PDP chiefs knock Aregbesola for raising airport contract by N58bn

Some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State have flayed Governor Rauf Aregbesola over the increase in the contract sum of the state’s airport from N11bn to N69bn. A member of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Osun State, Mr. Bamidele Salam, in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Monday, described the increase of the contract sum through a concession agreement, which will last 30 years, as a “highly suspicious transaction.” Salam said, “This is one senseless, needless and highly suspicious transaction that the state government is entering into. For a government which has not been able to provide potable water, good road network, functional education and affordable health care, going into this highly exorbitant project is the height of rudderlessness.

The Osun State Police Command has paraded a 29-year-old boy, Kehinde Ariyo who raped an 85-year-old woman in Ilesa, Osun State. The Commissioner of in the state, Mr Fimihan Adeoye who paraded the suspect said that Ariyo raped the aged woman until she passed out. The CP said the woman was later resuscitated at a hospital.

According to a South African news website, Daily Live, John said his girlfriend’s husband immediately forgave him after receiving the gift. “I know what I did is wrong but I feel better he has accepted my gift. He accepted that his wife – my girlfriend – is pregnant and would soon give birth to my son. He was angry at first but when I presented the car to him, his anger vanished,” John explained.

Court refuses to revoke MTN’s operating licence over N1.40trn fine

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, declined to compel MTN Nigeria Communications Limited to pay into the federation account the total sum of N1.40trillion, being the fine that was imposed on it by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC. The court equally refused to issue an order of mandamus to compel NCC to perform its statutory obligation under section 45(1) (a) (b) and (c) of the Nigeria Communications Act, by revoking MTN’s operation license, pending when it paid the fine. In a judgment that was delivered by Justice Babatunde Quadri, the court dismissed the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/448/2016, which queried powers of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, and the Minister of Communications Technology, Adebayo Shittu to reduce the fine imposed on MTN to N780billion.

A burst up between a couple, Alade Muniru and his wife Sadiat, over the removal of a telephone battery has resulted to the collapse of their 18-year-old marriage. A housewife, Sadiat Abas, on Friday, told an Idi-Ogungun Customary Court at Agodi, Ibadan, that her husband Abiola Abas, always stabbed her with broken bottles, each time they quarreled. Abiola had urged the court to dissolve his 22 year-old marriage to Sadiat, citing constant fighting and defiant attitude. Sadiat, in her defence, said her husband never treated her as a loving wife but always broke bottles to stab her whenever they had a quarrel. She further said that the petitioner had succeeded in turning their four children against her.

Senator Ali Ndume has denied allegation of slapping a member of the Borno House of Assembly, Bukar Daja-Ali, representing Damboa at a political gathering in Maiduguri. Sen. Ladoja Joins PDP Chairmanship Race

A former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, has joined the race for the national chairmanship of the Peoples Democratic Party. Ladoja returned to the party a few weeks ago.  He left the party to join Accord about eight years ago. The constitution of the party stipulates that a member of the party will need to remain a member for two consecutive years before he could contest any elective election.

Doctors baffled as woman sweats blood

Doctors have been left perplexed by a 21-year-old Italian woman with no gashes or skin lesions with years of sweating blood from her face and the palms of her hands. The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abukabar Malami SAN has disclosed that “President Muhammadu Buhari has directed all relevant agencies to compile documents on names of all looters with a view to promptly enforcing the judgment of a Federal High Court in Lagos ordering the government to release to Nigerians information about the names of high ranking public officials from whom public funds were recovered.” The court also ordered the government to tell Nigerians the circumstances under which funds were recovered, as well as the exact amount of funds recovered from each public official. No $25bn NNPC contract missing – Presidency

Kebbi suspends immunisation due to lack of marker pens

The Kebbi State Government on Monday suspended the polio immunisation exercise meant to commence across the 225 wards of its 21 local government areas due to lack of marker pens. Immunization exercise in Kebbi The National Polio Immunisation (NPI) Manager for Birnin-Kebbi Local Government, Alhaji Bello Umar, confirmed the suspension in an interview with newsmen after the flag-off of the exercise at the Deputy Governor’s residence in Kebbi. Road construction: Ogun paid N4bn compensation in 6 years – commissioner

Gov. Ibikunle Amosun The Ogun Government on Monday said that it paid over N4 billion compensation the last six years to property owners whose structures were demolished for ongoing road construction. Mr Olamilekan Adegbite, the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, disclosed this on Monday during an oversight visit by the State Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure to the ministry in Abeokuta. Adegbite said that the ministry needed additional N4 billion to complete the payment, saying that efforts were in top gear to pay other property owners yet to be compensated. He said that the ministry spent over N11 billion on road construction in all parts of the state between January and August.

Man bags 5 years jail term for stealing tricycle

A Kano Magistrates’ Court, on Monday, sentenced a 32-year-old man, Musa Sale, to five years imprisonment for stealing a tricycle worth N450,000. Musa, who resides at Kwana Hudu Quarters Kano, was convicted on a two-count charge of joint act and theft, contrary to Sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code. The convict, who pleaded guilty to the charge, urged the judge to temper justice with mercy. In his judgment, Senior Magistrate Aminu Fagge, held that the court had taken into account the fact that the convict was a first time offender.

Over 29 killed in fresh Plateau attack

No fewer than 29 people mostly women and children were in the early hours of Monday killed during an attack in Nkiedonwhro village of Irigwe chiefdom in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State. Electricity tariff may increase by 61.5% soon

The tariff payable by electricity consumers may increase by 61.5 per cent any time soon following the latest revelation by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Friday that it was waiting for a final approval from the Federal Government before implementing the new rate. According to NERC, the actual tariff for one kilowatt-hour of power is meant to be N51, as against the current unit cost of N31.58 for which electricity distribution companies are selling the commodity.

UNILAG lecturer stabs postgraduate student

A postgraduate student (English Language) of the University of Lagos, Jimi Fatunbi, has been allegedly injured by two lecturers. Fatunbi said he was slapped and stabbed by the lecturers at about midnight on Wednesday at Faculty of Education roundabout. He identified the lecturers as Dr. BabawaleTaiwo and Dr. Israel Abiala, who lecture at the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics; and Arts and Social Sciences Education respectively.

Court orders interim forfeiture of Paris Club and London Club loans in Banks custody

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday, issued an order directing Access Bank Plc and Guaranty Trust Ltd to surrender N1.4 billion Paris and London Club loans in their custody. Justice Mojisola Olatoregun ordered the banks to temporarily forfeit the loans. Olatoregun made the order while granting an ex-parte application filed and argued before her court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) through its lawyer, Mr Ekene Iheanacho.

A landlord in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Paul Oparaugo, and five of his six children allegedly stabbed to death their tanant, Udochukwu Iwuoha, on Wednesday. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday clarified that what he approved for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation when President Muhammadu Buhari was away on medical vacation were financing loans and not contracts. The House of Representatives has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Minister of Labour and Employment to commence the process of negotiating an upward review of the current minimum wage. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the call was sequel to a unanimous adoption of a motion moved by Rep. Peter Akpatason (Edo-APC), during plenary on Thursday. Akpatason, in the motion, urged the Federal Government to hearken to calls for a review of the national minimum wage figure to avert the looming nationwide strike action threatened by workers.

An Igando Customary Court in Lagos on Thursday saved a 12-year-old marriage threatened by wife battering. The President of the Court, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, resolved the differences between Mr Wasiu Jimoh, 45, and his 40-year-old wife, Seun, after months of intervention. Omilola struck out a divorce suit by Seun, with an admonition that the couple should live in peace, love and harmony. “Since the court was able to reconcile you through counseling, I urge both of you to go home and live in peace and love,” he said.
