Make calls at filling stations, go to jail — Police

The police have said that making phone calls at filling stations is a criminal offence which could land the offender in jail. The Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, stated that an offender could be prosecuted and jailed for attempted arson. He noted that police officers have the authority to arrest anyone found making phone calls or smoking at filling stations.

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has called on the Federal Government to end the current fuel scarcity in the country rather than buying time and passing blame. Soyinka stated this on Saturday in a statement titled, “Blame passing: The New Year Gift to a Nation.’’ He also cited the clipping of the 1977 edition of the Daily Times when President Muhammadu Buhari, then a minister of petroleum and natural resources, was quoted as saying, “Fuel crisis may be over next year.”

FG to stem job loses in 2018, says Ngige

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige has assured Nigerians that the government is doing everything possible to stem job loses, while creating new ones in 2018. The National Bureau of Statistics recently said that about four million Nigerians lost their jobs in 2017, an information that has led to wide criticism of the Buhari led APC government that promised to create three million jobs per annum. In his new year message, Ngige asked Nigerians not to worry over the recent statistics on job losses released by the National Bureau of Statistics(NBC) as the development is effectively modulated by a similar release by the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) which indicates over a Seven Million job growth in the Agricultural sector during the year.

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has lauded the sacrifices of civil servants who endured financial constraints during the recently concluded state’s civil service reforms. Bello gave the commendation in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Petra Onyegbule, in Lokoja on Sunday to mark the New Year celebration. Passengers stranded inside bush as Kano-bound train breaks down

A train traveling to Kano state from Lagos state has developed faults in a forest outside Osogbo, capital of Osun State, leaving passengers stranded. Majority of the passenger on the train were going to Kano to celebrate the New Year with their family members and that there was no hope for them to continue the journey. One of the train passages who is a member of the National Youth Service Corps told our correspondent that since the train developed the fault, the officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation in the train did not act in a responsible manner and that the passengers were exposed to danger in the bush.

No big deal about 'controversial' list of board appointments- Presidency

Garba Shehu The presidency has said there was no big deal about the controversy being generated by the inclusion of dead persons' names on the list of appointees into the boards of agencies and parastatals. The federal government had on Friday evening, announced the appointment of 1,468 Nigerians into the boards. But checks revealed duplication names, inclusion of names of dead persons and individuals who are no longer in the ruling All Progressives Congress.

A woman, Adenike Bello has approached Oja Oba/Mapo  Court  C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking the dissolution of her 11-year-old marriage to her husband, Sheriff Bello. Adenike in her suit alleged that her husband was irresponsible and indifferent to their welfare. She added that he was a brute who sought every opportunity at beating her. The plaintiff stated before the court that she has had enough of her husband’s maltreatment and thus prayed it to terminate their union and grant her custody of their three children. Ex-governor Adebayo, Keyamo, Arise, others get board appointments

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday approved the constitution of the Governing Boards of agencies and parastatals, under some ministries. According to a statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the President also appointed some Nigerians to fill the board positions, including 209 chairmen and 1,258 members. The statement read, “Mr. President considered the approval for the constitution of the boards as well as the appointments, very necessary, so as to provide a proper governance and oversight structure for government agencies and parastatals.

The police in Louisiana has arrested an American advance fee fraudster posing as a Nigerian prince. The police in a facebook post said the fake Nigerian prince has duped hundreds of people across America using emails. According to The Sacramento Bee anyone with an email address has likely gotten a message from the so-called Nigerian prince or two offering hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars in secret inheritances or, in some cases, payment for assistance laundering ill-gotten gains from mining conglomerates or royal treasuries. Police in Slidell, Louisiana, say they finally caught up with one of the people behind some of those emails. He’s not exactly Nigerian royalty, either, police wrote in a Facebook post.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday was back at the Cedar Crest Hospital, Gudu District, Abuja, where his son, Yusuf, who was injured in a motorbike accident, was hospitalised. The President, who got there around 6pm, had on Thursday alongside his wife and Yusuf’s mother, Aisha, visited the hospital. Buhari appoints dead police chief, priest as board members

Late Senator Francis Okpozo is not the only dead person, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed onto governing boards of agencies and para state agencies on Friday, checks show. The president  named "eminently qualified Nigerians" to fill the board positions, numbering 209 chairmen and 1,258 members.   Among them is Okpozo, who died December 26 last year in Benin City, now appointed to chair the board of the Nigerian Press Council.

Hurray! Doctors Can Now Treat Gunshot Wounds Without Police Report

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday signed six bills including the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017 and the Niger Delta Development Commission (Establishment) Amendment Act, 2017 into laws. Sen. Ita Enang, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), made this known to State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday. According to him, the Gunshot Act specifically stipulates that a person with gunshot shall be received for immediate and adequate treatment by any hospital in Nigeria with or without initial monetary deposit.

NNPC, not FG, bears cost of subsidy - Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) bears the cost of fuel subsidy and not the federal government. NAN reports that the vice-president clarified this on Monday while answering questions from journalists after visiting the Oando and Total depot in Apapa, Lagos. “NNPC is trading in fuel; the federal government is not, at the moment, paying for any subsidy. NNPC is trading,” he said.

‘Every day, FG spends N15m to fuel fighter jets’ — Lai Muhammed defends $1bn insurgency fund

Minister of information and culture,  Lai Mohammed,  says the federal government spends N15m daily to fuel the fighter jets used in the Boko Haram war. Mohammed said this in defence of the approval of $1bn from the excess crude account (ECA) for the war against insurgency. He said the aircraft consume 64,021.08 litres of fuel per day amounting to N15.153m daily.   The minister said N20.19 million was spent on spares for the aircraft between January and November.

Buhari spoke when the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Muhammed Bello, led a delegation to pay him Christmas homage at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The President, joined by some state governors and other top government officials, celebrated his 75th birthday penultimate Sunday. He was said to have been born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, in present day Katsina State.

A housewife, Dausiya Abdulmuminu, 15, arrested by the Katsina Police Command for allegedly poisoning her husband, Samilu Usman, said she put rat poison in the 27-year-old husband’s food because she never loved him. The husband died alongside an eight-year-old, Mohammed Abdulmumini.  The teenage wife, who was paraded by the police on Saturday, told newsmen that she was forced into a marriage with Usman by her uncle. According to her, the late husband was involved in a car accident two weeks after the wedding, a development, she claimed, made him to suffer mental imbalance.

Petrol subsidy now N26 per liter - NNPC

Petrol is being subsidised to the tune of N26 per litre, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Managing Director Maikanti Baru said yesterday. According to him, the landing cost of petrol (PMS) is N171 per litre;  it is being sold at the pump at N145 per litre – a difference of N26. Baru told reporters in Abuja that the consumption of PMS had risen to over 50 million litres per day, due to hoarding and diversion. He said the product was being smuggled across the borders because of the price disparity that exists between Nigeria and the neighbouring countries.

Trouble, however, started for the mother of two following Isaac’s refusal to pay her the agreed sum after having sex with her in his one-room apartment at 4, Kilanko Street, White Sand, Isheri Oshun.

Stepmother burns hungry two-year- old’s genitals over moin-moin

An Abuja-based couple, Ayo and Khadijat Yahaya, are cooling their heels in the custody of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other related offences for allegedly burning the private parts of their two-year-old son in the Kuje area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. NAPTIP operatives told our correspondent on Sunday that the couple would spend the Christmas holidays in the cell, after which they would be arraigned in court on Wednesday. Our correspondent learnt that the couple, 43-year-old Ayo and Khadijat, 30, were nabbed by the NAPTIP’s Rapid Response Squad in the early hours of Saturday after a tip-off.

Jonathan’s ex-campaign chief forfeits 38 houses

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced 38 choice houses to a former Chairman of the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Dr. Ngozi Olojeme. Mrs Olojeme, Deputy Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Goodluck Campaign Organisation in 2015, is being investigated by the EFCC for alleged diversion of $48,485,127 from the accounts of the NSITF. Of N62.3billion fraud discovered in NSITF, $48,485,127 is allegedly credited to Mrs. Olojeme.   The anti- graft agency has secured a court order to place the assets under interim forfeiture, pending Mrs. Olojeme’s trial.

Nasarawa State Govt. increases minimum pension to N5, 000 – Official

Umaru Al-Makura  Mr Abdullahi Sani-Oseze, the Director-General, Nasarawa State Pension Bureau, has said that the State Government, had increased the minimum pension of retirees to N5, 000. Sani-Oseze made this disclosure in Lafia on Saturday in an interview. He said that the government made the adjustment in order to make life more meaningful for pensioners, in view of the prevailing economic realities in the country. The Director-General said some workers, who retired from active service before the implementation of minimum wage in the state, were receiving as low as N1, 000 as their monthly pension.

NNPC says fuel queues will disappear by weekend

T he Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Thursday in Abuja says fuel queues will `normalise’ by Friday and disappear by weekend. Mr Ndu Ughamadu, the NNPC spokesman, said this in Abuja that there was an increase in the number of incoming trucks of petrol into the FCT to curb the queues in the city. According to him, the NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr Maikanti Baru, has met with the heads of Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and Petrol Tanker Drivers (PTD) to nip the problem in the bud.

A 19-year-old woman has narrated to operatives of Lagos State Police Command how her ‘Madam’ assaults her daily, while the husband sodomises her at night. The Lagos-based couple is currently being investigated by the Police over physical and sexual abuse of the maid at their Aunty Toyin Street, Kodeibo Estate, Isheri-Oshun, Lagos. The victim, Blessing Joseph, who has been working with the couple for six months, hails from Imo State. Throughout her stay with the couple, Blessing was subjected to different forms of physical abuse from her madam, Isioma, and sexual abuse from the madam’s husband, Chigozie Ezeafor. General Overseer forged documents to change trustees – Witness

One of the leaders of the Christian Charismatic Ministries, Mr. Innocent Nwangwu, has told an Enugu Magistrate Court that the General Overseer, Pastor Sabinus Onuigbo, forged documents to change the church’s Board of Trustees after he was suspended for alleged misconduct. Onuigbo, the General Overseer of the Christian Charismatic Ministries, is facing trial before the magistrates court for alleged forgery. The GO and five senior pastors of the church – Tony Chukwu, Chukwuma Orji, Nick Nwoye and Tony Ike – were accused of conspiring to commit forgery, an offence punishable under Section 495 (a) of the Criminal Code, cap. 30, Vol. 11, Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004. According to the charge sheet in the suit numbered CME/56C/2017, Onuigbo and the other accused persons, on or about July 16, 2014, and August 10, 2014, allegedly used forged documents to apply to the Corporate Affairs Commission to change the trustees of the church.

Police arrest man with bag of stolen phones at ‘The Experience’ concert in Lagos

While thousands of Nigerians were singing and praising God at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos State, during the House on the Rock’s sponsored gospel concert, ‘The Experience,’ a man, Lateef Nurudeen, had a different plan. According to the police, Nurudeen, who pretended to be a worshipper, was arrested with seven mobile phones belonging to some participants at the event. The 19-year-old, who was said to be in company with six other persons, was arrested by men of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command with a bag where the stolen phones were found.
