Propose compulsory annual development levy N500 for primary school pupils and N1, 000 for secondary school students across the country

The federal government has argued for the payment of compulsory levy by students in primary and secondary schools across the country.  The levy was debated today at the 63rd ministerial session of the National Council Education, but it was not included in the communiqué from the session.

The compulsory annual development levy if approved would have been 500 naira for primary school pupils and one thousand naira for secondary school students across the country.

Minister of state for education, Anthony Anwukah, said the issue of the development fee by students will go through policy stages as the council deliberates on strategies and ways to increase funding.

He called for additional taxation for funding education in order to put an end to the underfunding in the sector.
