With a lot of kissing and tears, Jorge Armando Perez finally tied the knot with his fiancée Corina Chavez at an emotional ceremony inside a prison in Mexico where a total of 63 couples got hitched. Perez, who has lived his entire life in El Paso, Texas, was deported to Mexico seven months ago to begin serving a 40-year sentence for extortion in a prison just across the border in the northern city of Ciudad Juarez. And it was there that the 37-year-old met Chavez some three years ago. Together they have been raising six children, four from previous relationships. Holding his hand to seal their union in front of family members and officials, his 35-year-old wife pledged to visit him each Wednesday and Saturday and “every day possible” at this facility, which houses some 3,100 prisoners.

Woman allegedly slaps policeman who demanded N50 from motorcyclist

The Police on Monday arraigned a 27-year-old woman, Faith Michael,   in a Karu Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly slapping and intimidating a police officer. Michael was arraigned on a five-count, bordering on a joint act, obstructing public servant from discharging lawful duties, assault, defamation of character and intimidation, offences she denied committing. The prosecutor, Vincent Osuji, told the court that one Seargent David Akoru reported the matter at the Karu Police Station, Abuja, on April 15.

Woman tells police she raped her friend’s 12-year-old son by accident

A woman who was arrested for raping a child told police that it was an accident. 21-year-old Arnesha Tiara John Louis of Opelousas, Louisiana, was visiting a friend when she began horse playing with her friend’s 12-year-old son. According to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, while playing with the boy, Louis pulled down his pants, climbed on top of him, and sexually assaulted the child.

Five Iranian girls disguised themselves as men in order to get into a stadium to watch a football match on Sunday. The five young girls wore fake wigs and beards in order to escape the scrutiny of security men at the entrance of Azadi Stadium, as women are barred from attending male football matches. Daily Sabah reports that they wanted to watch their favourite team, Persepolis, receive their record 11th title as champions of Iran.

17-year-old girl pregnant student commits suicide in Rivers

Residents of Apamini Anex Road in Rumuokoro community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State were shocked when they learnt that Abibatu, a teenage girl living in the neighbourhood had committed suicide. Abibatu, who was a student of one of the secondary schools in the area, was said to have taken insecticide, which eventually choked her to death. Sources said that the 17-year-old girl was impregnated by a yet-to-be-identified person, a development that made her parents angry at her.  Abibatu, who was chastised on Friday by her angry parents, was said to have purchased the insecticide from one of the shop owners in the neighbourhood, who were not aware of her plans to commit suicide.

Viewers discretion advise An Argentine woman Brenda Barattini accused of cutting off her boyfriend’s penis with gardening scissors said she was provoked because he showed his friends their homemade sex tape, according to reports. The 26-year-old Barattini allegedly committed the revenge attack in the Nueva Cordoba area of the Argentine city of Cordoba last November, which left her 40-year-old boyfriend with 90 percent of his penis chopped off, and in life-threatening condition. Barattini, who is serving imprisonment without bail ahead of her trial, said she suffered great psychological harm because of the leaked tape by her boyfriend, Sergio Fernandez. “I cut his penis but not completely: I injured him. It wasn’t complete: I injured him,” she said, according to a translation of her jail interview.

Ex-Oyo governor’s son faces N40m fraud charge

Akinkunle Olunloyo, son of former governor old Oyo State, Dr Victor Olunloyo, was on Monday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding a financial institution to the tune of N40 million. Olunloyo, 40, a former night club owner, was charged alongside his entertainment firm, Code Media Ltd, by the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Lagos. They are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and fraud. Police Prosecutor Sylvester Azubuike told the court that Olunloyo and others still at large, committed the offences sometime in November 2014 in Lagos.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has assured the international community that President Muhammadu Buhari is healthy and fit to seek re-election in 2019. Mohammed, who has been on tour of major media houses and think-tank in the U.S., said there was nothing to fear about Buhari’s health as he declared his intention to seek re-election. The minister was first in Washington, D.C. and later in New York, where he explained that Buhari’s administration had done very well and recorded so many achievements in less than three years.

JOHESU strike: No end in sight as FG rejects demand of health workers

Isaac Adewole, minister of health, says the demand of officials of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) to be at par with doctors in terms of salary is neither practicable nor acceptable.  Disclosing this in a statement on Monday, Adewole said the current administrationt has offered to adjust the salaries and wages of the health workers.  He was reacting to the advertorial by JOHESU in some national dailies. “As a responsible government, we will do everything within our power to bring the ongoing strike action to an end as quickly as possible,” read a statement Olajide Oshundun, health ministry assistant director of information, issued on Adewole’s behalf.

Kerosene, the most used petroleum product among underprivileged Nigerians, is either unavailable or very expensive wherever it is sold, a special survey has shown. Whereas the product is brought in by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) which sells at the subsidised pump price of N150, it is hardly available at the official outlets. Buyers are forced to patronise roadside re-sellers who charge as high as N500 per litre in some states, particularly in the north-east — officially Nigeria’s poorest region. In its first Price of Fuel Survey conducted in 13 states across Nigeria and the federal capital territory, TheCable sent researchers to hundreds of retail outlets — otherwise known as filling stations — in search of kerosene.

Nigerian billionaires, international oil companies and other operators have been identified as owners of the 49 oil block licences some of which expired since 2010. Our correspondent gathered that nine Oil Mining Leases (six of which are currently producing) and 40 Oil Prospecting Licences, many of which were awarded during the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, had expired. OML 103, from which Conoil Producing Limited, owned by Chief Mike Adenuga, expired in 2013, while the lease renewal process was said to be ongoing. The company’s OPLs 290 and 257 expired in 2013 and 2016 respectively. Also, OPL 204, owned by Africoil & Marketing Company Limited, expired in 2010, and OPLs 236 while 244 operated by Mr. Wale Tinubu’s Oando Plc and Nigeria Agip Exploration respectively expired in 2011.

A 29-year-old Saudi man was in for the shock of his life when his wife, whom he loved so much, approached the court for a divorce. The estranged husband did not know why his wife would want divorce from him even though he did everything possible for her, but she was adamant in her demand. She admitted that her husband had never denied anything to her but she insisted on leaving him because he preferred her over his own mother. "I can never trust a man who does everything for his wife while he denies even a small favor to his mother," she told the judge. Neither the husband nor wife was identified. Saudi Man kills his three daughters, injures Nigerian wife in Makkah

In a gruesome act, a Saudi citizen in Makkah’s Al-Malawi district slaughtered his three little daughters and tried to kill his wife before neighbors came to her rescue. The killer father gave himself up to the police after the crime. The police did not identify the man but said he was a 33-year-old security guard, who was a drug addict. They identified the three daughters as 2-year-old Ritaj, 4-year-old Rimaz and 6-year-old Renad. The assassin told the police that he could not sleep for three nights because of differences with his Nigerian wife who wanted him to spend more money on his daughters so he slaughtered all three of them with a knife.

The former first lady of Ekiti State, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi, has sent condolence message to her friend, Ambassador Eniola Olaitan Ajayi, who lost her daughter, Dolapo, on the day she (Mrs. Ajayi) was burying her father. Ajayi is currently Nigeria’s ambassador to Hungary. In a piece titled, Loud Whispers: When there are no words, published on her website, Mrs. Fayemi narrated the events that led to the death of the 27-year-old lady. In her condolence message to Ajayi, Fayemi said people had gathered to bury Ambassador Ajayi’s father when Dolapo suddenly dropped dead. She was later diagnosed as having died of ruptured brain aneurysm.

A housewife, Mrs Sandra Ekpa, on Friday begged an Upper Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, to dissolve her three-year-old marriage because her husband allegedly practices juju and also denies her sex. Ekpa told the court that her pastor husband, Gideon Adejoh, had ruined their marriage and killed the love she had for him. She said that she married Adejoh on April 18, 2015 according to native laws and custom of the Igala people in Kogi. She said that the union was blessed with a child. 

Court orders Bello to pay civil servant’s salary

The National Industrial Court, Abuja, on Friday ordered the Kogi Government to pay a civil servant, Ameh Onoj, whose salary was stopped in March 2014. Onoja had approached the court to seek redress when he was told that his salary was stopped because he had attained the compulsory retirement age. Justice David Isele in his judgment, held that evidence before the court showed that the claimant had not reached the mandatory retirement age of 60. Isele also said neither has the claimant spent 35 years in service as required by civil service rule before retirement.

A graduate of the University of Port Harcourt has died after sustaining an injury at the National Youth Service Corps’ Kwara State Orientation Camp at Yikpata, Edu Local government ‎area of the state. The deceased, Miss Eva Iche Amadi, reportedly suffered a bone fracture during the morning drill on April 23 after which she was rushed to the camp clinic. An online source claimed Miss Amadi was given a wrong injection at the camp clinic, which led to her fainting and later giving up the ghost.

Senate indicts NNPC for illegal fuel subsidy, orders N216bn refund

The Senate has declared the current payments by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation for subsidy of premium motor spirit (petrol) illegal. It asked the corporation to refund the sum of N216bn spent for the purpose in 2017 under the guise of “operational costs” into the Federal Government’s coffers. The legislature also asked the corporation to stop further payment of the subsidy, while asking it to pay the arrears owed fuel marketers.

Order Saraki, Melaye, others to refund ‘illegal N13.5m allowance with interest,’ SERAP asks court

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked the Federal High Court in Lagos to order the Senate President Bukola Saraki, Senator Dino Melaye and 107 other senators to refund “illegal and unconstitutional N13.5 monthly allowance receives by each senator with interest, and to stop the lawmakers from receiving such unjustified allowances.” SERAP is also asking the court to order “an investigation by appropriate agencies as to how the public funds that have so far been received by each senator have been spent and for the findings of any such investigation to be made public.” In the Suit Number FHC/L/CS/630/18 filed yesterday, SERAP argues that, “The defence put forward by the Senators that the said sum is contained in the Appropriations Act with different headings like medicals, travelling, etc holds no water. Pharmacist seeks 8m for kidney transplant

Living with a disabling disease is currently the lot of Mrs Adeola Abigael Ojo (Nee Adedoyin), a 35 years old pharmacist. A medical report signed by Dr R.A. Olarenwaju, a Consultant Nephrologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, confirmed Adeola has End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).  The doctor recommended the permanent remedy is a kidney transplant, estimated to cost N8,000,000. Narrating her plight, she said it all began one day in 2013 when she woke up feeling weak all over.

Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Senator Dino Melaye, APC, Kogi West has been arrested by operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS. Senator Melaye was this morning, taken to the SARS detention facility located just opposite the old Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN junction along the Area 1 expressway. The SARS detention facility is reputed for imprisoning hardened criminals arrested for theft, murder, cultism and other criminal acts. It was gathered that the Nigeria Police Force forcefully carried out the arrest of Melaye without arrest warrant or court order. The Zamfara Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Monday confirmed the death of 10 persons in an auto crash. The victims included three biological children and seven other family members of Alhaji Saidu Yarkufoji, a member of Zamfara State House of Assembly, representing Bakura State Constituency. Other family members of the lawmaker, who died in the accident were four of his grandchildren, his two sisters and his driver.

She raped me, says man that impregnated his 21-yr-old daughter

A 50-year-old private guard, who was arrested for having carnal knowledge of his daughter, which resulted in pregnancy, has said his daughter raped him, while also blaming his indulgence on the devil. Preliminary investigation by policemen at Igando Division revealed that the suspect, Taiwo Oyelabi, had been sleeping with his biological daughter since November 2017. It was further revealed that he often went to work with his daughter, aged 21, where the act also took place. Trouble started for the girl, who is a twin, after her parents separated. Their aunt, who resides in Cote D’Ivoire, took custody of the children until they returned last year. Explaining how the suspect was arrested, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Imohimi Edgal, who described the act as not only un-African but against the law and humanity, said: “Sometime in November 2017, the suspect took the now grown girl from his sister and brought her home to live with him in his house at Iyaba-Oba.

Farmer kills wife for failing to cook his favourite meal, commits suicide

A 35-year-old farmer, Emmanuel Awugye, has reportedly committed suicide by hanging after allegedly killing his 32-year-old wife, Ama Baduwaa. The incident took place at Awugyekrom near Adansi Fumso in the Ashanti region of Ghana on Monday morning. Emmanuel’s uncle, Ibrahim Abu, who disclosed the incident to Adomonline, said the body of Emmanuel Awugye was found hanging on a tree in a different location.

Nigeria’s National Assembly has paid out a total N6.6billion for purchase of exotic cars for its members, PREMIUM TIMES and UDEME can authoritatively report today. Official documents obtained by this newspaper showed that the purchases were made by the three arms of the federal parliament—the Senate, the House of Representatives and the management unit of the lawmaking arm. Records show that the Senate is the biggest spender, purchasing a total N3.2billion worth of cars from 10 different contractors. The lower chamber followed closely, acquiring N3billion worth of exotic cars in 17 deals. The management of the National Assembly wrapped up the car procurement extravaganza, taking delivery of N430million worth of cars using five different dealers.

South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma is hugging the headlines again with reports that he has fathered a new baby from a 24-year-old woman. She gave birth to his child in a Durban hospital last week Thursday on his birthday, News24 reported yesterday. The mother is identified as Nonkanyiso Conco and is set to become Zuma’s seventh wife. Zuma is 76 years old. “Yes‚ we are getting married‚ but that is all I can say. I need to consult before I give any interviews‚” she said. Conco is a director of the Pietermaritzburg-based Nomkhubulwane Culture and Youth Development Organisation‚ aimed at protecting the cultural practices of young Zulu women.

The Nigerian Army has explained what led to the burning down of a Benue community by its troops on Wednesday, saying the attack followed the killing of one soldier by some residents. The soldier was allegedly buried in a shallow grave a day before, but the apparent reprisal by the army resulted in the death of one elderly citizen who was killed in the blaze. Photographs of the victim’s charred body covered in soot were sent to our correspondent. News broke about the attack by irate soldiers who stormed Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area, burning down residential buildings and commercial stores. Properties and goods, especially cash crops, estimated in millions were destroyed during the incident.

The Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, has confirmed the suspension of Professor Richard Akindele, for allegedly demanding sex from a postgraduate student at the school, Miss. Monica Osagie. Ogunbodede, who said this in a statement on Thursday, added that the committee set up by the university to investigate the sex-for-mark allegation, established a prima face case against the lecturer. This is just as the alleged victim denied knowledge of the incident, saying she did not know why her name was mentioned and who leaked the recording. Akindele had in a telephone conversation allegedly demanded five rounds of sex from Osagie to change her mark from 33 to a pass. The leaked conversation went viral on the social media as Nigerians called for thorough investigation into the incident and punishment of culprits.

A pregnant teenager’s womb was ripped opened by unidentified people, who took the unborn baby away and also killed three others on Wednesday. The victims, as gathered, include Pastor Joseph Nheme, Mr. Kingsley Owhonda, Miss Queen Ada Amah and Miss Mini Elizabeth. A community source, who preferred anonymity, disclosed that Pastor Nheme, who is from Igodo’s compound, was shot at the riverside while fishing with his son, Godknows Iheme, adding that Godknows narrowly escaped while his father’s corpse was taken away by the invaders. The source said Owhonda, from Wokne’s compound, who also went for fishing, was abducted and taken to a bush, where he was tied to a tree and cut in pieces until he died. The source further revealed that Amah, a pregnant teenager from Kpalikwu-Imoh’s compound in the same Rumuoro, was killed and the killers opened her womb and took away her unborn baby.

Bank mistakenly transfers $34bn to customer

Online photos Germany’s biggest lender Deutsche Bank on Friday admitted to a massive erroneous transfer of €28bn ($34 billion) in a routine operation, more than the entire bank is worth. The unprecedented mistake happened on March 16 when Deutsche Bank carried out a transfer to an account at Deutsche Boerse’s Eurex clearing house, a spokesman told AFP. The operation was meant to involve a far smaller sum, which the bank has not revealed, and highlights IT and control issues at the banking giant.

Falae visits Obasanjo, says Buhari has failed and Need Not Contest for 2019

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, says the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has not performed well, adding that he was expecting him not to seek re-election in 2019. He said this on Tuesday while fielding questions from journalists after he paid a private visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He said the current administration had failed in its primary responsibility of protecting lives and property, arguing that Nigerians were being slaughtered daily and government could not stop the ugly trend. Though he described Buhari as his friend, he faulted him on his reluctance to embrace restructuring having promised to do so during his campaign at the Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State in 2015.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, Monday, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop blaming past leaders for his inability to fulfill his campaign promises. Fayose Reacting to the president’s statement, on Sunday, while receiving some members of the Buhari Diaspora Support Organisation in London, Fayose said: “It appears Buhari has forgotten that he is also among the past leaders of Nigeria because blaming past leaders for the country’s economic problems amounts to blaming himself. The negative foundation the likes of President Buhari laid caused the problems of the country.” In a statement, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said: “It is appalling that Buhari, who at a very young age was Military Governor of a North Eastern State; Petroleum Minister, Head of State and later Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF, under the Abacha administration, is the same person that is blaming past leaders of Nigeria.”
