The Nigerian Communications Commission has suspended its directive to mobile network operators to increase the price of data. According to the NCC, the decision is as a result of the outrage that followed the announcement of the planned price hike.

Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, on Wednesday boasted that more senators from the country’s main opposition party will defect to it. The Peoples Democratic Party had lost all the three Senators representing Ondo State at the upper chamber of National Assembly to APC, with Mr. Yele Omogunwa (Ondo South) the latest to defect.

Former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, on Monday returned N30m to EFCC. This brings the total amount of money he has returned to N134m. A 46-year-old teacher, Adenekan Adegboyega, has been arrested by the police in Lagos State for allegedly defiling a two-year-old girl. The supervising teacher in one of the popular and privately–run schools in Lagos State was alleged to have defiled the little girl under the guise of teaching her sex education.

The family of Alhaji Atiku Olugbon of Ote, in the Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, and the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olusola Amore, to investigate the shooting of their son, Bukola Olugbon, by a policeman, Abubakar Ahmed. A relative of the victim, Mr. Ibrahim Olugbon, said, “The police must investigate and punish the culprit to serve as a deterrent to others.”

Executive Vice-Chairman, Nigeria Communications Commission, Prof. Umar Dambatta   The Senate on Wednesday asked the Nigerian Communications Commission to immediately stop planned data tariff hike. The Senate said before any such hike could be announced all parties should be consulted.

The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) on Wednesday said the directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for data tariff increase was insensitive. NATCOMS President, Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo said in a statement in Lagos, that the service providers had started notifying their subscribers of the increase in the tariff of data usage effective from Dec. 1.

The senator representing Ondo South Senatorial district, Yela Omogunwa has defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC. In a letter which was read by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on the floor of the Senate, Omofunwa thank members of his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, while explaining that the defection would enable him work with the newly-elected governor of Ondo State, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Petroleum Products Prices Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to review the current price template for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with a view to reducing the price to N70. This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Abubaker Fulata titled “Urgent Need to Review the Petroleum Price Template”.  Moving the motion, Fulata expressed dismay over the circulating rumour of a possible hike in the price of petrol in the country. Although the rumour was denied by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Fulata said it was coming at a time when the nation is going through difficult times.

A woman, Aderonke Ojediran, on Monday, approached a Grade C Customary Court, Agodi-Ibadan in Oyo State, to seek for dissolution of her five-year-old marriage with Oyeleke Ojediran, for allegedly comparing her with goats. Ojediran also complained that she was seeking for divorce because Oyeleke had refused to pay her bride pride and had been threatening her life. Another reason for the divorce, the plaintiff said, was the lack of care for the only child of the union. She told the court that “ I packed out of my husband’s residence in 2013 when I could no longer cope with the bad characters of my husband.”

The Ekiti State governor-elect Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) on Sunday delivered his acceptance speech in his Owo home after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him the winner of the Saturday’s governorship election in the state. The All Progressives Congress candidate, Akeredolu, polled a total number of 244, 842 votes to beat runners up, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) of the Peoples Democratic Party, who had 146,784. The Alliance for Democracy candidate, Chief Olusola Oke came third with 107,124 votes.

Emir of Kano and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, yesterday at the 42nd convocation lecture of the University of Benin, told the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola that Nigerians are waiting for him for solutions in the power sectors. The New Odua People’s Congress (New OPC), Ondo State Chapter has warned the ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Comission, INEC, and the Federal Government against rigging today’s governorship election in the state. The group raised concerns over alleged influx of some strangers into the state. A statement signed by Kunle Famuyiwa, leader of the groupn said his men would not watch the state being robbed by strangers.

A cross-section of economists, including university dons from across the country have expressed their displeasure with President Muhammadu Buhari’s proposal to borrow $29.9bn to get Nigeria out of recession, saying it would mortgage the future of coming generations. Some of the economists also noted that it was risky for the country to take such a loan as there was no national plan for it. Buhari had sent a request to the Senate for the approval of external borrowing to the tune of $29.9bn, but the lawmakers voted against the loan request due to technical issues.

Bread consumers in Hadejia, Jigawa, have expressed concern over persistent hike in prices, amid increasing demand for the commodity. The prices of bread had gone up by about 50 per cent in the area. A medium loaf of bread is sold at N270 as against N200 before, while a small loaf costs N120, as against N70. A cross section of the residents described the trend as worrisome. Alhaji Muntari Isa said that the high cost of bread was a source of concern to most families. Isa said that he spend about N600 on bread daily, noting that the commodity was beyond the reach of ordinary man.

Mr Afolabi Olaposi, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owo, Ondo State, was killed by unknown gunmen on Thursday night in Owo. The Party said in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Abayomi Adesanya, on Friday in Akure that Olaposi was shot dead on his way home after attending a meeting of the party in preparation for the governorship election.

Mr Tope Babayemi, Interim Chairman of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Lagos chapter on Friday described the alleged theft of nine iPhones by Oluwaseun Olasunkanmi as shameful. Babayemi said that the law must take its course if he is tried and found guilty. Olasunkanmi popularly known as “Seun Egbegbe’’ was alleged to have stolen nine iPhones at the Computer Village, in Ikeja.

A pastor of the Celestial Church of Christ, Johnson Dominic, has been hospitalised after he was allegedly tortured by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dr Emmanuel Eze, in Onosa community in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State. It was gathered that Pastor Dominic, who is the head of the CCC, New Jerusalem Parish, Onosa Avenue, was allegedly brutalised around 5pm on Tuesday by the ACP and his aides, who came to the area in a jeep.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has called on Americans to “speak with one voice and one heart” after a long and bruising political campaign. Trump’s plea was made in a video posted on YouTube after he announced the selection Wednesday of two more Cabinet officials on Wednesday. The officials are South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley who was appointed as ambassador to the United Nations and Michigan billionaire Betsy DeVos who would work as secretary of Education.

Transparency group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accoun3, has sent a letter to the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, requesting him to urgently “to appoint an independent counsel to investigate allegations of corruption in the spending of $16 billion on electricity by the government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007.” SERAP said the request was brought “pursuant to Section 52 of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000, and the letter and spirit of the Act, and the object and purpose of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).”

Olayinka also said that Fayemi illegally collected N5billion from Ecobank in the name of Fountain Holdings for purported road construction. He also alleged that Fayemi borrowed money on behalf of the state to build a Government House for his wife and children. He also alleged that Fayemi spent the state’s funds to build a private university for himself in Ghana. Omotoso said Fayemi refused to pay pensioners, but was “acting like armed robber and carted away Ekiti money”, adding that he was not “just saying it for fun that Fayemi stole Ekiti money, but he went away with Ekiti money and destroyed the economy of the state”.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday night returned to Abuja from Malabo, Equitorial Guinea, where he participated in the 4th Africa-Arab summit. The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that President Buhari while in Malabo participated in the opening ceremony and working session of the Summit, on Wednesday.

A commercial driver, Taiwo Oladepo, on Wednesday prayed an Agege Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his 11-year-old marriage over alleged lack of care and submission by the woman. Thirty-five-year-old Taiwo, father of four, resides at No. 29, Anthony Nwosu, Ileke Estate., Meiran, Lagos. He claimed that his 36-year-old wife, Biola, was troublesome, disobedient, not submissive and not caring. “My wife is too troublesome; she is stubborn, arrogant and not submissive. She is also lazy and wayward. “There has been no peace in this marriage; we live like cat and rat,’’ he told the court.

Film-maker Seun Egbegbe has debunked reports that he stole nine iPhones at a shop at the Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos State. In a statement Wednesday morning, Egbegbe, who described the allegation that he stole phones and was beaten up as laughable, said though he was at computer village, he was never arrested for stealing.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday urged Justice Mohammed Idris of a Federal High Court in Lagos to issue a warrant for the arrest of a former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, along with his former aide, Chief Waheed Akanbi, for allegedly laundering N4.7bn. A counsel for the anti-graft agency, Mr. Oluwafemi Olabisi, made the application on Friday following the absence of Ladoja in court for his proposed re-arraignment.

The Federal High Court Kano presided over by Justice Fatu Riman, Wednesday, convicted and sentenced a senior lawyer, Yakubu Mohammed Na-Allah, to four years imprisonment without option of fine for offences of money laundering to the tune of N50 million. The convict was arraigned by the EFCC on 14 January, 2013 on a two-count charge of money laundering. Upon arraignment, Na-Allah pleaded not guilty and subsequently trial commenced on 26 June, 2013 in which the prosecution called seven witnesses and tendered 15 exhibits.

The authorities of Osun state University UNIOSUN, has given reasons why a former lecturer of the institution, Dr. Olabode Ojoniyi, who was involved in a sex video scandal was sacked. Fielding questions from newsmen during an interactive session in Osogbo yesterday, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Labode Poopola stated that the randy lecturer was disengaged from the institution to send warning signal to others who are also in the act or may want to involve themselves in such act in the future.

Scores of commuters were subjected to trekking long distances on Wednesday morning following a multiple accident involving about five articulated vehicles on the Kara Bridge of the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. A speeding trailer loaded with petrol, witnesses said, caused the accident when it rammed into others, exploded and caught fire which extended to the others.

The Senate has rejected the 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees sent to it by President Muhammadu Buhari for approval. The lawmakers, who said the list would be returned to Buhari “for re-submission and re-jigging,” added that they rejected the nominees because of over 250 petitions against them.

A Federal High Court judge arrested five weeks ago has been charged by the Nigerian government for bribery and racketeering to the tune N552 million, court documents show. The Office of the Attorney-General filed a 15-count charge against Adeniyi Ademola at the High Court of Federal Capital Territory on Monday afternoon, detailing how he allegedly carried out the ignoble act within a period of two years.

Residents of the Oyingbo area of Lagos State have found a man, who was strangled, put in a rice sack and dumped beside a canal. The victim, whose name had yet to be ascertained, was found at the Jebba bus stop. It was gathered that the sack was initially thought to contain rubbish, until a policeman, attached to a commercial bank in the area, checked it and found the corpse.

The family of the late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, wife of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late MKO Abiola, has warned the former Chief Security Officer to late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd), to desist from uttering statements designed to derail the course of justice with respect to the assassination of their mother. The family, in a letter to Al-Mustapha, yesterday, signed by Mrs. Hafsat Abiola-Costello, also drew Al-Mustapha’s attention to Sergeant Roger’s “confession before the Oputa Panel,” that he (Al-Mustapha) gave him the gun to carry out the assassination.
