WEMA Bank Customers Laments The New N50 Monthly Card Maintenance Charges Instead of N100 annual charges

Customers of WEMA Bank woke up to a new charges on the card maintenance fee which was formally N100 annually, but WEMA Bank said CBN has review the charges and customers will now cough out N50 monthly despite the fact that ATM charges of N1000 still apply.  This is a reap-off on Nigerians by CBN and WEMA Bank.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Tuesday said that the Federal Government through its agriculture empowerment programme had created new set of millionaires in farming. The minister stated this when he featured on a special edition of Channels TV programme, “Sunrise Daily” on the mid-term report of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. Lai Mohammed Mohammed said that many young farmers were empowered through the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrower Programme and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture’s Soil Map initiative. He said that the programme, which recorded huge success in rice and grain productions, particularly in Kebbi, Kano, Jigawa, Ebonyi and Sokoto states, had made farming attractive to young people. Mohammed said the initiative had also helped in boosting the local production of rice, increasing yields per hectares in grains production and reducing importation of rice. Drug overdose, not poison killed Adeleke, Coroner rules

The Coroner Inquest setup by the Osun State Government to investigate the cause of the sudden death of Senator Isiaka Adeleke in its verdict yesterday said the first civilian governor of the State died of drug overdose and not poison. Chief Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara, the coroner, said all evidence and accounts of witnesses before him indicated that Adeleke died of drug overdose, contrary to wide spread insinuation that the Senator was poisoned. Ayilara upheld the autopsy reports carried out on the late Adeleke at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo and the toxicology report on the late politician. The police have arraigned a businessman, Ahmed Echodo, for allegedly giving false information that a guesthouse belonging to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu was being used to store arms and ammunition. Echodo appeared in handcuff before Upper Area Court, Gudu, Abuja on Tuesday and was charged with “criminal conspiracy and giving false information to mislead public servants contrary to Sections 97(1) and 140 of the Penal Code.”

The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), has asked the Federal Government to obey court orders regarding the detention of embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.); and the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky. Sagay said this during an interview with our correspondent while reacting to calls by the Nigerian Bar Association for the release of Dasuki and El-Zakzaky. Woman locks housemaid in toilet for 20 days

For allegedly locking up her 14-year-old housemaid in a toilet for 20 days, a 34-year-old woman, Onyinye Chuks, was yesterday taken before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s court in Lagos State. Chuks, a trader, who resides at 19, Ojo Street, Shasha, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a four-count charge bordering on assault. The prosecutor, Sergeant Raphael Donny, told the court  the offences were committed between May 2 and 22 at the residence of the accused. Donny said that the accused alleged that the housemaid stole her money, beat her and “locked the girl inside her toilet, fed her once and didn’t allow her to take a bath or change her clothes for those weeks in bondage.

The police in Osun on Sunday said unknown assailants strangled to death an elderly couple in Gbongan area of the state. The spokeswoman of the police in the state, Mrs Folashade Odoro, said in a statement on Sunday that their bodies was found at about 11 am at their residence in Gbongan. Odoro said the son of the couple, Caleb Akanbi, reported the death of his parents to the police after he found them strangled.

Houses, shops submerged by flood in Ilorin

Many residential buildings and shops were submerged in Ilorin, Kwara State, following a heavy downpour in the early hours of Saturday. The heavy rain, which began around 10:00p.m., lasted about three hours and was accompanied by flood. While most of the houses flooded were built some metres away from the river bank, others affected were as a result of man-made situations. Many cars were either flooded or got stuck on the road owing to the large volume of water on roads. The asphalt on the road was also washed away by the flood.

18-yr-old boy rapes 8-yr-old sister in Katsina

An eight years old girl has been raped by her 18-year-old brother at Janbago Quarters, Katsina, Katsina State. Katsina Senior Magistrate Hajiya Falile Dikko, while passing a ruling on the case, directed that the teenager be remanded in prison custody for committing incest, till June 29 when his case will be mentioned before the court. The Police First Information Report, FIR, read in the court yesterday, revealed that the accused, early this month, lured his younger sister to a toilet inside one of the houses at the Steel Rolling Mills Estate, along Dutsin-ma Road, Katsina, and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her. The offence is said to be contrary to Section 390 of Penal Code.

A 38-year-old man, Yusuf Oriyomi, and his friend, Idowu Ayigoro, 42, were yesterday brought before an Ikeja chief magistrate’s court, for allegedly sexually assaulting Oriyomi’s 15- year-old daughter. The father is being tried for sexually assaulting his own daughter, while his friend was arraigned for alleged sexual assault on the same girl. The father, a baker, resides at 24, Ferry Close, and his friend, a carpenter, resides at Arabamo Street, both in Oworoshoki, a suburb of Lagos.

A Lagos-based businesswoman, Obiageli Emenike, who allegedly beat her eight-year-old maid, Miracle Edogwu, to death, was yesterday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s court, Lagos. She was, however, released on a N500,000 bail with two responsible sureties in like sum. The accused, 31, is facing a charge of beating her maid to death. She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Local government workers yesterday, vowed to ground government activities in Delta State if at the end of its ongoing statewide protest, government fails to settle over 12 months of unpaid salaries. The workers, under the state chapter of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, issued the threat after the council’s protest train marched through major streets of Warri, in Warri South Local Government Area, which hosted the protest. Activities at the usually busy Warri South Council secretariat were grounded as the council boss, Mofe Edema and other political officeholders of the council disappeared at the sight of the angry protesters, who stormed the secretariat. Court grants DSS motion to extend Ifeanyi Ubah's detention; Controversy as another High court orders DSS to release him

An FCT High Court sitting in Jabi has granted an exparte motion filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) to extend the detention of the Chairman of Capital Oil, Ifeanyi Ubah for a further period of 14 days. Justice Yusuf Halilu in his ruling today held that it is only fair in the interest of justice that the DSS be allowed further time to conclude it's investigation. The judge also earlier dismissed a motion on notice brought by Ubah asking for the court to vacate it's earlier exparte order granted on May 10 that allowed DSS to detain Ubah for 14 days.

Power can’t improve under current arrangement – Senators

The beleaguered power sector cannot improve under the current privatisation arrangement, senators said yesterday. After painting a glooming picture of the sector during yesterday’s session many senators concluded the only solution was to reverse the privatisation sale. They spoke during a debate on overbilling of electricity consumers by Distribution Companies (DISCOs). Senator Dino Melaye, who sponsored the motion, called for the overhauling of the sector. A 56-year-old man, Sunday Adimagwu, and his son, Kenneth, 21, were yesterday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s court and charged with defiling a 12-year-old girl. The father is being tried for defiling his own daughter, while the son was arraigned for allegedly defiling the same girl— his step-sister. Both the father, a driver, and the son, a trader, live at Ajangbadi, Okokomaiko, a suburb of Lagos, on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
