Around 9am today, a certain young woman allegedly confessed to being a witch, after being rescued from a gutter she was trapped in around Abalti Barracks, Ojuelegba in Surulere, Lagos. According to   reports,   a passerby had noticed someone stretching out her hand from a very small hole in a 6ft deep gutter just in front of the Army Barracks and calling out for help. The passerby quickly ran into the Army barracks to get help.

A law allowing men in Kenya to marry as many women as they want was signed into law on Tuesday by President Uhuru Kenyatta, despite criticism from women's groups.

A father of two, Mr. John Ujatalor, has accused the Medical Director of Ogbeide Medical Centre Ubiaja, Edo State, Dr. John Ogbeide, of negligence in the death of his baby and  wife, Eunice. Eunice was said to have died on April 5, 2014 while she was being delivered of the baby at the hospital. She was said to have been over 10 months pregnant at the time. In a telephone interview with  Punch Metro , Ujatatlor said the scan results showed Eunice was expected to give birth in March 2014. Ujatalor said, “Eunice had her first two deliveries in that hospital. Naturally when she was pregnant for the third time, we went back there. Ogbeide told us that from the scan results, Eunice ought to have given birth in March. Ogbeide also said from his own calculation, she ought to have delivered in February. The police in Ekiti State have arrested a 57-year-old Vice-Principal of St. Mary Girls College, Ikole Ekiti, Mr. Ayo Ajayi, for allegedly raping a 12-year-old pupil of the school inside his office. Our correspondent gathered that the pupil had gone to the office of the vice-principal on March 18 and she did not come out as quickly as expected. This was said to have fueled the suspicion of some teachers. One of the teachers, who reported the case to the police, was said to have moved closer to the door to open it but discovered that the door had been locked from inside. She was said to have knocked on the door and the pupil and the suspect allegedly hurriedly stopped what they were busy doing inside. The demeanour of the VP and the pupil was said to have given them away and one of the teachers reported the case to the police.

The Trade Union Congress has recommended death  penalty for public officials who embezzle beyond N1m in order to reduce corruption in the country. The President of the TUC, Bobboi Kaigama, said this during the fourth lecture series of the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Tuesday. While speaking on the theme, ‘Corruption and challenges in nation-building’, Kaigama noted that Nigeria needed to go tougher in its war against corruption. Commuters were caught up in travel chaos this morning as London Underground workers went on strike in protest at plans to close Tube ticket offices. Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union walked out for 48 hours at 9pm last night, while disruption is also set to continue next week. Passengers have been told services will start later and finish earlier during this week's strike, which will be followed by a three-day stoppage from 9pm next Monday. This morning senior Tories said the strike was ‘economic sabotage’, and called on Labour leader Ed Miliband to stand up to the unions.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye has apologised over the ferry disaster, in a statement to cabinet shown on national television. Park said that the government had failed to prevent the disaster and bungled its emergency response. Her apology comes amid ongoing work to retrieve bodies from the sunken hull. The ferry sank with 476 people aboard – most of them high school students and teachers – off South Korea on 16 April. A total of 174 were rescued. The remainder have been confirmed dead or missing presumed drowned. Officials have retrieved almost 200 bodies and divers are continuing to search for those still unaccounted for.

The stabbing of Ann Maguire in front of her pupils triggered a national debate over security in UK chools last night. Head teachers demanded stronger backing for schools which choose to introduce airport-style metal detectors and frisk pupils for weapons. But they said schools must not be ‘locked down’ in the wake of the incident. Staffs have repeatedly voiced concern over the risk of violent attacks on school premises. Latest figures show that 550 pupils a year are expelled from schools in England for assaulting a member of staff and 17,000 short-term suspensions are handed out. Last week, police disclosed that nearly 1,000 children – 80 of them primary pupils – have been caught taking weapons into school in three years. A survey of teachers found that more than half have been subjected to verbal abuse or threats from pupils.

School headteacher Philip Lawrence was murdered in 1995 when he attempted to protect one of his pupils from being attacked by a street gang.  The 48-year-old was hit over the head with an iron bar, kicked and then stabbed through the heart, outside St George's Roman Catholic School in Maida Vale, north-west London. The fatal blow was struck by 15-year-old Learco Chindamo, who had denied the crime but was convicted and jailed for a minimum of 12 years in 1996. A devoted teacher was stabbed to death in front of her horrified class yesterday by a pupil said to have a grudge against her. Children screamed as the 15-year-old boy calmly walked up behind Ann Maguire in the middle of a lesson and repeatedly stabbed her in the neck with a kitchen knife.  It is thought to be the first time a pupil has killed a teacher in a British classroom. The attack comes 18 years after headmaster Philip Lawrence was stabbed to death outside the gates of his school. As Mrs Maguire was being attacked, a fellow  teacher raced in and grabbed the boy. Other staff helped to detain him until police arrived.  The middle class pupil, who was described as an ‘outcast’, has a picture of the Grim Reaper on his Facebook page. Mrs Maguire, 61, was taken to hospital by paramedics after the attack, at  around 11.45am. A spokesperson for Amaka Igwe studios told NET the sad incident occurred in Enugu where she had gone, in company of her husband, for pre-production preparations for a new Igbo soap. ‘She suffered an asthma attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital after initial interventions had failed. She passed on before getting to the hospital’, a statement issued this morning read. Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm. Asthma attacks are triggered by a number of environmental and genetic interactions and usually come unannounced. A young architect died after rushing into a burning block of flats to try and save her fiance, an inquest heard. Sophie Rosser, 23, tried to raise the alarm when she saw the flat she shared with fiance Oscar Silva, 28, on the Isle of Dogs, East London, was on fire in August last year. Poplar Coroner's court heard Miss Rosser, who had been returning from a party in Chelsea, had phoned Mr Silva to say he should get out. Her body was found on the fourth floor and Mr Silva told the court he watched from the balcony, where he had fled from the smoke, as paramedics desperately tried to revive her. In a statement read to the court said: 'A cab dropped her off at 1.37 on Sunday morning and I was asleep. Sophie called me to say there was a fire and our flatmate and I should evacuate. 'The intercom sounded but I couldn't hear who it was. The stairwell was full of smoke so we couldn't get out. We went back into the flat. I rang Sophie at 1.43 but there was no

Forensic experts have successfully established the identities of two men that participated in the bombing  of  Nyanya, a satellite community bordering the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa State  on  April 14, 2014. Security sources told one of our correspondents in Abuja  on Monday  that the experts   identified  their  bodies  using certain scientific variables, including body tissues. It was learnt that they also   identified the third suicide bomber, who managed to escape from the scene before the explosion. One of the sources said, “The third terror suspect has also been positively identified and we are working to arrest him; but the identities of his two accomplices have been established through forensic analysis.  “Through the assistance of experts, we now know those who carried out the attack. Although two of them are dead, we are on the trail of the one who is alive.”

The decomposed body of a 40-year-old British man has been found by the side of a road in India. Roddick Andrew Reymond's body was discovered wrapped in a carpet inside a plastic bag in southern Delhi by passers-by. It was found outside a mobile repair shop on Church Road in Jangpura, where local people noticed a large, blue bag emanating a foul smell. Neveen, who lives in the neighbourhood, said: "Initially we thought it was a dead animal. We called the police and when they opened the bag they found a body of a man." A driver has died in a head-on collision moments after posting a Facebook selfie and status update from behind the wheel, telling friends how happy she was. Courtney Sanford added the post to her Facebook timeline at 8.33am as she drove to work. Police were called to the accident just one minute later. The 32-year-old's car crossed the central reservation and smashed into a recycling truck before bursting into flames.

South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hong-won has offered his resignation amid criticism of the government’s handling of the sinking of a passenger ferry. In a statement, a sombre Mr Chung said the “cries of the families of those missing still keep me up at night”. The Sewol ferry with 476 people on board – most of them students and teachers – sank off South Korea on 16 April. Officials have confirmed 187 died, but scores are missing presumed drowned. Furious relatives have repeatedly criticised what they see as the slowness of the recovery operation.
