Fresh accident on Otedola bridge

Just opposite the scene of Thursday’s Lagos tanker fire accident, another car accident occurred on Friday, involving a yellow and black painted commercial bus and a white bus. According to the Rapid Response Squad, the accident occurred as a result of the recklessness of the Danfo driver who drove against traffic.  “Due to the driver’s speed, he hit the Toyota Hiace bus coming into Lagos on the Otedola Bridge,” police said.

A 41-year-old suspect, identified as Fidelis Nelson (aka MP), and leader of dare-devil robbery gang operating within Lagos and Ogun states, has revealed that he went into robbery to raise money to build his church. According to Nelson, a father of three, who spoke with Vanguard, “I have a pastoral calling; unfortunately I don’t have money to start my church. I have had the calling for years, but no finance to make it a reality.” Nelson, who has masterminded several robbery operations, also noted that he and members of his gang carried out three robbery operations recently. “We actually snatched three cars last month,” he added. Vanguard gathered that the gang met their waterloo on June 16, after the Police received information indicating that some robbers, who specialised in snatching cars in Ogun State, were bringing their loots to Lagos for sale, then laid ambush for them.

Photos reveal the horrendous conditions inside a three-bed home where 35 people were crammed inside and forced to sleep on mattresses stacked side by side. The London house is shown filled to the brim with young men who are surrounded by filth and rubbish. Landlord Ilie Florin Dragusin packed dozens of mattresses into the house, with some of the men forced to sleep in the back garden with just a canopy above their heads. He has now been jailed for 16 weeks after evicting them 35 men, changing the locks on the house and tossing out their belongings.  

Catholic priest suspended for using rap music to attract youths in church

A priest in Kenya has been suspended for misconduct after rapping in church. Fr Paul Ogalo had been using rap music to attract youths to Church and spread messages against drugs and in favour of social justice issues.  After Mass, Fr Ogalo would change from his vestments into a white shirt, black shorts, and a red bandana, begin to rap for the congregation, who danced along to the music. “We need to take care of the interests of youths in our churches,” he said. “We need to change the way we do things.” Church youth leader Violet Menya said not only do many young people come to church because of the rap music, they keep coming back. “We are happy that his style of preaching is attracting many youths to church. He has mentored very many youths to leave … drug abuse and embrace farming, business and other activities,” Menya said.

A 25-year-old man has allegedly been caught red-handed engaging in sex with his father’s wife in the bush. The situation took place at Mudzami Village under Huchu area in Gokwe, Zimbabwe, prompting Chief Nemangwe whose jurisdiction the area falls under to investigate, reports Bulawayo24. Reports say Bubbingeon Musekiwa Ndaba was allegedly hoodwinked into the unholy relationship with his 67-year-old father, Isaac Ndaba’s wife, Naume Langson. The matter came to light when the two were caught by their niece Bongani Ncube allegedly engaging in sex on a river bed. It is reported that before they were caught in the act, the two lovebirds were always taking to the bush to satisfy their sexual urge. After busting them, Ncube reportedly alerted Isaac and it was then that the matter was brought before Chief Nemangwe for hearing. It is alleged that after failing to buy Ncube’s silence, and in a bid to “fix “him, Langson lied to her husband that he (Ncube) once forced himself on her.

The embattled Rector of Igbajo Polytechnic, Akinola Olaolu, has been arrested and detained at the Ibadan office of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission. Our correspondent gathered that Olaolu was arrested on Friday by the agency for allegedly forging his certificates. It had been reported that there was a crisis at the Igbajo Polytechnic, a community-owned tertiary institution in Osun State, over the alleged fraudulent PhD certificate of the rector. Our correspondent had reported that Olaolu came into the school in December 2015 as a deputy rector. However, because he claimed to have a PhD in Economics from the University of Ibadan, he was made to replace the former rector, Tanimowo Oke. Man walks into own funeral as family buries wrong body

A 20-year-old man, Juan Penayo, surprised his grieving family when he walked into the funeral they were holding for him. The incident took place in Paraguay, in the village of Santa Teresa in the eastern department of Amambay, reports Mirror UK. Penayo returned home after he had been missing for several days and his family and friends suspected foul play. Police had earlier discovered the gruesome remains of a burned body that could not be identified and family members believed it was Penayo. As drug gangs operated in the area, they feared that he had become involved in trouble and killed. Organised crime specialist, Candido Figueredo, told local media that Penayo left his home on Thursday last week and had not come back.

Man crushed to death by mum’s coffin during funeral

A grieving man was crushed to death by his own mother’s coffin during her funeral procession. Samen Kondorura, 40, was carrying his mom Berta’s coffin during a service in Indonesia’s Parinding valley, in the North Toraja district. Dozens of onlookers were filmed watching the elaborate ceremony, as pallbearers made their way up a wooden ladder. They waited for a brief moment, waiting for helpers to dress the lakkian, a tower where the deceased is placed. As they resumed the procession, one pallbearer missed his step shifting the ladder, which collapsed almost immediately. Dozens were sent flying onto the ground, with horrified onlookers screaming and rushing to Kondorura’s aid.

Lekki doctor flogs, orders nurse to kneel down

A doctor in the Lekki area of Lagos State, Dr Emmanuel Okolo, has been accused of brutalising a nurse, Dorcas Adeyera. The incident happened at the Awoyaya Hospital and Maternity Centre, Ibeju Lekki. Okolo and Adeyera’s misunderstanding stemmed from the treatment of a patient rushed into the medical facility in the early hours of Monday. Okolo was alleged to have frowned on the admission of the accident victim without his consent, blaming Adeyera for the action.  The medical doctor allegedly summoned the 23-year-old into his office and ordered her to kneel down. When the victim refused, 35-year-old Okolo was alleged to have dealt her several slaps and also flogged her with a belt. Adeyera, in her report to the medical director of the hospital, said she was humiliated by Okolo. The report read in part, “Around 2am, there was an emergency outside the hospital. Over 70% LASU Budget spent on Diesel – LASU VC

The Lagos State University (LASU) says it spent more than 70 percent of its annual budget on purchase of diesel due to epileptic power supply to the institution. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, the vice-chancellor of the university, made this known in an interview with NAN on Tuesday. Fagbohun said poor power supply was not peculiar to the university but all sectors of the country. He expressed concern at the rate the university was spending the chunk of its budget on diesel. “If we have spent over 70 per cent of the annual budget on diesel alone within six months of the year, I wonder how we would manage the university with the remaining 30 percent for the remaining months,” he said.

Senator: President is being dishonest

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other financial institutions, Rafiu Ibrahim (APC, Kwara) has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement that over 6,403 projects were introduced into the budget at the National Assembly. Reacting in a phone interview, Ibrahim said: “Why did he sign it? If he has so much reservations, he shouldn’t have signed it. He cannot continue to disparage the integrity of the National Assembly. “We will not agree with our leadership to continue to bend backward for the President. Now he is talking as if it was our doing which is very dishonest of the President. In fact, I’m very disappointed in the President who we so much hold in high esteem. “All the amendments done to the budget were in consonance with the executive. The adjustment was based on benchmark and the details are available.”

2018 Budget difficult to implement with NASS’ alterations, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday lamented that the 2018 Appropriation Bill which he signed into law would be difficult, if not impossible, to implement because of the alterations members of the National Assembly effected on the document he submitted to them on November 7, 2017. He accused the federal lawmakers of, among others, increasing the National Assembly budget from N125bn to N139.5bn, without any discussion with the Executive. The President also accused them of injecting 6,403 projects of their own totalling N578bn into the national budget while making cuts amounting to N347bn in the allocations to 4,700 projects as submitted to them.

The Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has dismissed Prof. Richard Akindele for alleged involvement in a sex-for-marks scandal. OAU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, announced Akindele’s dismissal in a statement yesterday in Ile-Ife. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the vice chancellor, on April 19, confirmed Akindele’s suspension pending the findings of an investigative panel. Miss Monica Osagie, a student in the Masters of Business programme, had released a recorded telephone conversation, which went viral, in which the lecturer, identified as Akindele, demanded five rounds of sex to enhance her marks. Ogunbodede said the university’s Senate, at its meeting on June 14, considered the committee’s finding that Akindele had an inappropriate relationship with his student.

FG shouldn’t build ranches with public funds —Southern, Middle-Belt leaders

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum has said it is opposed to the use of public funds to set up ranches in 10 states as announced by the Federal Government, describing the decision as vexatious. It insisted that cattle rearing is a private business, noting that the government should not spend N178bn public funds to establish ranches for herdsmen who the forum said “are private businessmen without a record of paying taxes.” The forum stated this in a statement on Wednesday in response to the declaration by the National Economic Council that the government had approved a 10-year National Livestock Plan which would cost about N179bn. About N70bn of the budget will be disbursed between now and the expiration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s first tenure in 2019 for the establishment of ranches in Oyo, Benue, Nasarawa and seven other states.

Wife urges court to compel husband to pay her antenatal bills

A six-month-old pregnant woman, Abubakar Rabi, on Wednesday urged a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court to compel her husband, Abdullahi Saleh, who had allegedly deserted her, to pay her antenatal bills and feeding allowance. ‎ Rabi told the court that they got married under Islamic Law on April 29, 2017, and had been living in Kubwa, Abuja until he relocated to Nasarawa State. She said that on May 24, Saleh gave her a letter of divorce, which was the second divorce letter since they got married and packed out of their matrimonial home to live in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

Buhari deserves no praise over June 12 declaration - Sowore, Agbakoba

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Campaign Organization has declared that there is no contention for the presidency considering the caliber of persons eyeing the position. The South South leader of the campaign organization, Honourable Tare Amatare made the assertion in Warri when he spoke with newsmen on Wednesday. Amatare, while stating that he intends to to take the campaign to the interiors, including the creeks, of the Niger Delta, mocked the popularity of other contestants in their own hometowns. FEC approves N185b for 14 roads

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday approved N185. 276 billion for rehabilitation, construction and repairs of 14 roads. Special Adviser on Media and publicity to the President Femi Adesina, who briefed reporters after the meeting, was accompanmied by Minister of Health Prof. Isaac Adewole, Minister of Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah and Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami. He listed the roads as “Gwoza – Damboa – Goniri – Ngamdu Road in Yobe/Borno States by Hajaig Construction Nigeria Ltd. at the cost of N34.608 billion, Mayo Belwa – Jada – Ganye – Torngo Road in Adamawa by Messrs Triacta Nigeria Ltd. at the rate of N22.699bn.

NLC kicks as Mimiko dumps PDP, returns to LP today

A former Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and is set to officially return to Labour Party today. But the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has kicked against the plan, saying Mimiko should remain in PDP. In a three paragraph letter addressed to the secretariat of the PDP, yesterday, and copies made available to newsmen in his Ondo home, Dr Mimiko said he took the decision based on some well thought out personal reasons. The owner of a Ford Explorer SUV with registration number Lagos APP190CE seen on a viral video allegedly belonging to a woman who jumped into Lagos lagoon has denied the video clip. In a telephone conversation with Daily Trust in Lagos, the woman said that her husband who drove the car on the said day (Sunday) didn't jump into the Lagoon, stressing that he parked the Ford car by the Bridge to offer help. The woman said she and her husband are living well and happily and have no cause to consider suicide. She said her husband has reported what transpired at the Bridge to the appropriate government authorities. However, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on Tuesday dismissed trending video clip of a woman who allegedly parked her SUV Ford Explorer and jumped into the lagoon at the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

Nigerian pharmacist in Chicago kills wife, daughter, commits suicide

A Chicago-based Nigerian pharmacist, Olasunkanmi Esho, has allegedly killed his Cameroonian wife, Bourk Esho, and their eight-year-old daughter, Olivia. Olasunkanmi, 42, who lived in Ilinois, Chicago, in the United States of America, was alleged to have also shot himself dead after the incident.  It is not clear if the couple had any disagreement prior to the incident. The Chicago Tribune reported that the Darien Police Department had started investigations into the tragedy which happened in an apartment building on 75th Street, Farmingdale Drive.

CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE: 17-month-old boy struggles to live, needs N2m lifeline

A 17-month- old baby boy in Ondo State, Ayomide Adebayo, has been diagnosed of cyanotic congenital heart disease. His parents are, therefore, appealing to kind-hearted Nigerians to donate N2m to him for a heart surgery. According to an x-ray report from Union Diagnostic and Clinical Services, Akure, dated March 3, 2018, Adebayo was diagnosed of congenital heart disease. This indicated that “there is cardiomegaly of multi-chamber configuration and left ventricular preponderance. “No focal or diffuse lung lesion is seen. Both costophrenis salci are intact. Normal overlaying rib cage and soft tissues”, the report said.

Buhari leaves Nigeria for Morocco on Sunday

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Sunday embark on a two-day working visit to the Kingdom of Morocco. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.  Shehu said the visit, which is at the invitation of King Mohammed VI, would see the two leaders discuss socio-economic matters affecting their countries, following prior engagements in December 2016, during the king’s official visit to Nigeria.

A Ghanaian minister, Simon Osei Mensah, has asked petty traders in the Kumasi metropolis to venture into the sale of cocaine if they cannot withstand the economic hardship in the country.  He said traders who are using economic hardship as an excuse to sell at unauthorised places must rethink their decision because persons who break the law will face justice, reports Citinewsroom on Wednesday. “When we start enforcing the laws, people will be complaining of hardship. Auto mechanic sneaks into workshop at night, steals N277,000 truck parts

An auto mechanic, Peace Patrick, was on Friday charged with stealing truck parts valued at N277,000 at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. Patrick, 28, had sneaked into the workshop at night to steal the parts, according to the prosecution. The accused, who resides at Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for stealing. He had pleaded not guilty to the charge but Police Sgt. Godwin Awase, insisted that the accused committed the offence on May 30 at Katangowa Garage, Abule-Egba. He alleged that the accused stole the parts of a truck valued at N277,000 belonging to Mr Samsondeen Agbon, the complainant. Awase told the court that the accused also vandalized the truck parked at his workshop for repairs.

A medical doctor, Kainos Taruvinga, fed up with telling his ex-wife, Chenjerai Chai, that their relationship was over, hatched a plan to end the relationship by “hiring” aspiring boyfriends to propose to her in order to shift her focus off him. Through this method, Taruvinga was able to distance himself from his ex-wife, Chai, reports Zimbabwe’s B Metro on Friday. The relationship between the Taruvinga and Chai started off on a patient-doctor note, before they decided to date. The two started an affair and ended up getting married. Things did not go as planned as they both realised that they were not perfect for each other. This forced Taruvinga to move out of the house, leaving Chai with their two-month-old child in 2016. Taruvinga wanted nothing to do with Chai and stopped looking after their daughter. Falana tackles Justice Belgore over MKO, Gani awards

Human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), has disagreed with a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alfa Belgore, for saying President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to bestow posthumus awards on Chief MKO Abiola and Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) was illegal. Falana, in a statement on Thursday, said although paragraph 2 of the National Honours Act presupposed that a person who might be bestowed with a national award must receive it in person, paragraph 3 gave the President the power to give it to a representative of the beneficiary. The senior advocate, who was an active participant in the struggle for the actualisation of the June 12 mandate, therefore, faulted the retired judge for taking the law out of context. He said, “With profound respect to the honourable Justice Alfa Belgore, the National Honours Act has not prohibited or restricted the powers of the President to confer national honours on deserving Nigerian citizens, dead or alive.

Suspected cultists name Ogun lawmaker as sponsor

Four persons suspected to be members of a secret cult, have been arrested by the police for allegedly shooting and killing one person, identified as Arsenal-Nice in Sagamu, Ogun State. The suspects – Olushola Adedeji; Olusegun Olalekan, aka Musket;Azeez aka Anene; and Abolore, aka A.B, were arrested by the operatives of the Zonal Intervention Squad, Obada, Abeokuta. Their arrest followed a complaint lodged at the ZIS that the suspects allegedly shot Arsenal-Nice dead. It was learnt that the suspects allegedly named the member representing the Sagamu Constituency 1, Yinka Mafe, as their sponsor. But in a swift reaction, Mafe, who is also the majority leader in the state House of Assembly, denied the allegation.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to quit the stage now that it has become evident that he cannot hold the government and the country together. Secondus said this in a statement signed on his behalf by his Media Adviser, Ike Abonyi, in Abuja, on Wednesday. He said this in a reaction to resolutions passed by the National Assembly after an executive session on Tuesday. The lawmakers had threatened to invoke their constitutional powers on the President if a number of constitutional infringements were not quickly addressed. Secondus said there was no further confirmation to the fact that the President was presiding over a collapsed administration.

Crocodile Kills Pastor During Water Baptism In Ethiopia

A lakeside baptism ended in disaster when a huge crocodile leapt from the water and mauled the pastor to death in front of horrified crowds in Ethiopia, according to reports. The pastor, named locally as Docho Eshete, was killed after the large reptile clamped down on his legs, back and hands during the baptism at Lake Abaya in the Merkeb Tabya district. He was conducting the ceremony for about 80 people before the animal sprung out of the water and attacked him in front of the terrified congregation on Sunday morning, the BBC reported.

The award of Nigeria’s highest national honour to late Moshood Abiola is illegal, says a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Alfa Belgore. President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday evening named Mr Abiola, winner of 1993 presidential election that was annulled by former dictator Ibrahim Babangida, a holder of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR, 20 years after his death in 1998. Alfa Belgore, CJN from 2006-2007, said the national honours cannot be awarded posthumously, much less the GCFR, which is the highest honour in the land.

Two females disappear with landlady’s children in Edo

There was pandemonium yesterday at Utese village, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, after two female tenants identified as Mercy and Rose disappeared with two of their landlord’s children. The children—four-year-old Amada and two-year-old Christabel—were said to have been left in the custody of the tenants by their mother, who went to the stream to wash her clothes. The tenants, who hail from Cross River State, were said to have moved to the community about three weeks ago and told their landlord that they do farm work and also engaged in hair dressing.  However, when villagers could not find them and decided to break into their rooms, it was discovered that they took their few belongings and disappeared.

My husband planted `magun’ on me, wife tells court

Rashidat Adesokan, a mother of six, on Wednesday asked a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan to dissolve her 28- year-old marriage to her husband, Mustafa, for allegedly “lacing her with “magun’’ charm. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that magun is believed to be a potent charm among the Yoruba deployed to cause harm or even death to a promiscuous partner and the lover. Rashidat, in her petition to the court, said her husband had ruined her life as a result of the charm. “My lord, ever since we moved to our newly completed building, Mustafa has been a pain on my neck by denying me adequate care and love. “He makes no provision for the children and I because I have been soley responsible for the upkeep of the children. “Worst of all, Mustafa had on four different occasions laced me with magun such that blood has been discharging from my genitals.

UNIOSUN workers protest, call for VC’s removal

Some employees of the Osun State University and their counterparts from some public universities in the South West, including the University of Ibadan, on Wednesday staged a protest against alleged high handedness and abuse of office by the Vice Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Prof. Labode Popoola. The workers, who gathered at the main gate of the university sang anti-management songs and called for the removal of the vice chancellor who they also accused of corruption.  The protesting workers later moved from the university through the Osogbo Township Stadium to the popular Olaiya Junction where they stopped and sang for about 20 minutes before they moved towards the Governor’s Office. The protesters, who displayed placards with various anti-management inscriptions were members of the Senior Staff Association of Universities; National Association of Academic Technologists and Non Academic Staff Union.

Man drags neighbour to court over noisy grinding machine

A 35-year-old man, Auwal Kasimu, on Tuesday dragged his neighbour, Bilkisu Abdullahi to court over alleged uncontrolled noise from her grinding machine. Kasimu told the court that, Bilkisu, who is his uncle’s wife, was causing his hypertensive mother more stress by continuously using the noisy grinding machine in their compound. According to him, his mother was mandated by a medical doctor to rest in a peaceful environment but that is allegedly being thwarted by the noisy machine.  “She doesn’t have any specific time for grinding, she puts on the machine at any time of the day,” the complainant told the court.

FG can’t abrogate our Anti-Grazing Law —Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Chief Ayodele Fayose, has said the Federal Government lacks the power to suspend or abrogate the Anti-grazing Law enacted by the state government to prohibit open grazing of cattle in the state. He stated this in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, while reacting to the statement by the Minister of Defence that the application of the law be suspended by state governments. Fayose hinged his submission on the fact that the country is a federation and that Ekiti is one of the federating units and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is clear on what each unit can legislate on.

We spent N2.75tn on power, roads in two years – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari said on Monday that his administration had spent $9bn (N2.745tn at the official exchange rate of N305 to $1) on power, roads and railways in the country in the last two years. The President said this was part of the ongoing plans to diversify the economy through the development of tourism, agriculture and solid minerals, noting that the Federal Government was investing heavily in infrastructure. Buhari made these remarks at the 61st meeting of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation and Commission for Africa in Abuja. The President stated that as part of his administration’s social investment programmes, the government was giving N5,000 monthly to some 297,973 poor homes in the country.

A pastor with Rhema Pentecostal Church International, Ijeoma Okoli, has lost her 11-year-old marriage as the Agege Customary Court dissolved the union. The marriage between Ijeoma and her husband, Ifeanyi Okoli, was dissolved over domestic violence.  Thirty-six-year-old Ijeoma told the court that she was fed up with her husband’s character. She said, “My husband was aggressive, untrustworthy and troublesome. I want peace, l don’t want any problem in my life, the court should end our marriage as I don’t love him again.”

He refused to pay after service, tried to kill me – Commercial sex worker

A commercial sex worker has revealed how a client almost killed her after he had sex with her and refused to pay in her hotel room in Ajagbandi area of Lagos State. Faith & Chizoba According to the ‘worker,’ 18-year-old Faith Nuel, the incident happened on May 24, 2018. She said: “I was in my hotel room when a customer, Chizoba Ayogu, entered and we bargained. After sex, I was surprised that the man tried to suffocate me with my pillow. “He blocked my nostrils and my mouth with the pillow. He later tied a rope around my neck and hung me. If not for the timely intervention of some of the hotel staff who rescued me, I would have died.” Vanguard gathered that last Thursday, the Police received a distress call from a hotel in Ajangbadi. An officer immediately went there with a team of policemen, where he met Faith Nuel with injuries on her neck.

Senator Alhassan, popularly known as ‘Mama Taraba’ said this yesterday at the APC national secretariat in Abuja shortly after the inauguration of 35 state chairmen of the party. She said the forthcoming national convention would be peaceful despite the current crisis in the APC. The minister had last year said she would resign from the federal cabinet once President Muhammadu Buhari announced that he would go for a second term, saying she would remain loyal to ex- Vice President Atiku Abubakar who had already moved back to the PDP.
