Prominent Imam, two others dead, As 20 houses destroyed In Gombe flood ravages

Flooding caused by heavy rainfall has killed three people and destroyed 20 houses in Gombe State, just as eight other persons were injured from the effects of the rainfall, an official said. Some of the areas affected include Jekadafari, Nasarawo, Tudun Wada, all in the state capital, Gombe.  The Executive Sectary of the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Danlami Rukuije, said the dead include a prominent Islamic scholar and second Imam of Al-Burhan Masjid in the state capital, Muhammad Bello.

Ikeja Electric employee electrocuted during repair work in Ikorodu

The sleepy Isawo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, was, yesterday, jolted into tension as a male employee of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, IKEDC, was electrocuted while trying to fix power problems caused by road reconstruction in the area. The victim was confirmed dead on the spot at the scene of the incident at Olainukan Bus Stop. It was learned that due to the ongoing road construction in the area, some electricity poles were re-positioned, leading to power outage. Due to complaints by residents, some employees of the distribution company were sent to fix the problems.

Insecurity: It’s not Buhari’s duty to maintain law, order in states—Aregbesola, Falana

With the persistent attacks by herdsmen in Nigeria, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State and human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, yesterday, urged state governors to take urgent steps at nipping the attacks in the bud, saying it was not the Federal Government’s duty to maintain law and order in states. They argued that constitutionally, it was the responsibility of governors to maintain law and order in their states.   The Police anti-crime team attached to the Delta state Police Command, Asaba, has arrested six suspected assassins in last Saturday night’s murder of the Sapele Butchers’ Association chairman, Mr. Michael Onyeachi Nweke.  Police spokesperson in the state, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects said; “We have arrested six persons in connection with the murder. Twin brothers found dead inside freezer in Anambra

Tragedy struck on Friday in Egbu Umuenem village, Otolo Nnewi community in Nnewi North local government area of Anambra state, was a set of twins, named Peter and Paul aged six years were found dead in an abandoned freezer in their apartment. The deceased boys whose parents, Mr and Mrs Nwachukwu Onwe, an automobile mechanic and trader hailing from an undisclosed village in Ebonyi State were said to have taken home the deceased bodies of the twins on Saturday afternoon after a search party had revealed their bodies hidden in the freezer. Applicant gets 5 months imprisonment for stealing fiancée’s money, phone

  A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced a 34-year-old applicant, Elvis Anthony, to five months imprisonment for stealing his fiancée’s money and cell phone. The Judge, Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave the convict an option of N5,000 fine. Anthony, of Aso Pada, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, was convicted on a count charge of theft. The convict had admitted committing the offence and urged the court to temper justice with mercy. He also said the complainant was his fiancée.

Intoxicated women appear in court on drunk, disorderly charges

Two women who appeared in court drunk to face charges of drunkenness and disorderly behaviour have been sentenced to jail for 14 days with the option of a Ksh.500 ($4.93). Appearing before Principal Magistrate Samuel Mutai, the two women – Faith Muthoni and Purity Muthoni – pleaded not guilty to the offence, reports Citizen Kenya. The pair were arrested for drunkenness and disorderly behaviour on Tuesday. The court heard that on May 29, 2018, at around 10pm in Embu township, Kenya, the Muthoni sisters were found staggering and shouting abusive words at other members of the public due to their state of intoxication.

A member of the House of Representatives who represents Kachia/Kagarko federal constituency, Adams Jagaba, has formally defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The Kaduna lawmaker in a letter read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, cited injustice and continued suspension from the APC as his reason for defecting to the PDP. Mr. Jagaba had dumped the APC after the party announced his suspension. He also described the APC as a sinking ship.

Nigerian Senate investigates OAU sex-for-mark scandal

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday resolved to probe a sex-for-mark case at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The institution was enmeshed in a scandal in April after a leaked phone recording exposed a lecturer seeking sex from a female student to pass her in an examination. In the audio, the lecturer, Richard Akindele, a professor, requested five days of sex from Monica Osagie, a masters student of the institution. Even though OAU has investigated the case and placed the professor on indefinite suspension, the Senate said more needed to be done to stem the trend. Presenting a motion on Wednesday, Biodun Olujimi (Ekiti-PDP) harped on the need to investigate the case and growing culture of sexual harassment in Nigerian institutions. Mrs Olujimi said an investigation by the lawmakers will ensure that the issue is not swept under the carpet like others.

Ex-Taraba governor Jolly Nyame jailed 14 years for misappropriating state funds

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has sentenced a former Taraba State governor, Jolly Nyame, to 14 years in prison without an option of fine. Mr Nyame was found guilty of 27 out of 41 counts of alleged diversion of public funds while he served as governor of Taraba State. He was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly diverting N1.64 billion while he served as governor between 1999 to 2007. The judge sentenced the defendant to four different terms in prison, after finding him guilty of receiving gratification, obtaining public funds without due consideration, criminal breach of trust and gratification.

Health workers blow hot, say no going back on strike

The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) says it will continue its nationwide strike until the federal government implements certain agreements reached between the two parties on September 30, 2017. JOHESU said it will not be deterred by a court injunction compelling its members to return to work. Josiah Biobelemoye, national chairman of the union, made this known on Monday at a rally in Abuja. He said the rally was aimed at updating members with current developments regarding the ongoing strike, including the recent court order. Police undress woman with beard to confirm gender

A woman, Teresiah Mumbi, has threatened to sue two police officers from Nairobi, Kenya, after they allegedly forced her to undress to confirm her gender because she has a   beard. Mumbi, 31, said she was stripped on May 15 after being arrested for a traffic offence, reports Myjoyonline.  Speaking on Friday at KTN Television, the woman said two unidentified female officers demanded to confirm whether she was a man or a woman. “Those two female officers came and demanded that I undress and I put my legs apart. After they were satisfied they let me back to the cell,” Mumbi said.

Football academy owner allegedly shaves children’s pubic hair

A football academy owner, Victor Achidume, has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly shaving the armpits and pubic hair of some children for alleged ritual purposes.  The 43-year-old was alleged to have given the children between N100 and N200 after shaving their pubic hair. The state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, during a press briefing on Monday said six victims had testified against the suspect.  He said, “Victor Achidume, a suspected cult member, lured some young people, aged between 11 to 15 years, to his house after a football game, shaved their armpits and pubic hair ostensibly for ritual purposes, and thereafter gave them between N100 and N200. About six boys came forward and said there were still some of their colleagues, who they were going to come forward. “Naturally, the suspect denied the allegation. However, I was quick to ask him a question – Is there any possible reason why the young boys will want to tell lies or frame you?

We gave lawmakers N17bn to pass 2015 budget —Okonjo-Iweala

Former finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has revealed the blackmail and arm twisting that characterised budget passing by the National Assembly during the Goodluck Jonathan Administration. She cited an instance in 2015 when the National Assembly leadership forced the executive arm to part with N17 billion for the federal lawmakers to pass that year’s budget. That, she said, was at a time crude price had gone down drastically. Customs officer shoots 70-year-old dead for intervening in argument

At 70, family and friends had looked up to Lamidi Oke, a farmer from Olorunda village, Oyo State, for survival, until last Monday when a trigger-happy Customs officer dashed their hopes. The septuagenarian was allegedly shot dead by the officer while he was trying to intervene in an argument between some Customs operatives and youths in the community over a barrier erected on a road within the neighbourhood. The villagers put up the barrier – two poles on both sides of the road with a bamboo placed across them – to curb the recurring accidents caused by reckless motorists plying the route. It was gathered that a team of six Customs officers in a Hilux van got to the spot around 12:00pm and saw Lamidi and his younger brother, Muritala Oke, who were returning from the farm. Former President Goodluck Jonathan says he is ashamed that Nigeria is now being used as a negative example in the international community. He cited recent instances when the Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, mocked the poor state of security in Nigeria and the naira’s weakening status. A coterie of political enthusiasts on Wednesday berated President Muhammadu Buhari for commending the late military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha. The coterie, during separate interviews on Wednesday, described Buhari’s statement as a distraction. The President had on Tuesday said, “I don’t care the opinion you have about Abacha, but I agreed to work with him and we constructed roads from Abuja to Port Harcourt, Benin to Onitsha and so on.” Commenting on the statement, the Chairperson of the Transition Monitoring Group, Dr. Abiola. IPPIS: FG threatens to stop salaries of civil servants from Monday

The Federal Government, yesterday, threatened to stop, with effect from Monday, payment of salaries to civil servants who failed to update their records in the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System, IPPIS. Winifred Oyo-Ita The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, HoCSF, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, who disclosed this at the one-day sensitization workshop on strategy and implementation in Abuja, also said her office was already working with the Presidential Committee on Minimum Wage for an upward review of civil servants’ salaries.  Oyo-Ita said government has exceeded its extension limit for civil servants to update their records, stating that the IPPIS portal would be closed next Monday. She warned that any civil servant who failed to do so by Monday, May 28, 2018, would be automatically shut out of the pay roll system.

An 18-year-old girl, yesterday, told a Special and Sexual Offences Court, sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, how her biological father, Folorunsho Oluwaseun, told her he will suck her breasts to make them as big as her mates, and then ended up having sexual intercourse with her for four years. The victim is the first prosecution witness in an ongoing trial involving her father and Lagos State before Justice Sybil Nwaka. Led in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Babajide Boye, she informed the court that the father started abusing her sexually right from when she was 12 years old, at their Ikorodu home in Lagos. Suspected cultist kills rival, sells palms for N5,000 in Ogun

A suspected cultist, Kayode Oreneye, was on Wednesday paraded by the Ogun State Police command, for allegedly killing one Shakiru, a member of a rival cult group, severed his two hands and sold the palms for a sum of N5,000 to a herbalist. Twenty-seven-year-old Oreneye, who was a member of Aiye cult group, was paraded alongside other 47 suspected criminals who were arrested for offences ranging from armed robbery, murder, and theft. They were paraded at the command’s state headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, by the State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu. Oreneye told journalists that the late Shakiru belonged to a rival cult group, Eiye, and claimed that the deceased had attempted to kill him on three occasions but he escaped.

Man jailed six months for sending 7,648 texts to ex-wife

A court in Austria on Wednesday sentenced a man who sent his ex-wife 7,648 text messages within six weeks to six months in prison.  The 33-year-old Romanian national, was charged with stalking and making dangerous threats. The man and his wife separated earlier this year after six years of marriage.  The man reacted to the break-up by sending a barrage of messages, including 50 in which he threatened the woman.

Mr. Ogunsanya Adetoro, the best graduating student at the Lagos State University (LASU), in the 2016/2017 academic session, said he failed his first WAEC and NECO examinations due to health challenges. The 24-year-old graduate of Business Administration, with a Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate (CGPA) of 4.7, said during the convocation on Wednesday that he inherited cataract from his father. According to him, the health challenge greatly affected his performance in the final examination in secondary school. She was a flirt, says spare parts dealer who killed wife in Oshodi

A vehicle parts dealer, Tochukwu Chukwu, at the popular Ladipo Spare Parts Market in Lagos, has said he stabbed his wife, Joy, to death because she was a flirt. The suspect was apprehended by vigilant residents, while attempting to dispose her corpse which he put inside a bucket, at night. It was also gathered that when the suspect, Tochukwu, was caught he gave the impression that he was taking his dead wife’s remains to the mortuary, but the neighbours became suspicious when the four people who accompanied him ran away on sighting the Police. A source said when the Police took the corpse to the mortuary for postmortem examination, it was discovered that the victim was stabbed in the back with a knife. “Based on the new discovery, the Police invited Tochukwu for further questioning,” the source added. Ondo Assembly Reverses Impeachment Of Deputy Speaker

The Ondo State House of Assembly has reversed the impeachment of the Deputy Speaker, Iroju Ogundeji. Hon. Ogundeji was impeached on Tuesday during plenary and replaced with Bimbo Fajolu. The reversal of the impeachment was moved in a motion by the Majority Leader, Hon. Gbenga Araoyinbo and seconded by Hon. Fatai Olotu from Akoko North East Constituency. According to the legislators, the reversal was as a result of the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians including leadership of APC in the state, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun amongst others.

Husband, wife disagree on cause of conflict, agree to divorce

A Shari’a Court sitting at Magajin Gari in Kaduna, on Tuesday dissolved the marriage between Sirajo Abdullahi and Nazira Ahmad over ‘irreconcilable differences.’ The wife took the case before the court on May 2, and accused the husband of assault and failing in his ‘matrimonial duties.’ On his part, the husband accused the wife of having extra marital affairs and attempting to kill him.  When the case was first mentioned on May 2, the judge had directed the guardians of the couple to appear before it today.

Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed said yesterday that 15 revenue-generating agencies of the federal government failed to remit N8.1 trillion to the Federation Account between 2010 and 2015. He spoke in Osogbo, the Osun State capital while inaugurating the Channelization, De-silting, Flood Control and Development of Okoko and Ogbagba Rivers, phases one and two, on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari. He said the discovery by the auditing firm KPMG is many times worse than the N1.34 trillion carted away by 55 public officials between 2006 and 2013. “Recently, the Federal Government ordered an audit (between 2010 and 2015) of 15 government revenue-generating agencies. The result was the discovery that the agencies had not remitted over 8.1 trillion Naira to the Federation Account. This amount is about six times the N1.34 trillion that was stolen between 2006 and 2015.

Buhari, Atiku shouldn’t contest presidency in 2019 – Northern coalition

The Coalition of Northern Groups on Monday in Kaduna asked President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who are above 70 years, not to contest the presidency of the country in 2019. The group said such leaders were responsible for where the country found itself, adding that the country should be led by young Nigerians that could take it to the Promised Land. The CNG’s position was contained in a communiqué it issued shortly after the end of a two-day summit which was held at the Arewa House, Kaduna on Monday. The coalition gave the Ndigbo a notice to leave the North last year . It however withdrew the notice to quit months later.

SGF unveils N64m website, says critics not FG’s enemies

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, on Monday inaugurated what he described as the upgraded website of his office, www.osgf.gov.ng. Speaking at an event in his office in Abuja, Mustapha put the cost of the upgraded website at N64m. The Federal Government had allocated N65m for the project in the 2017 Budget. “There was a contract in 2017. The figure is in the public domain. It is about N64m, including procurement of laptops, training, consultancy services. “The contract was awarded by the Bureau of Public Procurement in accordance with the Procurement Act,” Mustapha said when he was asked to state the cost of the upgrade.

PDP carpets Bello over non-payment of salary

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kogi state, on Monday said the excuse offered by the state government for its non-payment of salary as laughable and lie. The party said the state government was only attempting to justify its failure by blaming the development on servicing inherited debt from the previous administration. The party in a statement by its director research and documentation, Achadu Dickson, Lokoja, said the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration was a sinking ship that is looking for every excuse to hide its shame and failures. The PDP said the Capt Idris Wada administration handed over a state that was financially buoyant, with a debt profile of the only N800million, to the present administration, lamenting that in two years of the APC administration the state had incurred the debt of N45billion.

Killer of our daughter must marry her corpse, parents of lady stabbed to death

There was a new twist over the death of a 19 year old girl, Chinyere Ebere, who was stabbed to death for refusing to date her killer, Saliu Oladayo, as the parents insisted that the suspect must marry her corpse before burial.  The parents of the deceased, Mr and Mrs Nwanma, who hailed from Orlu in Imo state, said Oladayo must perform the traditional marriage rites before Chinyere could be buried in their home town. Speaking with Nigerian Tribune in their Oke Aro home in the capital city of Akure, Mrs Nwanma said “it is a tradition in our place that the man must marry the corpse of our daughter killed in cold blood. ”He must perform the normal traditional rites by taking the corpse to our village in Orlu East in Imo State where the marriage would take place.

Lady dies after taking ‘spiritual’ concoction

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a prophet, Micheal Dominic, for allegedly administering concoction to a lady who visited him for spiritual healing in company with her boyfriend at the Ajangbadi area of Lagos. The victim, Rahamat Audu, was said to have died after taking the concoction. Dominic, who heads the Celestial Church of Christ, Jesusegun parish, Santana bus stop, Ajangbadi, was paraded by the police on Monday alongside the deceased’s boyfriend, Ifeanyi Enyinna, for alleged conspiracy and murder. It was gathered that 25-year-old Rahamat lived with her boyfriend on Lekan Street, Shibiri. According to the boyfriend, the deceased had on Thursday complained of having a cough and went to the church to seek a spiritual solution.

Lagos politician batters phone repairer for meddling in fight with wife

A phone repairer, Rasheed Sunkanmi, is in trouble after meddling in a scuffle between a Lagos politician and his wife on Jimoh Akinsanya Street, Arepo, Ogun State. Sunkanmi was going home on a motorcycle when he saw a crowd on the street trying to stop the politician, identified as Odukunle Kuti, from beating up his wife. The phone repairer was said to have made a snide remark at the politician for beating up a woman, which the ex-councillor of the Ikosi/Isheri Local Council Development Area overheard. Our correspondent learnt that the politician, who also owned a hotel in Arepo, confronted the stranger for meddling in his family affair. The confrontation reportedly resulted in a fight between the duo as they tore each other’s clothes into shreds.

We’ve recovered stolen trillions of naira, Buhari boasts

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said since its inception in 2015, his administration has succeeded in recovering trillions of naira stolen by those he described as people without conscience. He also admitted that anti-corruption war is not easy to fight because it affects different branches of national lives.  The President also denied allegations that his government embarks on witch-hunts in the fight against graft. Buhari said these in his address at the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission located at Jabi District in Abuja.

2018 budget up from N8.612tn to N9.120trn

The new size of the 2018 budget is N9.120trn. This is contained in the report of the National Assembly joint Committees on Appropriation just presented to members. The new figure has a difference of about N508bn, up from the N8.612tn presented by President Muhammadu Buhari on November 7, 2017.

Teenager killed by brother, cousin over missing phone

A 17-year-old Mahmud Adamu was over the weekend reportedly killed by his elder brother, Nura Adamu, 19, and Hussaini Adamu, his cousin, over alleged missing cell phone. The Niger police command spokesman, Muhammad Abubakar confirmed the incident to journalists in Minna. Abubakar said the deceased was left in a pool of blood after he was severely beaten by the suspects who were still at large.

Man pours hot semo on wife

A 35-year-old man, Bawa Joshua, was on Monday tried before in Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly pouring hot semovita on his wife, Grace. The police prosecutor, Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 7, at about 8:00 p.m., at Ayoomodara St., Ado-Ekiti. He said the defendant quarreled with the complainant, and in the process poured hot semovita on her, which caused her harm.

Politician charged with abetting wife’s suicide

Indian Police on Monday charged the country’s Congress leader, Shashi Tharoor, to court for abetting the suicide of his wife, Sunanda Pushkar. Tharoor is the only person who has been arrayed as an accused in the case. The police in its charge sheet, which runs into around 3,000 pages, has also alleged that Tharoor had subjected his wife to cruelty. The police filed the charge sheet in the mysterious death of Pushkar before metropolitan magistrate Dharmendra Singh, who will consider it on May 24.

Crocodile that Attack bride’s arm finally tracked down and killed

Zimbabwe game rangers have killed the crocodile which attacked newly-wed, Zanele Ndlovu-Fox, just five days to her wedding and battered her right arm. This was confirmed via a statement released to the media. “We have since managed to track and kill the crocodile because since it tasted human blood, it was bound to be a problem,” said Tinashe Farawo, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.
