Trumps’ inauguration: The incoming president meets the outgoing president
Before the inauguration, Mr. Trump went to the White House to meet with President Obama, the 44th. The president met his successor on the gracious front steps on a red carpet and shortly thereafter, the first awkward moment came — Melania Trump handing Michelle Obama what looked like a large Tiffany and Co. box, and leaving the Obamas wondering what to do with it (and the world wondering what was in it.).
Mr. Trump then went to the Capitol and entered the carriage entrance with Mr. Obama, where he was greeted by Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, feet from the entrance to the Senate floor.
Mr. Trump was silent as Mr. Obama said hello.
Hillary Clinton, the woman who amassed nearly 3 million votes more than Mr. Trump on Election Day but lost in the Electoral College, was on hand with her husband, former President Bill Clinton, to watch the man who called her a “nasty woman” take the oath of office.
