its nationals. The Consul-General, Ambassador Lot Egopija, who disclosed this at a virtual 4th Town Hall for Nigerian nationals within the New York jurisdiction, said the headquarters (Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs) had communicated the development to the Consulate. “Last month (January) we were informed that 10 years passport will be brought to New York. “We have been asked to prepare for the take-off to issue 10 years passport. We know to qualify for the 10 years passport, that applicant must have a National Identify Number,’’ he said. Egopija, however, urged Nigerians who have not enrolled for NIN to do so, noting that information was displayed at the Consulate as that would be a prerequisite for getting the passport. He said that the Nigerian Government had already designated some vendors to register Nigerians in diaspora for NIN.

Ukraine said Sunday it would hold peace talks with Russia at its border with Belarus – near the Chernobyl exclusion zone – after a call between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko. “The politicians agreed that the Ukrainian delegation would meet the Russian one without preconditions at the Ukraine-Belarus border, near the Pripyat River,” Zelensky’s office said. Zelensky has said he will not hold talks with Russia on the territory of Belarus, where some Russian troops were stationed before invading on Ukraine’s northern border.

The Federal Government has appealed to the public, particularly Lagos State residents to always verify all lands with state and Federal Government agencies before purchase, in order not to fall victim to land grabbers. The apex government also appealed to the media to embark on mass awareness campaign against land grabbers in Lagos State. The Federal Controller of Housing in Lagos State, Mrs Margaret Adejobi, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday. Adejobi said that the land grabbers deliberately encroached and sold-off gazetted Federal Government lands in Lagos state.

Some states are set to face fresh economic challenges as the Federal Allocation has dropped to a four-year low allocations. In January, the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee shared the sum of N574.66bn to the Federal Government, states and local government councils. The amount shared in January is lower than the N699.82bn disbursed in December 2021. This fall in FAAC allocations follows the Federal Government’s announcement of its plans to deduct N950bn for the payment of fuel subsidy from allocations due to states in 2022. Details of the allocations for January are contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a virtual meeting of the FAAC for February 2022 released on Thursday night.

However a spokesman said she expects to continue light duties at Windsor this week. A palace source said a number of cases have been diagnosed in the Windsor Castle team. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has urged the 36 state governors across the country to immediately redirect public funds used to service ‘underserving benefits’ in paying counterpart funds that would allow poor children enjoy access to quality basic education in their respective state. The group listed the ‘underserving benefits’ to include public funds budgeted to pay ex-governors undeserved pensions and other retirement benefits, and for security votes. SERAP made the call in a statement on Sunday titled, ‘N51bn UBEC funds: Pay counterpart funds or face legal action, SERAP tells 36 governors’, and signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare. According to Oluwadare, several of the 36 states have reportedly failed to pay the counterpart funds to access over N51bn matching grants earmarked by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for basic education in the country, as at July 2019. Wilfred Machage, Kenya’s high commissioner to Nigeria, has died at the age of 65. Machage reportedly collapsed in his Abuja home on Saturday, after which he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The deceased high commissioner’s wife was said to have been with him when he collapsed. Kenya’s ministry of foreign affairs has released a statement announcing Machage’s demise.

A 38 year old man Akinyemi Thomas was on the 17th of February 2022 arrested by men of Ogun state police command for impersonating a police officer. The suspect was arrested while policemen attached to Sagamu divisional headquarters were on routine patrol of their area with the DPO, CSP Godwin Idehai and they sighted the suspect in full police camouflage uniform at under the bridge along Lagos Ibadan expressway. Rotimi Adeleye, commanding officer, zone 12, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has warned officials against chasing erring motorists. The Lagos state government says it has commenced investigation into the case of a two-year-old pupil allegedly brutalised by her teacher. On Friday, Chima, an uncle to the pupil, had taken to Twitter to narrate how the yet-to-be-identified teacher allegedly flogged the young girl “because she could not recite the English alphabet.” In the post, Chima said his niece is a pupil of Unic Vilos, a Lagos-based school. Emeka Nwogbo, a teacher at Arise and Shine Nursery and Primary School in Asaba, Delta state, has been arrested over the death of his 19-month-old pupil. Nwogbo was said to have flogged the pupil on Monday, leaving several marks of the cane on his body. The teacher is said to be a son to the proprietress of the private school. Days after the incident, the pupil who is the only child of his mother took ill and was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Asaba where he eventually died on Saturday February 12 morning.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested Vyapak Nutal, an Indian businessman, for allegedly smuggling 134,700 bottles of codeine syrup into the country. In a statement on Sunday, Femi Babafemi, NDLEA spokesman, said the suspect allegedly loaded trucks with the syrup in Benin Republic. He was said to have come in through the border of Niger Republic and arrived Sokoto in Nigeria. “Settled in a hotel in Sokoto state, credible intelligence reveals that Nutal began to look for buyers for the controlled drug,” the statement reads.

Men of Ogun State Police Command in the early hours of yesterday arrested 43-year-old Kehinde Oladimeji and his wife, Adejumoke Raji, for allegedly being in possession of fresh human parts. The couple, according to a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, are residents of No.72 MKO Abiola Way, Leme, Abeokuta. Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, Sunday, expressed worry over ritual killings in the country perpetrated mostly by young people to get rich under drug influence and called for special funds meant for National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, to fight the menace. This was contained in a statement signed by Executive Director, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, Adopt A Goal for Development Initiative, AAGDI, and endorsed by Youth and Students Advocates for Development Initiative, YSAD, where they pointed out that the rising incidents of ritual killings and crimes committed by young persons are appalling. According to the statement, drugs dealers, addicts, and casual users are the root cause of the alarming rise in ritual killings, insurgency, crimes, and violent robberies as they call for urgent intervention.

The civil rights and Non-governmental organisation, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, has sued The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for failure to publish the agreement between the Federal Government and Twitter.
