Meet Ivy Taylor, the first African-American to be elected as mayor of San Antonio, TX.
Appointed as interim mayor last summer,
Taylor defeated former state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte in the runoff election
Saturday. She won the election with 52 percent of the vote.
“The work starts on Monday at City Hall.
We come together now as a city,” Taylor said in her victory speech.
According to San Antonio Current, the
newly elected mayor will tackle big-ticket projects like body cameras for the
police department, a water bottling plant, and millions of dollars worth of
street and sidewalk improvements. Other issues on the table include bringing a
Major League Soccer team to San Antonio and appointing members to carry out
responsibilities of the Gentrification Task Force.
Last July, Taylor was on the San Antonio
City Council when fellow members voted to appoint her as interim mayor to
replace Julian Castro, who is now serving as secretary of the U.S. Department
of Housing and Urban Development.
Van de Putte is unsure of the next steps
in her political career, but she said she plans to spend more time with her
family for now.
